Questions about Songbird Portable and Sansa Clip/MTP
Questions about Songbird Portable and Sansa Clip:
I have a Sansa Clip portable with files synchronized from another machine. The files are podcasts downloaded from iTunes - no DRM. I use dynamic playlists in Windows Media Player (because Itunes is inadequate for synching with anything but ipods - yes I've tried ITA and all of the other stuff) to get fresh content and sync to my Clip.
I would like to play these songs from my player on another laptop. WMP won't sync dynamic playlists in MSC mode, so I use MTP. File players like Winamp won't play MTP mounted devices. So Songbird with its MTP support seems good.
So, questions I need help to answer:
1/ When I run Songbird Portable and connect my Clip, I see the device mounted fine and all playlists, etc. However, when I try to click a file and play it songbird tells me I can't play a song from the device, I must copy the files to the library.
2. When I try to do a sync, songbird tells me my library is empty and offers the choice of removing all the files on my Clip. I say no.
So...how can I use Songbird with MTP support to play those MP3s transferred to my Sansa Clip using Windows Media Player 11 on a machine which does not have a library>?

Inappropriate? Here is some additional information should someone have a solution.
I have SB Portable 1.2 + Vista SP1 + Sansa Clip 4g
It connects, reads, I can even delete files on the Clip.
If I try to copy files to the clip, SB goes through the motions, upper right shows files are copying. Files are never written to the CLIP
The Clip works fine with WinAmp and WMP
Any suggestions
I’m confused

I am not sure if your comment applies to my question - are you using the clip in MTP mode? I think most of the issue I am having is that I need to use the clip in MTP mode (I think) to use WMPs dynamic playlists, but I can't play songs directly from the clip in MTP mode. Are you using MSC or MTP? If you are using MTP, how did you get the songs to play in Winamp? -
Inappropriate?Supplemental information to my last post
I have tried the Clip in Automatic mode and MTP
SB will not "see" the Clip in MSC mode
I can write files to the Clip only if I use "Sync all playlists..."
SB replies with a message"... not enough room... do you want a random selection..."
SB then procedes to copy files that remain after I disconnect the CLIP.
I have found no other way to transfer files to the clip
I’m frustrated

I tried reformatting my clip and copying the same files in MSC mode. I have the same result as Furion - Songbird Portable does not "see" the clip in MSC mode. -
Inappropriate?MSC mode is supported correctly in Songbird 1.3 only (on Windows). Check this: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
You may alternatively use the FolderSync addon: http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/... if you don't want to install the 1.3 (which is pretty stable, except for MTP support that is broken... That is why 1.3 has not ben released and probably won"t never be, as 1.4 is on its way).
Hope this helps

MTP - still not working
MSC - does not work with Portable; does work with unreleased 1.3 version, which definitely does not work with MTP.
Is there a version of Songbird that can play files from an MTP device instead of just displaying them? -
Inappropriate?@Cal Enty
why don't you simply install Songbird 1.3 on your second computer, install the MSC add on, connect your device in MSC mode to the second computer, and say that you want to manage the device *manually*.
The main library there will remain empty, but though, you still will be able to play any song from the device's library in Songbird.
Of course, tracks on the device can be read directly only, not via playlists.
I’m confident

I would like to use my device in MTP mode, as I have to add songs to it using WIndows media player. Sounds like MTP mode in Songbird is still not quite usable for what I need. Thanks for your help. -
Inappropriate?Just for my knowledge, why do you have to use WMP and cannot use Songbird instead (in whatever mode)? Just being curious :)
Is it these dynamic playlists ? Do you know that "smart playlists" in songbird are similar?
As I said, just being curious
Thanks -
Inappropriate?I did a little learning on my own (!) and using the new full Songbird, I am able to sync files to my clip on the machine with the original music library. However, the files do not play when I attach the Clip to the other machine when the Clip is set to MTP mode.
Also, I am NOT able to sync files to the clip in MSC mode. Songbird does not see the Clip when I attach it to the original computer in MSC mode.
I would like to put files on the Clip using the computer with the original music library and play the files from the clip on another machine using Songbird. What combination of MSC/MTP and version do I need to accomplish this?
Also - this is the THIRD site I have had to sign up with for getting help with Songbird. I know it's free, but a little centralization might help!

Inappropriate?Always good to learn by oneself :) !
What were the 2 other sites you had to sign up? I only know this one, which is the official Songbird support site. http://getsongbird.com/help/ happens to take you here as well.
About your last test: which version of Songbird did you install on each machine? With which extensions (MTP or MSC) in which versions?
What mode have you set on the Clip? The Auto mode has never worked for me, and I have to set it either to MSC or MTP explicitely..
And again: why do you need MTP mode? I don't know this mode (seems too Microsoft-proprietary to me ;)) so I'm curious to learn...
And are you still using WMP? If yes, why?
That makes a bunch of questions, but needed to help you.
