Inappropriate?Have you tried installing the Quicktime Playback Add-on? I think you also need quicktime to be installed for this to work too, which should already be installed anyways if you are handling mp4 / m4a files.

Mp4 files are movie containers I believe. Unfortunately, video support only gets officially added 1.5 (however, some might play now).
If you mean m4p (as ethanjim has mentioned), those are protected M4A files from the itunes music store. For that, you need to install itunes, get it working in iTunes first (authorise it using your ITMS account), and then install the quicktime plugin in Songbird.
Or another way of dealing with m4p is to decrypt them and remove the fairplay protection, but in some countries (or/and Apple's licencing agreements), it may be illegal to do so
