Songbird Community Support and Development Competition
Songbird has enjoyed great successes in the past few months. It has finally built up its foundation sufficiently to appeal to vast masses of people. The only thing to do now, is to bring on the developers, and launch a development competition, much like Google has done. The result of Google's efforts were amazing programs that other mobile OS's still can't compete with, and I believe something similar could provide Songbird with even more innovative features which other media players don't possess.
A few prizes may include:
1) The most innovative extensions (choose 5 winners maybe). This will encourage people to develop new styles of extensions of Songbird and really take it on a test drive. Let the community vote for candidates, and let POTI decide the final ones. Don't demand them immediately, and instead give developers 3 or 4 months to complete them, but give them ideas.
2) Best Codec contributor. Songbird is in great need for better format support. This would potentially encourage developers to REALLY take on the task. Codec's accepted into the official code would be worth more points.
3) Community developer prizes. Developers are already eligible for prizes for contributing code. Just include it publicly in this competition
4) Most valuable community member. The community member who creates the most extensions, supports the community the best, etc. The best of the best. Someone who eats sleeps and dreams Songbird.
5) Best community support agent. A member of the community who stands out exceptionally for providing support, improving the wiki's, etc.
I seriously think it could be a GOOD time to plan a competition. The prizes could be MP3 players and even if it cost POTI $2000 for the prizes, I think if planned right, the money could be VERY well spent, and get the community more involved. It worked for Google/Android, and it can work for POTI/Songbird :)

I think this is a great idea too. I have had in mind some contest ideas along these lines. In my mind it was a series of smaller contests, but I like the idea and structure of launching it as one giant contest as well. I was using the video contest as a test of sorts to see how much traction community contests would get. I'm going to plug it in this weeks Birdbath again and I really hope a lot of submissions come in as the deadline draws near.
I'm sorry I won't be here to implement (or at least assist) in the execution of this idea, but I'll make sure to direct this to whoever replaces me and the people currently ion staff whom I think might be involved in this.
I’m excited
