Slow library search
This isn't really a problem, but there is no delay at all from when you start typing in the search box and the player starts searching for artists in my collection. If you added like 0.25 seconds delay I wouldn't have the problem with the player searching on "Col", "Cold", "Coldp" before it searches for "Coldplay". It makes the searching very slow compared to that in iTunes.

Inappropriate? This is one big problem especially noticeble in large libraries.
The issue is well known and should be fixed in this release.

Inappropriate?Same problem here, takes seconds to search every character, the problem becomes very obvious when Songbird is compared to other programs.
-
Inappropriate?I hate having to admit this, but I've switched back to iTunes :/ I don't understand why it's taking so long to fix this problem, gosh, it's not rocket science.
I’m dissappointed
-
Inappropriate?I've got the same problem. A small delay in returning the search results would solve the problem for me as well.
-
Inappropriate?Followup: I've tried the 20081011 nightly build. Search has improved a lot, but it still hangs now and then.
On the other hand, updating my library (re-importing) has become lighting fast so I'm hoping searching will be as well some day :) -
Inappropriate?Indeed, I tried it with the 20081012build and it became much faster, still somewhat slow with sorting after each character, couldn't it be set to search only after enter is pushed. I think that would feel faster
Thanks a lot, looking forward to the next stable release,
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Hello, I've downloaded the latest version and I have a slow search problem... My library is over 60 GB in size just so you know...
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem.
how is the status of this bug?
if i use the itunes library in songbird it works really faster.
i like the idea of songbird and its wonderful that it's open source. but this delay is a fatal cause to swich back to itunes.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Using the 1.0 and 1.1b1&b2 clients on a Mac (2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.5.6) I'm seeing huge hangs when searching my library (30,000 or so songs). It's pretty inconsistant, sometimes a library search will only take a couple seconds and other times it will hang for 30 - 90 seconds and completely lock up the program. I can't seem to find a pattern for when it will take a long time, but it's becoming a headache trying to use this program on a daily basis.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@Logan +1 with 1.20a a littler faster...
-
Inappropriate?I also got this slow search bug. It takes too long in my opinion
-
Inappropriate?Using 1.1.1, Build 1018 and having a 100gb library my searches are taking minutes (upto 5!!!). This is a showstopper.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I have this problem on my mac with 1.1.1 as well
I have a pretty big library, 15,000 songs, but Ive seen much larger libraries work faster
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?SB 1.1 freezes totally when Is each my library of 28k items.
@Rymdkakor: nice nick :) old Super Play-times <3
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Erikw: Thanks ^^ They have a nice name them boys :P I'm Rymdkakor on Loading.se aswell, and I used that nick back when superplay.se was the shit, which it certainly isn't nowadays ;D
I’m amused
-
Inappropriate?OT
:D Some days ago I actually thought of that time. Do you remember kaktusligan & Kimmoa :P
I’m amused
-
Yeah haha, I still have the papers somewhere from when I reported Kimmoa's ass to the police for harrassing my email xD -
Inappropriate?Same problem for me... searches taking around 10 minutes.
I first thought that Songbird crashes, but yesterday I went eating with songbird "crashed" and 10-12 Minutes later suddenly Music started to play...
I mean even Winamp or WMP are able to manage searches on my library.
And I atm have only about a quarter of my songs in my Songbird library (around 130GiB).
I’m angry
-
Inappropriate?you can fix this temporarily by typing your search in something other then songbird and copy/paste it into the songbird search bar. I hope that the new release will be there really soon because it is annoying! :)
I’m going mad
-
Inappropriate?Still not fixed. A media player is only as good as it's ability to search and play your media without locking up or crashing at the 'search' part. Songbird is a joke if you have a moderately sized collection.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This issue should be fixed ASAP ... Sometimes my 40K library is freezing for 10 minutes if I search for an artist, sometimes it does its job within seconds.. It's really irritating. Is there a bug to vote for in bugzilla?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? After reinstall Windows (Vista) I haven't longer any Problems with the search (same Songbird Version, same Database, I copied the Songbird Profile folder and use it without any changes). It seems to be a problem with another application or library?
-
Inappropriate?hmm... I don't know.. it seems to me, that it depends on the artist you search for... search is very fast for 311, but needs minutes for ZZ Top...
-
Inappropriate?@all

