SB 1.0 really slows down XP sometimes
I am really happy with the 1.0-release it's nice and fast but sometimes something happens and SB slows down my whole system (XP SP3) so I can barerly move the mouse over the screen anymore or do anything else.
I could not open the task-manager while this happened so I don't know if it is a CPU-overload or something.
The only thing that works is going to the taskbar (the mouse reacting really slowly), rightclicking on SB and closing it. Then the system is back to normal and after restart SB it works fine again.

I have this problem, too!

Inappropriate? Is there any pattern as to when you've seen this slow down. I'm thinking does it occur after Songbird has been playing music for a while and then you go to use it. Or is it just completely random?
Also is this period of slowing XP is there an end? Does it eventually speed back up if you wait long enough? -
Inappropriate? Thanks for the answer. No, I can't see any pattern in when the problem occurs. Sometimes I can listen without problems for a day and then it happens again. Until this morning I thought it always rather happend when one song ended and the next began but today it happend half way through.
Wow, it happened again just now, while I wrote this. I opened the taskmanager and waited about 15 minutes. Seems to be a CPU-overload after all, CPU stayed at 100% with two short going downs to 0% and up again. After 15 minutes the system crashed completly.
I'll try uninstalling some plugins, to see if it's one of them.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Hi jlow,
I have the same problem - have you found out if any plugins have caused this? I get this problem too and thus I'm waiting to see if any updates come out before using songbird again as it's super annoying. I was wondering if it may have had to do with AAC protected vs. unprotected files.
Any sort of crash report built into songbird for this?
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Check your plugins and if you're not formatted your computer in more than 3 months you should do it (sorry, but windows is buggy as hell)
-
Inappropriate?I don't mind checking my plugins but reformatting my computer to get a single application to work is too much for me. I reformatted about six months back, anyway.
-
You shouldn't have to reinstall the OS unless you're running Mac OS. (Sorry couldn't resist). One thing that sometimes helps is defragging. But from one of your symptoms, high CPU usage, I don't think that's the problem here.
I'd be really interested to see if removing add-ons helps. It's quite possible that an add-on is creating a lot of garbage and that might be responsible for the intermittent delays you're seeing. -
Inappropriate?Ok, so, how about starting songbird in safe mode? If it works fine that way then the plugins must be the issue.
-
Using safe mode seems to have made it stop happening - been playing all day now with no problems. I'll try to isolate which plugin next I suppose...I'm using fairly standard ones (I believe)... -
Inappropriate?Let us know wich plugin is the responsible.
Greetings. -
Inappropriate?I think it may be Last.fm music recommendations, though I can't say for sure as it's so intermittent. Disabling it thus far seems to be keeping everything stable...
-
Inappropriate?I don't use last.fm music recommendations, and it happens to me.
-
Inappropriate?I uninstalled all plugins that I don't really need (mashtape etc.) and it worked fine for some weeks after that. For some reason the problem is back with double intensity now. As said above, it's really annoying.
Yeah, windows is buggy, I've been especially warned to use SP 3 but some progs needed it and so far everything worked fine. Don't now if it's SP 3 causing this problem of course.
I now would test if it works when disabling more plugins. How do I start SB in safe mode? (Okay, stupid me, found it but the problem still is:) It's always really hard to get fundamental help for songbird explaining these basic topis.
Is there some documentation or helpfile somewhere where these things are listed? This kinda-forum is realy great for problems and feedback but for the basics it sucks. I'd like a list of all the shortcuts too. Just found out this morning that pressing Strg+n in the Metadata-Editor jumps two(?) tracks forward.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Maybe we can compare notes - if we're both using a plugin, we can narrow it down to those ones. Right now I'm using:
ACM MP3 Decoder 0.1
Dom Inspector 2.0.0
Last.Fm 0.3.3.882
MediaFlow 2.9 (This was just updated a few min ago though)
QuickTime Playback 1.0.0.860
Windows Media Playback 1.0.0.860
Though some of these are probably needed to actually run Songbird but perhaps it's a start. -
Inappropriate?I disabled ACM MP3 decoder...and who knows? Maybe it's helping - it's so erratic it's hard to tell. On the other hand, I now have media core component playback errors...but at least they'll just advance to the next song. Will keep posted...
-
Inappropriate?ACM update - I think I'll be trying this - http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
Release note says "Fixes a major memory leak when playing any MP3 file"(!) Which is certainly possibly what I had... -
Inappropriate? It was not the ACM-thing in my case, I installed the updates that songbird found yesterday (running ACM-version 0.2 now) enabled all my other plugins too and the problem is back on. Turned every plugin off again exept for
Focus Track 1.0.4.
Ipod Support 3.0.10.860
and Last.fm 0.3.3.882 now.
I'll see if it's one of those.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?problem still proceeds, after running only the acm-decoder and ipod plugin, i am now testing it without any plugins, see how that works. safe-mode worked fine, so it would be really surprising for me if it would crash now without plugins. what would that mean?
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?I've been having the same problem on Vista, too! It just freezes my computer and consumes nearly 100% of CPU. I'm not computer savvy, so I don't know how to find nor report a bug. Is there any add-on which can collect/generate a crash report?
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?getting a little pissed now, tested it without any plugins and only with the acm-decoder-plugin and the problem is still appearing randomly at any configuration but almost daily now.
the only difference between no plugin and the acm-decoder is that with the decoder activated sb sometimes don't even start playing anything after starting it.
again my question is: what is the difference between safe-mode and normal mode (with no plugins)? because safe-mode always worked fine for me.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?BAM! sb is crashing in safe-mode too, now. thinking about switching to another player, sb has the nasty habit of messing up my playlists too (and can't export them and can't burn cd's) and i don't know how long my enthusiasm for this sweet open-source thing will last anymore.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Upgrade to 1.1 and everything will be fine : D
