Problems Syncing flac files to cowon s9
I have a Cowon S9 and it supports .flac files but when i try to sync them it will only sync mp3s. Is there something i am doing wrong?

Inappropriate? It's probably either an issue that the device isn't reporting that it supports flac to Songbird, or the extension mapping we use is a bit off. the file does have the .flac extension?
I double checked and we do have the mapping for the files with the .flac extension. So it seems like it probably is that the device is not reporting the proper MTP content format back to us in the list of supported formats. And that causes us to skip those files.
The only thing I would know to do at this point is to make sure you have the latest firmware on the device. -
Inappropriate?I checked and i do have the most recent firmware. It does appear to not be reporting flac support. I am trying to get in contact with a cowon rep to see if there is a work around. Songbird is now my favorite music player though and thanks for the answer so quickly.
I’m confident that it will be resolved.

Inappropriate?Ok I tried to talk to the tech support for Cowon and they kept blaming the lack of .flac reporting on Songbird and not the S9.
I’m frustrated.

Inappropriate? Thanks for talking to them. I'm sorry I should have had you do one more thing. Songbird dumps out all the Playback Formats on the device info window. You can get to that either by right clicking on the device and clicking on Get Info. Or left click on the device and then clicking the "i" button next to the eject button.
The window contains the name of the device, serial number, Manufacturer, etc. At the bottom you should see a line called Playback Formats, it should look something like: audio/mpeg,audio/x-ms-wma,audio/x-wav,audio/audible ,audio/aac,video/x-msvideo,video/x-ms-wmv,video/x-ms-asf,image/x-raw,image/bmp
If you're not seeing something related to flac support in that list, then the device isn't reporting back that it supports it.
Another test would be to see if you can drag and drop a flac file from Windows Explorer (Assuming you're on Windows) to the device. Explorer (At least on Vista, not sure about XP) will display a message box saying the device doesn't support the file type and it can only be used for transport.
Thanks for taking time to help in tracking this down. -
Inappropriate? No i can definitely drag and drop files to the device. And on the window that has the device info it does not say that it supports .flac although it clearly does since i can transfer them and play them manually. Which leads me to believe that it is a problems with the players firmware.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate? You can drag and you get no prompt? What happens for me is that Explorer complains that the device doesn't support it, but it will go ahead and copy it to the device.
That window is pretty much a straight reflection of what the device says it is supporting . It should have "audio/x-flac" in there somewhere. We just map the Microsoft values to those mime type strings and to the various extensions. That said, we haven't tested any flac file with devices, as we didn't have any devices that supported flac. So I couldn't say with certainty that there's nothing wrong on our end. -
Inappropriate?ok nevermind whenever i try to drag and drop in mtp mode it gives me the error you are talking about. So it is definately the player and not the software.
I’m undecided

I realise this is a while ago but I had the same problem and found a solution that suggested that the S9 doesn't recognise the .FLAC extension and to change it to .FLA. I did this and it worked fine for me (windows still complains about the file format though).

Inappropriate?Yeah, and our awesome QA people just tried a device that, with updated firmware, supports flac and it worked fine. So it's got to be that the device just isn't reporting that it supports flac properly. Thanks again for taking the time to help figure this out.

Inappropriate? The ability to convert FLACs to MP3s (or even OGGs) when syncing is the one killer feature that would get me to switch to SongBird. I currently use WMP but am looking for a player that supports converting and syncing FLACs. Can't wait for the next update :)
I’m excited