Inappropriate?thx Michael, but why is such an important issue not considered in jackson 5. In the bug it says that it will be considered in Kanye. Thats a long time...
-
Well, because its a really important issue :-P and it requires a lot of development and testing (testing that could the push back the Jackson5 release date).. It is reworking a lot of the Songbird's innards as you can see by the size of the patches (a lot of performance work), so the devs want to get it just right..
p.s. I've been watching you (in the non-creepy way) on Get Satisfaction, thanks for all your help Lito, keep it up ;-) -
Ok, that makes sense ;) I'll grab the nightlies as soon as this was fixed.
Well giving back something to the community is the least I can do for such a great app! -
Inappropriate? This is a problem with SQLite! Amarok has the same problem when it uses SQLite. If have a large collection i recommend using Amarok+MySQL , its the only software i have found that can handle my collection (~30,000 files).
Peace
I’m happy to help!

Inappropriate?I think what you are talking about seems to be an open source habit if you get what I mean. The open source movement really got started with linux and server geeks. People that often had to deal with large data bases. I think it just has to do with the preference of the software designer. I prefer having the program search as I type because it saves me from having to type "soon it will be cold enough to build a fire" and I can just type "soon i" and click once to start the song. I prefer it because I get the feed back on my search in real time so I know when it does not need to be refighned any more.
I would rather see an option in a menu some where that will let the user switch between the instant search method and one that requires you press enter and the end of your query. -

Inappropriate?I have been using songbird for a long time now.
But my music library has increased to 12000 songs
And the search feature is giving me a lot of trouble.
The searches are slow and wheni try to make a new search the software stops responding and i have to start it again.
So i m forced to switch to itunes and mediamonkey.
Please do something about it.

The search feature is giving a lot of trouble..
I’m sad
-
It's not surprising -
same reason why I stopt using songbird -
Inappropriate?same here, XP32 4.000 songs - it takes 30 sec. (nightly buil from today)
vista64, 25.000 songs - minutes, no response...(1.2)
how to quick fix: make an option to disable searchOnKeypressed
i already reinstalled winamp.... sucks...
so when can we use it again?
I’m confused. why can this be a problem...
-
"This isn't really a problem," by Rymdkakor - i would say its a main feature that does not work:
1. play a song
2. play list of songs
3. filter list of songs
praying (as an atheist) to the songbirdGod... -
Inappropriate?philler you must have like 50 songs in your entire library. This is a very serious problem that prevents people from using Songbird in favor of faster clients.
-
thats the point, i cant recommend songbird bcause people wouldnt be satisfied - bcause of this single issue -
Inappropriate?Got the same problem here, got around 30k songs on a smb drive and client always locks up when I start typing.
Any idea what type of database is behind the music library? is there a exists check while searching ?
I just got the latest version of Songbird via daily builds
( deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/songbird-dai... jaunty main )
Version: Songbird 1.4.0a, Build 1205 (20090728220037)

