Songbird has screwed up my iPod!
Songbird has made my music on my ipod almost unlistenable! It now crashes if I try and select the "music" option on the main menu. It will either freeze, and reboot. The other options (shuffle, videos etc) work fine.
Also, no other iPod management apps will now recognize the iPod (it showxs up under my computer as "iPod" but iTunes, floola etc will not see it as an iPod- not even as a USB mass storage device.

Inappropriate?G'day,
Are you sure that's Songbird's fault (I used to work at an Applecentre, and this may be faulty hardware).
Give Apple's 5 R's a go (Specifically reset and restore). If the computer doesn't see it (and it isn't a iPod shuffle), try using disk mode for the restore (google disk mode for your ipod model) -
Well, seeing as songbird is the ONLY app which will recognize the iPod, it is the prime suspect. I would love to restore the iPod via iTunes BUT it doesn't see the iPod in the first place.
Please note, I can see the iPod fine under My Computer, and I can browse the files via windows explorer. I just find it odd that Songbird is the ONLY app (apart form windows explorer) that will recognize the iPod. It deos sound as if the iPod has been corrupted, so I tried deleting ALL folders off the iPod, and it stopped rebooting!
However, iTunes STILL does NOT recognize it (even though it is now functioning perfectly) and neither does any other iPod management software apart form Songbird!
If I then add a single mp3 to the iPod via songbird, it seems to play fine. But if I re-add the entire backup of the old iPod then the same re-occurs.
Ideally, i would like to re-add the backed up music via another app, but none of them recognize the iPod :(
Any ideas? -
Inappropriate?G'day,
Google disk mode, and then restore using itunes. It should definitely be restorable then. -
Hey good news! I got home and mnaully reset the iPod from Songbird, then uninstalled Songbird and iTunes. I was listening to music on Winamp and when I plugged in the freshly-reste iPod, winamp recognized it, so I added all my backed-up music from the iPod, it synced up and it's working fine! So thanks to you Andrew, and hopefully the Songbird team will be able to recify the fault in future releases.
The fault I encountered is exactly the same as this users:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
The difference bing that he was Linux, and I'm on windows. I have exactly the same model as him, so maybe that's something to consider.
Anyway, i'm happy now, and i'll use winamp to manage my iPod. iTunes STILL doesn't recognize it BTW, but's a good thing in my book ;) -
Inappropriate?I'm glad you were able to get the iPod working again!
This is not an issue that I've heard of, unfortunately, so I'm not sure how we can reproduce this in-house. Was there something that you had changed about either your computer or your Songbird settings when it stopped working?
Also, I understand that you might be hesitant to try this, but have you reinstalled Songbird to see if it recognizes the iPod? I'm wondering if it may have been a problem with your Songbird profile; sometimes they can get corrupted during updates.
You also might want to try reformatting the iPod through the OS (quick format is fine, and shouldn't take more than 5 minutes). Once the format has completed, unplug it and it should reset itself. This may also get iTunes to recognize it again. -
Inappropriate?Hi Mari
I don't mind trying out Songbird again (I picked it first after weighing up all the alternatives), you mention a format via windows- I vaguely remember something about vista not allowing you format a HD/partition over a certian size to FAT32 file type. I've got an old HP app thta lets me do just that, so maybe iTunes will recognize after that.
TBH the only reason I would re-install iTunes is to update the iPod firmware (any 5th gen 80gb iPod classic owners care to let me know what I'm missing?)
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Hi ashxyz -
We've got an 80GB iPod Classic here at the nest, but my Vista VM is misbehaving at the moment, so I can't test the formatting issue. I also wasn't able to find any info on Google about formatting large drives... I'll try again soon with my VM.
Also, can you remember any changes that you made to either your computer or Songbird when the iPod stopped working? If this is an issue that we can reproduce, we can take a stab at fixing it...
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Okay, I'm trying to remember - the fault actually occurred after transferring music onto the iPod. The sync in Songbird was remarkably fast, but I doubt I ejected the iPod before disconnecting :( I may have just yanked the usb cable out of the iPod. It simply froze after that, I thought maybe it was low on battery, but my brother was taking it on holiday so I couldn't do anything until it returned from his trip.
He told me it "didn't work", and after some resets and tinkering discovered the "freezes/reboots if music is highlighted in main menu" iPod issue (as described in the link above). It does seem to occur when transferring large amounts of mp3's, especailly those without metadata- I peornally feel it's something to do with how the album art data is synced with the iPod, as the music plays fine in shuffle mode (!).
So there you have it, I hope that gives you an idea on how to re-create the bug, if you need any more info just ask. Thanks again for trying to improve a great application.
I’m hopeful

Inappropriate? That's really bizarre that it'll play in shuffle but not regularly...
The iPod add-on has been released to the community as open source, but if you log a latest nightly, the appropriate add-on version, and a fresh profile. It's possible that this will fix it.
Thanks!
