Ratings are not saved to the files?
I recently rated most of my songs in 0.7rc2, then upgraded to the next Version. I deleted my old profil, because i got some problems.
After importing my songs again, all the ratings are gone! :-(
Shouldn't they be saved to files? I thought meta-data is written to the files since 0.7!
Or am I missing something?

If you go to "about:config" and set the boolean preference:
songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting
to be true, it will write metadata ratings back to the file.
You can read more about why we disabled it here:

Inappropriate?PS: Other changes, like some edits in album-title and song-name were saved correctly and are not lost like the ratings.
-
I did this in about:config and it isn't writing; the ratings don;t show in any id3 editor or WMP, and when I remove and re-add media (to update library), I lose all ratings -
Inappropriate? It was decided in a high-level meeting to not write ratings to files. I do not remember what the exact reasoning was...
-
Inappropriate?Well, why didn't you make this public, then? That would have saved me the time for rating it... I was so happy when write support for meta-tags was announced. I thought this would bring my tags to the safe side. :-(
I’m sad

Inappropriate? Please wait for someone else from within the company who knows more about this specific area of the product to post here so they can enlighten you.

Inappropriate?Via email from our Product Manager:
"we decided against storing user specific data in the file.
while it's nice for the scenarios below, if someone chooses to share files either with other users on their machine or by literally sharing files - this data is in them and it would cause hiccups.
one day, we hope to solve this by either working with, enabling, or creating a webservice that allows users to backup/sync their metadata - specifically their user generated content such as playcount/ratings/etc."
----
I hope this helps you understand the current situation.

Inappropriate?Thanks for the answers!
So saving the ratings works with this about:config editing? That's good news, I give it a try.
And well, I can understand your point of view, but I have a different opinion: The tags are embedded to provide more informations. I would LOVE to be able to see, which song the people who gave me songs like :-) I think that would be a feature, not a down-cut. Reset the ratings is just a Ctrl+a and the Tag-Editor away...
Not saving ratings make it harder to change the media-player or you different players at the same time, too.
You could let the user decide, by adding an option or making a poll.
P.S.: The idea from your Product Manger about backing up / sync my personal data and listening profile to a webservice doesn't look kosher to me... But perhaps I'm just not Web 2.0 compatible.
-
I totally agree with you Marcus. The user should be able to decide. -
I totally agree with Marcus on this one. The user should be able to decide. -
Inappropriate?I changed the about:config, and it works! Thanks!
I just got the idea, that someone could make an extension to make an option for that available through "Settings". That would be much more comfortable. It should be really easy, sadly I don't now how to do that :-/
Anyone else who does?
-
Inappropriate? It would actually be quite easy - you could copy 90% of what my "Web Media History Preference" add-on does...
I’m always trying to get people to become developers
-
Inappropriate?I will try to create that Add-on. My feathers are close to done, so I'm seeking for a new challenge, an easy to develop Add-on. This is it :-)
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Aaargh.
I just finished my extension, and it works great, but other than Marcus said, the about:config value doesn't work (in 07.rc3)! (I didn't doublechecked this before i began with the extension)
Even if songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting is set to true, ratings are not saved to files, and/or not imported when adding files to library.
(I checked the files i rated with Mp3tag.)
So my extension is worthless... :-/
Can you please check out, why the about:config value isn't working?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Yup, you are right. Do you have a bugzilla account so you can file that as a bug? If so, make sure you note OS, SB version, and steps to reproduce. Try to keep the bug context to the issue of the about:config pref and not your extension.

What is happening with this bug now????? -
Inappropriate?Woah... Something's weird here.
My music's on a thumb drive. I played and rated at work (about:config set to write ratings to file). In Windows Explorer, rating a track in SongBird did not affect the rating shown by Windows Explorer. I assumed nothing was being written.
When I got home, I put the thumb drive in my home computer. Tracks still appeared unrated in Windows Explorer (expected). However, SongBird showed ratings (not expected). I opened the files in ID3-TagIt. No rating data was stored in either the ID3 1.1 or 2.3 fields.
Where is SongBird writing the rating data? To some proprietary meta data fields? Not good.
I’m nervous- what other non-standard stuff is going on?
-
It looks like the ratings are being stored as comments in ID3 v2.4 tags...
I really want ratings that work across players. -
Inappropriate?Another vote to fix this bug! In my opinion it's a great feature. As I (and I guess most users) got 90% mp3-files, it would be great to use the feature with this kind of files.
-
Inappropriate?Vote for a fix, too.
It's sad, that stevels answer isn't working for mp3s. 95% of my songs are in mp3.
-
Inappropriate?Media Monkey seems to write ratings to file properly.
I prefer SongBird, but, for me, this is a must.

Inappropriate?Have there been any new developments in this area?
I listen to my iPod all the time and always rate music and like to also have record of every time I listen as well...
Are there any plans to have Songbird actually get that user data back from the iPod and integrate it back into the Songbird database??
This is a HUGE thing for me. In fact, once this is possible, I will switch to Songbird full-time.
Thanks! :) -
Inappropriate?I should also add that I don't care if the data is actually saved to the files. I just want the personal data from my iPod (which syncs to Songbird) to sync BACK into Songbird. I want the data that I played XYZ Song at this date/time and gave it 4 stars to transfer back into my Songbird library. :)
If it does that, I'm sold and BYE-BYE iTunes. :D -
Inappropriate?Sorry....It isn't totally off-topic, but I replied to the wrong post. Sorry.
-
Inappropriate?I can't save my ratings right now.
When I rename one folder I lost my information.
It's a great problem beacuse I have again empty MP3's.
SongBird is a great program but if doesn't have this feature I can't work with it. -

Inappropriate?I'm a Mediamonkey user and have been for ages. I think it's crap when it comes to a)looks b)implementing addons c)addons. But the tag editor in Mediamonkey is bar none THE best implementation I have ever seen.
I have posted several of my "nagging complaints" on the MM forum. Either MM fixes the old-school look and implementation of add-ons or SB fixes this "inherent design flaw cooked up by engineers rather than users" tag/rating bollocks...... ;) Whoever does this first wins basically. -
Inappropriate?I still believe that Songbird should use Extended attributes to store ratings, not ID3 tags. It works the same overall, doesn't modify files directly, safer, can be transported, compatible with Windows OSX and Linux, behaves better in mixed environments, and doesn't mess up bittorrent:
http://www.getsatisfaction.com/songbi...
I doubt that many Portable media players support ratings in ID3 tags anyway.

Inappropriate? What if there was an adon to import ratings from ID2/3 tags and then store them in the current format? All we really want is to keep our ratings, don't think we really care how they are stored? Or do we?
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?G'day,
Actually, it appears there is an addon now available to export and import file ratings known as RatingFile. However, I've personally never tested it.
Hopefully this helps :D -
A file that only songbird can read, thats useful. Btw switching a small setting in the about:config section saves the ratings to the id3 of the song.... not sure why this is still going. -
Inappropriate?Just suggested it primarily for those who need a way to migrate their library, but I agree that in this case it might not be that helpful...