Inappropriate?in 5 of 10 times, songbird nearly completely locks up when i search my library. often i have to force-shutdown it. moved my library from an external firewire 400 to an external firewire 800 (!) drive, and the problem only slightly improved.
this makes songbird basically useless.
it is obviously a problem of the library size, cause when i import only e.g. 1/4 of my music, songbird is alot faster.
please please plase get this fixed
version: Songbird 1.3.1, Build 1218 (20090804030239)
system: Mac OS X 10.5.7
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I think that they are short on developers or something...
I hope that Winamp will be available for OSX one day.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Tip for present users: When searching.
1. Type one letter of the search.
2. Observe the count of items in the lower right of the screen, wait for it to change to a lower number.
3. Repeat
This also gives you an indication of how slow the search is and reduces frustration.
-
Inappropriate?I am having the same issue as most of the above people, about 10K songs, Songbird will hang for anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes when using the search. Windows Vista 64 Premium (Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz - 4GB RAM)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?@ltkermit
With that kind of hardware @ 10k songs... It seems like something might be wrong with your Songbird installation.
Or it might be hinting toward it being a 64bit problem.(Or other hardware specific) Try wiping your profile(or creating a new one), uninstall Songbird, then download 1.2 again from the website.
The only time my search got that slow was when I install non-final release builds (might be worth other people here to try it in a new (non beta) installation & profile). (And/Or compare hardware)
I’m curious
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?Hey Michael, thanks for the tip! I have actually already tried doing that and it didn't seem to help. The problem I described above is actually on my wife's computer. On mine (exact same specs) I do not have the issue, but I only have about 1500 songs in my library. Any other ideas?
I’m thankful
-
Hmm, what if you created a new profile on your wife's computer, and see how it compares at 1500 songs.. If it's noticeably different at that amount then we might be able to conclude that its a hardware or installation/profile problem. If its the same performance(good) as your computer, try adding tracks (maybe 1000 at a time).. And see if you can see some sort of threshold pop up were it starts getting bad.
I have a laptop that is nowhere near those hardware specs and Songbird (with 18k+ tracks) searches like a champ on it.. -
Ah, of course! Great plan! I will give that a try and let you know the results. Thanks! -
Ok, here is what I did. I completely removed Songbird, uninstalled it and deleted the profile. I then downloaded 1.2.0 from getsongbird.com, I used all of the defaults to install and did not add any extra add-ons. I added my wife's directory to the library (10,990) the search seemed faster, just a bit laggy until I started a song, then the search started to lag just like before. I then removed the profile completely and restarted Songbird, this time I added my directory to the library (1620). With my library the search did not lag at all, with or without a song playing. I did the same procedure on both computers with the same result, I have no idea what is going on :) -
Inappropriate? In the 1.2 release I still have this problem with large databases... but only in windows. In Linux (ubuntu) I never had this problem.
I hope that for 1.4 this bug is fix for windows users :D
I’m unsure
-
I have the problem in Windows and OSX... never tryd it on ubuntu... -
Inappropriate?I recently installed the latest nightly, which greatly improved the overall search performance but already found a new bug...
If I search for an artist name that contains spaces songbird freezes, if I paste the name in the box everything is ok...
Platform is WinXP 32bit.
Can anyone confirm this?
Edit: sry forgot my songbird version: Songbird 1.4.0b3, Build 1303 (20091007151242)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Nothing has worked for me. I don't get it, I can type DMX in the songbird search box, and everything works fine. But if I type a different artist it will freeze up. Songbird is the only software that makes my computer freeze since I left windows! it's also the only program in ubuntu that I know of that has everything I'm looking for in a music program. I really don't know what to do!
I’m frustrated, sad, and I hope there's a fix for this quick!
-
Inappropriate?@Gilberto Thats odd.
Actually, the only OS where Songbird worked out really fine, was in Ubuntu.
Are you trying a nightly? or a beta or songbird?
The actual release works out fine.. and in the new release, I think they worked that through
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?I had the same problem using Vista. Now, with the same notebook but Win7 64Bit on it the search is fast! :)
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?hello.
songird freeze on even search when i play a song and eat up all my cpu power (100%). :(
if i select the library pane BEFORE i perform the search, it works fine.
my library has about 20237 entries.
i tried songbird with a smaler library (e.g. 1200 entries) and this effect will not be happen.
my machine runs with a windows xp/sp3.
tested with all available versions of songbird (1.1.2 / beta 1 and 2 / nightly builds)
is there any workaround to fix this?
