Search: Metadata vs. Lyrics
I think it's awesome that songbird allows you to really easily find, save and view lyrics for all your music. Brilliant, great job chaps. It's also incredibly handy that the library search feature allows you to search through lyrics because we all know how irritating it is when you've got half a chorus stuck in your head and you can't remember what the darn song is called.
Anyhoo, a new problem arises from this - now when I search for a song or album title I get a couple of hundred hits instead of the 20 or so that I wanted. Therefore what I propose is a little search preferences dialogue box (or part of the drop down search engine list?) or something similar allowing you to choose from the following options when searching your library:
- Search just metadata eg track title, album, artists etc etc
- Search just lyrics
- Search both lyrics and metadeta
Would this be easily implementable? I don't know very much about these things. What do you all think? I've got nearly 18,000 tracks in my library and I think it would be really useful to pin down the song you wanted.
I'm really sorry if somebody has already suggested this but if so, well done because I think it's a great idea... :)
Tim
ps - thank you beautiful people for songbird. It's awesome :)

Inappropriate?Hey Tim,
That's a great idea that I couldn't find logged in Bugzilla yet. If you'd like to see it, get some folks to rally behind you here, and we'll add it to our to do list; or feel free to log it here to tell the developers what you want directly. Oh the power!
To check out other up and coming ideas head to our Idea Kitchen and vote for your favorites.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Um I tried to create a bugzilla account so I could log this but I've not recieved the e-mail which enables you to sign up despite trying several times. Any pointers?

Hmmm, I'm sure you already checked your spam filter...
Maybe try heading here for help: http://www.bugzilla.org/support/ -

Inappropriate?Ok, finally managed this (with another e-mail address...) and logged it as bug 16010:

Awesome, thanks for soldiering on! -
Inappropriate?I like the idea, but I would also like a bit more power... how about incorporating a syntactical equivalent of the smart playlist system into the search bar?
Yes, they would compete, but I believe they would be used for largely different purposes, searching for a temporary and quick result , and smart playlists for more complex matching, and permanent lists
Evaluating pseudo expression such as below would be really nice, and the above feature could easily be incorporated ^^
' Play count at least 60 AND Artist is The Beatles '
or simpler
'Song name is "all 4 one"'
maybe with syntax
'''play count(at least, 60) AND artist(is, "The Beatles")'''
would make people who have large librarys lives' much easier. It is practically a bug that searching "all 4 one" results in 100 songs from my library... whereas there is only ONE song named "all 4 one"
Anyway, I'm not sure if my views align with those of the general userbase, admittedly these seems more geared towards people who have some programming or mathematical skills. -
Inappropriate?lulz I have very little of either. I'm just a keen user with some ideas which I hope other people can figure out a way to implement :)
I like what you're saying. My solution for that problem is to keep one smart play list called 'Today's list' which I use for smart searching and a change all the time, rather than constantly creating new playlists (I have enough of them anyway!)
So for instance my 'Today's list' currently provides indie records that are less than 10 years old which I've added in the last month - but yesterday it was ska tracks with a rating above 3 and play count below 10.
