Some songs will not play, a gstreamer error pops up
When I click certain songs, songbird gives me the error message "Songbird has encountered the following media core error: Gstreamer has encountered a general stream error." It gives the option to click a box that says "Do not show further media core errors". The songs that it will not play are .m4a files (which I have no problem playing in itunes or media player, so the files themselves are fine).

Inappropriate?Hi mattargyle,
So that I can assist you, please let me know:
1) what version of Songbird you are using;
2) what operating system you are using; and
3) if this happens with all .m4a files, or just some of them.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?I'm using version 1.0.0, build 860 with Windows XP. This happens with all m4a files, and has not yet happened with any other file type. Thanks for replying so quickly!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I have the same issue. Also 1.0.0, build 860, Windows XP Home SP3.
Also mpeg-4 files. Sucks!
I’m gonna hold my breath patiently.
-
Inappropriate?I also have the same issue, also with 1.0.0 and with windows XP Professional and all .M4a files
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?I had this problem. it was because i didnt have quicktime installed. so i grabbed the quicktime alternative and that fixed my problem for good. so give that a try
-
I installed the quicktime Add-on, and it still gives me the same error message. -
And I just reinstalled quicktime and the fairplay add-on, and I still get the same error message. -
I too have installed the QuickTime Playback and the Windows Media Playback add-ons, but I get the same m4a errors.
Glad it worked for you though, xbrianx. -
You need to install Quicktime or the Quicktime alternative. Installing the Quicktime add-on only is not enough. -
My wording there was poor. I installed Quicktime, and I installed the quicktime add-on. I'm still getting the problem. -
Inappropriate? This happens to me with random mp3's (and possibly ogg's) it appears to happen with totally random songs in my library.
I'm running 32-bit Linux (Ubuntu)
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I had an old version of quicktime because I never use that. I uninstall that and install the new version and everything works ok with m4a.
I’m happy
-
I reinstalled the latest quicktime yesterday, it still doesn't work for me. -
Inappropriate?I'm using 1.0.0 (Build 860) on Ubuntu 8.10 x64, and I'm getting this problem too. So far, all of my FLACs and MP3s seem to work.
Also, M4As will play just fine using Rhythmbox. I'm pretty sure that Rhythmbox uses gstreamer to play files, too. -
I forgot to mention that they played using songbird 0.7 just fine. As far as I know, on Linux, that version used Gstreamer, too. -
Inappropriate? How come i did not need quicktime for songbird 0.7 to play m4a songs, i only needed the quicktime add-on and now with 1.0 i need quicktime?
-
I think this gstreamer is new for the 1.0 release, and was not used on the .7 release -
Inappropriate? Can't Play music - big problem and has only happened since upgraded.
I’m Disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Installed Quicktime and quicktime addon restarted songbird and problem was solved. Thanks for your help.
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Do you have to install also Quicktime?
-
Inappropriate?I have uninstalled songbird because after following all of this advice (installing the quicktime add-on, reinstalling quicktime, filing a bug report, following all other similiar bug reports), the problem has not been fixed. A media player that doesn't play all of my media is useless.
I’m extremely disappointed
-
Inappropriate?I have the same issue. Also 1.0.0, build 860, Mac OSX 10.5.6.
Also mpeg-4 files.
I’m sad, this has been an issue since post 6.0.1!

Inappropriate?Linux Ubuntu intrepid x86
It works in rhythmbox
gstreamer-0.10 is installed... I think songbird wants gstreamer-0.8, but I do not have these in my repository.
When I open the error console, I see two items pop up for every song that fails:
Warning: GStreamer warning: No decoder available for type 'audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)4, framed=(boolean)true, codec_data=(buffer)1210, rate=(int)44100, channels=(int)2'. Additional information: gsturidecodebin.c(586): unknown_type_cb (): /player/uridecodebin3
and
Error: GStreamer error: GStreamer encountered a general stream error. Additional information: qtdemux.c(2007): gst_qtdemux_loop (): /player/uridecodebin3/decodebin23/qtdemux3:
streaming stopped, reason not-linked
I guess songbird is linked against gstreamer-0.8.
I migrated from itunes, so 90% of my 140 Gb library is aac, they all fail! Only a minority (10 or so) are with drm, I know I will never be able to play them in songbird on linux ... so I wait patiently for itunes plus versions ... but can I not build and link songbird against gstreamer-.0.10 ?
I’m sad

Inappropriate?i have the same issue, i upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 and installed gstreamer 0.10 now songbird is not playing anything

Inappropriate?@All Windows users.
to play m4a files you need to have QuickTime or QTLite installled in your OS.
BTW, more informative error message instead of that generic "Gstreamer error" should be fixed
http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
and working in the latest nightly builds.
@Linux users (thecarpy and Laura)
We have a few different problems playing different file types on Linux.
You rerrors are different.
I would suggest, you search GetSatisfaction and our Bugzilla for those specific errors. If nothing is found, the best way is to file new bug reports and indicate all the details, file types, build you're using, etc.
If you don't have a free bugzilla account, signing up is quick and easy and will allow you to share your feedback directly with the development team.
