Morning guys, I was just thinking it would be nice to have an off-topic thread where we can chat about stuff not directly related to songbird, build the community a bit, chat about bands and all that seeing as people who are involved probably have a load of interesting stuff to say about music more generally. I know I've some of you guys on last.fm and stuff like that and I've picked up so many new bands from hanging around here which I think is awesome. It occurs to me that although it's fairly unlikely due to geographical barriers, but I'd totally get a round in for most of you guys out there, given a chance :)
Anyway, my tip for the day is Matisyahu. I'm a straight up indie kinda kid (que bland/boring etc labels) but I love a bit of funk and ska etc 'cause I play bass. This is like Reggae / Hip hop and it's kinda funky. Oh, and also, Maceo Parker who played sax with James Brown has done some awesome solo stuff. I'm learning everyday!

yeah, clearly! what a legend :) -
Inappropriate? Can someone make me an Ubuntu theme that goes well with YABS? Right now I have a modified Dust theme... i like it... but it could be better..
I’m random
-
Inappropriate? Can someone convince me to ditch XP for ubantu? hahaha :P
-
whats stopping you?
are you dual booting? or havent tried it? -
Nah, I'm running straight XP. I don't know if i'm hardcore enough to make the jump and I think I'd miss stuff like CoD4 etc...priorities! -
ahh.. if you're a pretty intense gamer then i understand..
but it doesnt hurt to try it out... allocate like 10 gb of space on your hard drive for ubuntu... and just fiddle with it.. its fun..
im still not hardcore enough to be a full fledged ubuntu.. sometimes i customize it too much and break stuff...
the best part is.. if you ever have a problem.. you just google it... and 110% of the time.. you will find someone with the same problem and an answer! -
check out all my bookmarks for ubuntu tips/help/problems... its kinda insane.. -
haha, don't know if i'd call myself intense, I get my ass kicked most of the time! But, I can certainly spare 10gb to play about and learn some cool stuff. Is there a step-by-step how-to for complete idots kicking around somewhere? :) -

Inappropriate?Hey Tim (or anyone else here) - Whats your favorite album, so far, released this year.
I’m lookin for music
-
Inappropriate?ah man, well don't know when they released anything, but I've spent the last two weeks solidly listening to The Cat Empire.
AMAZING.
They're Australian I think, they play proper funky kinda salsa style stuff. It's Mint.
If your Spotify is working you could check out
http://open.spotify.com/search/artist...
Otherwise try
http://www.last.fm/music/The+Cat+Empire
Recommend The car song, Hello, Days like these, The chariot.
Might have to go and do some thinking about this years releases!
I’m preaching the cat empire to anyone who will listen. Who wants to start a salsa band with me...?

woop woop, spread the word, Laura! -
Oh that is a funky song! Nice one. -
i just liked your use of "mint"! :-P -
hahahaha, well, fair enough! I'm massively overusing Mint and Epic at the moment.
But Richard agrees! yesssssssssss... You should check them out Laura :) Or give us some of your recommendations! ^^ -
I like Mint and Epic, don't stop. -
haha, I'm on it! -
I listened to them all during my Thermo class and it made it much more enjoyable... Cat Empire sounds like if you combined Tally Hall's funkiness, Rodrigo y Gabriela's acoustics, and Reel Big Fish's ska-ness all together... But they sound nothing like a single one of them together.. Very unique, love it! -
Inappropriate? You never disappoint on funky music Tim! Thanks for the rec! The only semi-funky stuff I could recommend is Dan Black's Un album.. It's kinda emo-ish(and he's not the best to look at), but definitely interesting music...
If you haven't listened to any of these this year, I would recommend checking them out.

