Songbird Bounty Centre
Whilst Songbird already offers free swag to developers (based on a points system), not many people know about it, and many bugs on bugzilla simply aren't recommended for the community to touch (they are too complex, or need to be done a specific way).
I propose Songbird sets up a bounty centre which lists the recommended bugs for the community to touch and how many points they are worth. It could also list the champions in the community who are doing a good job and praise them, and also list bounties such as bug hunts, with seperate RSS feeds for different types of bounties available which people could subscribe to (coding ones, bug finding, documentation, etc) .
It could also allow people and companies passionate about ideas to post money towards them. Amazon for instance could set up a bounty for $100 for someone to make an extension for their store on Songbird. They win because its cheaper then hiring a developer. But the community wins because $100 is still money :D Not sure how plausible this is though (because its hard to identify when the idea is entirely completed). It would require that the requirements to win the bounty are reviewed first obviously by staff if its from an external company, so that it can be validated as complete.
A bounty centre would certainly promote songbird development though, and most likely greatly accelerate progress. Developers win, POTI wins (because they could apply for bounties which reach a large enough amount of donations to make it worthwhile to do it commercially), and consumers win, because they get more features, and they can donate money to help get long standing bugs fixed. At the very least Songbird's bounties should be better presented, in a centralised manner.

You could post a bounty on bountyup.com and then tell people about it here, you pay people money do do an add-on and it will get done sooner than later :). I am not sure that we have the resources to put something up like mozilla does at this time but using external sources is always an option.
Depending on time I would totally grab some bounties :).

Inappropriate? This is a neat idea. I know that many people contribute to open source software just because they enjoy coding, improving the program, and helping a community, but maybe this would make it more exciting and encourage people to put a few more hours into it. The torrent site what.cd has a bounty system that motivates people to upload highly requested albums. The number of megabytes you have uploaded is the currency, and you can add some of your accumulated upload to a bounty for a particular album. A person who uploads that album can claim the bounty that people have contributed to. Maybe people could pool money or just some sort of points into a bounty for a feature they want to see made to encourage someone to code it.
Miro also has a neat system where you can adopt a line of code and donate money to have someone code from there: https://www.getmiro.com/adopt/

Inappropriate? When I read this last week I kept thinking about a presentation I heard at a conference awhile back for funding local journalism.
Essentially the community shares ideas about the kind of stuff they'd like to see covered in their area. Then a journalist (read in our case: developer) could look at the various requests, decide what they would want to report on (read: develop) then pitch it back to the community and attach a cost. The community then pledges funds, and once it is fully funded the journalist writes (read: develops) it. Then a percentage of the budget is spent to proof and fact check (read: test/QA) it.
The link above explains it much better. My sloppy synopsis is just to show how a similar system could work in our community too, assuming people are willing to pledge a few bucks to their favorite ideas like the Awesome Bar or the Now Playing List.

Inappropriate?Mozilla just today made it possible to donate to an add-on developer for specific add-ons: http://blog.mozilla.com/about_mozilla...
This is pretty similar to what we have been talking about since it allows you to support someone making an add-on. It kind of goes the other way around from the bounty idea though, since you support them after they already finished the add-on, rather than funding to have an add-on made in the first place.
-
Inappropriate?Yes, that is how it feels but in their FAQ section they say:
"Why did you call this “Contributions” and not “Donations”?
At Mozilla, we use the word “Contributor” for community members who contribute time and energy to our mission of promoting choice and innovation on the Internet. Our goal is that users who contribute money to developers are supporting the future of a particular add-on, as opposed to donating for something already received."
So they're using a pay-it-forward theory it seems. I really like the idea of bidding and funding a project you want to see, but this is a good start.

Inappropriate?Also I think we need a website like http://www.spreadfirefox.com/
It would be a great way to promote Songbird :)
For donations, each add-on developer can put a PayPal button by himself, it's not difficult ;)
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Alrighty Stevo... I made a couple and one is just for you...
-Take over and maintain the Customize Filter Pane add-on for Songbird: $20
-Album by Year sort for Songbird: $50
[I am willing to negotiate if the bounty isn't to your likings(don't be scared to ask, just remember I'm a poor college student) and I will pay up if you implement them - preferably via PayPal, since bountyup collects a portion of the bounty...]
And apparently the founder of Bounty Up is a high roller with a $1000 smackers for XPSF read/write support. wow. I kinda felt like a cheapskate after I saw that..
I’m kinda feeling like a Songbird prostitute... I like it.

Inappropriate?Bugs? In Bugzilla?
What's the product name?
I've seen FF, Tb, Sunbird(Calendar), but not Song bird. -
We're Songbird and while we're built on the Mozilla platform, we're not them. Not really sure if I'm answering your question, but there ya go! -
Inappropriate?@Michael I may take the first job ;)
BountyUp is definitely a good idea, but is that real money or is it somehow fictional ? -
umm, if it were fake money I'd expect a few more zero's! -
Inappropriate?Actually, I think BountyUp is getting closed down.. I spoke to the developer, his exact words were:
"Unfortunately, I'm in the process of winding bountyup down (lack of resources to keep it going), although I'm still looking for an appropriate partner to take it over." -
yola.com? :0) -
Inappropriate?there are plenty of site that do what that site did just take a look at these
https://www.bountysource.com/
http://www.kickstarter.com
http://www.horde.org/bounties/
these are just the few that i new about there are pleny more of them around -
great info thanks...i wish we could roll over the existing bounties we had into one of these.... -
You could anyway.. Try sending the developer of bountyup an email.. Its still down (so I assume its a dead project now officially) -
https://www.bountysource.com looks like the best option overall (although, its based on paypal, so you have to pay fees)..
The horse site appears isn't really open..
another alternative is: https://www.pubsoft.org
So.. Any chance you could pick one and add it to the GS menu laura? -
Inappropriate?I'll link whichever one has money for songbird projects in it! Care to ping me with the bountyup devs contact info Andrew?
-
Inappropriate?G'day, its joshua@bountyup.com, but if the site is down, his email is probably too.. I think it can't be a coincidence that the day after emailing him the site goes down... The full convo went:
| G'day, I submitted a bounty today:
| And it isn't showing up on the list (maybe due to the '), refer to
| http://www.bountyup.com/people/Andrew...
| Furthermore, I would like to confirm that I haven't accidentally
|pledged $100 (only set that as the target), as it only asked me for
| the target, and I can't afford to pledge $100 unfortunately...
|| I'll have a look at the quote. Unfortunately, I'm in the process of winding
|| bountyup down (lack of resources to keep it going), although I'm still looking
|| for an appropriate partner to take it over.
|| You haven't accidentally pledged $100 - that is the target amount, not
|| your personal pledge.
|| Thanks for using it!

Yeah, email FAIL. :0( -
Inappropriate? So where we going from here?
