Scan for media hangs on certain files
On Linux, when I scan for media in my music folder, Songbird will hang on some of the albums (or songs in the albums, the dialog doesn't detail this). They're always the same albums, and there is no way to skip them. One workaround is to cancel the scan, move the album somewhere else, and start the scan again, but so far I've had to move 9 albums and it still hangs. Is this a known bug or am I doing something wrong?

Marrit and SEA, thanks for the follow up. I've filed a bug for this, we'll check into it.

Inappropriate?Marrit, Can you give us more detail about the albums in question. What format are they?
-
Inappropriate? All of the albums are in MP3 format, and the files seem to play fine in Amarok. I'm not sure how to find out how they have been encoded; is there a program available for Ubuntu to do so?
There are no weird characters in the filenames either, nothing beyond hyphens and brackets.
I’m thinking
-
Inappropriate?Sounds like you've found a bug with the media scan. I'm not an Ubuntu user so I'm not sure if there's a way to find how the tracks were encoded. Can you try clearing your 0.6 profile (rm -rf ~/.songbird2) and trying again from scratch. If you continue to experience problems I'll go ahead and file a bug.
-
Inappropriate?Actually, now I tried to wait longer. And after some time it passed problem files and finished scan ok. I've noticed that this happened on files with cyrillic filenames.
-
Inappropriate?I've cleared my profile and still encounter the same problem, on the same albums. I'll wait to see if the albums clear after an extended period of time, but I'm not very hopeful. Earlier today I tried waiting for the albums to process, but after 5 minutes I gave up - every other album clears in less than a second. Even if they do somehow get processed after more than 5 minutes, this is still a rather significant problem.
Other information that may be useful:
-Songbird does not lock up. The bar that indicates process is still moving, the files just don't seem to be processed.
-I've noticed that it hangs on several albums by the same artist (all 4 albums by Porcupine Tree, at least 5 albums by Nine Inch Nails). I'm not entirely sure, but I think I may have downloaded these albums in a discography, which probably means they have been encoded in the same way. This could indicate a problem with a certain encoder.
I hope this helps somehow.
[edit] One album seems to have been processed correctly after 14 minutes. That is to say, Songbird is now busy reading metadata.

Inappropriate?Alright. Thank you very much for your assistance, Koshi, and the best of luck with continuing to improve Songbird.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Sounds almost like what happened when i did a scan for media. It appeared to lock up after some time on the same folder, however i then figured out that it was simply processing all the meta data and scan results and the text was just showing the last folder it could find (consistent). I don't think it's the same problem that Marrit is explaining, but might be what SEA came across. Perhaps a change in text saying the "found music is being processed" to show people that the program has not locked up. As opposed to sitting on the one folder and appearing to be doing nothing.
I’m thankful

Exodus, the UI is designed to show feedback that it's scanning. This could be a bug. I know that I've experience issues when scanning new directories after the initial scan. When starting from scratch it seems to work as designed. I'll add your comments to our bug for good measure. -
Inappropriate?yes, I found out that the folder on which it stuck for me is the last subfolder in scanning folder.
I’m undecided
-
Did the scan finally complete or did it hang on the last folder? Did you try clearing your profile and starting over from scratch? -
this happened to my twice. First time I didn't wait for the end, and gave up. Then I reinstalled Songbird, cleared the profile, and repeated once again. On the folder It "hangs" it seems scan continues, as I could see blinking hdd led, only nothing is displayed. It finished ok. -
SEA, thanks again for following up. I've added your additional comments to the bug. -

Inappropriate?I just spoke to QA and we'll be addressing this issue in the next release. Basically we're not pushing status back to the UI letting you know that Songbird is actually working to insert data into the database.