Inappropriate?I aim to please man! I had a quick look at your list and considred myself in need of education - I shall spends some quality time with it later :)
I remeber picking up the first YYY ep called Master - seems like a long time ago now. Worth a listen, if just for the melodic bits of Arts Star... -
Inappropriate? If you're ever bored or depressed, head over to Ali's page and, uh, click it.. And if your still not satisfied.. click it again.. and again...

oh good heavens, my screen has never been so violated! -
you know you liked it. -
I...I think I'm in love... -
It's my most valuable contribution to the Songbird wiki to date. -
that still makes me smile. I wish i was the sort of person who read books. But I'm not. I'm the sort of person that giggles at unicorns. -
It's Ali's birthday tomorrow, I think we should all send her unicorn e-cards: her first name @songbirdnest.com :-D -
hahaha, awesome. It's already tomorrow here! How long for you guys? you're like 8 hours behind us right? -
holy cow, just noticed that lifehacker had almost the exact same icons as on my taskbar(in the exact same order)... Powerpoint, WinSCP, winrar(instead of 7zip),foobar, then the skype icon... wtf! were they using my computer?
sorry nerdy moment. -
ah, lh. I abbadoned the news in favour of geeky commentry many moons ago :)
foobar though?! :P -
Inappropriate?Firstly, thanks Michael for sharing this thread! Secondly I totally agree with Tim when he says the SBcommunity contributed to a greater variety in the music collection :-)
I think it's quite amusing to see how my own musical taste changes over time, nowadays tending to go towards something with resemblance of Indie. Not sure though.
Anyways, I want to share Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and especially their song Oregon Girl.
Btw, don't you have a Last.fm account Laura? I don't think I've seen you around.
Oh, and Michael does you Spotify account still work? -
O ya my tastes have changed so much too, but I never really lose/stop listening to what I love.. but just add more to my variety of music that i like/play...Up until sophomore year of high school, i only listened to classic rock (80s and earlier), then i discovered modern music, then discovered Vampire Weekend at a party, then realized how many good bands are out there that not that many people know of, then discovered how amazing female vocalists can be, then how much I like electronic music... and so on..(my wave graph is very interesting)
But ya, nowadays I can listen to just about anything you throw at me..
SSLYBY's Broom album is amazing!
And uhh, my spotify broke... i forgot about logging in for two weeks, now they just dont like me :( -
I actually did a wace graph myself yesterday, It's real perdy! -
I do, I just don't have any friends, like at all, and would be really embarrassed for you all to see what terrible girl music I listen to. That being said, I did just discover Oregon Girl while streaming a station I stole from Michael and LOVE it. :0) Oh, and I'm lauraksf but don't judge too harshly. -
Inappropriate?Wooop! Cool kids!!
-
dude I remember that song! I used it in a film I made for a photogrpahy project in my GCSEs...which means nothing to y'all but nvm :) good song! -
Inappropriate?Songbird is a fantastic product with an awesome community behind it.
I've invested a lot of time and interest in the project and always got positive response from both devTeam and people who use my feathers.
As a student I've got a laptop on loan from my school and use it every day. Obviously we're not allowed to have administrator rights or install software ourselves ( which kinda suck, but I respect non the less). Before v1.0 I was able to install Songbird without any super-admin powers and it was great, but right around the bend the devTeam introduced: "You need admin rights to install this program", and I thought: "well I'll still be able to install songbird on an other computer and copy/paste the program folder". And so I did and indeed it worked like a charm.
Tonight, I've downloaded the 1.5.0a-1264 build. Sure it works to do like before - installing and copy/paste but now I get a bonus error message of some kind.
(Songbird still works as expected but it definitely could be a lot smoother...)
Yes I know there is a portable version, but I, just as you want to play with the latest toys.
I guess my point is; why the heck did you implement user rights limitations? As I see things it's not your job to decide who can install Songbird but rather the Grumpy old tech support guy at my school. Am I correct, no?
It'll probably be impossible to install most applications like songbird on a computer with restricted user rights in the future anyway, but I consider this a matter of principle since songbird is open source.
Please make this sensible.
I’m kinda confused and a little bit frustrated, but love the bird nonetheless.
-
Hey Lenny, I honestly know nothing about this but I'll see if I can get someone who does to hop in. -
Inappropriate? With Michael Jackson's death and Kanye's "jackassery"... I wonder what Jimmy Page is gonna do for Songbird 1.5???

Personal favourite; Jonathan Koshi. -
