Songbird Issues & Improvements!
I love the interface of Songbird but I noticed a few issues that should be fixed so that Songbird is perfect (or as close as possible!):
1.attempting to play a song that no longer exists at that location does nothing, doesn't auto-skip to next song, no error message.
2. doesn't automatically pick up Folder.jpg/Cover.jpg as album art
3. doesn't automatically download album art
4. doesn't automatically download missing meta tags/info
5. no option to change default playlist columns, they just replicate that of the Library
6. no option to remove "Bookmarks" or "Downloads" from the left side panel
7. no option to remove the "Ratings" system from currently playing bar
8. no option to hide Back/Forward buttons when browser not open as songbird plays through playlist the currently selected track (blue bar indicator) does not follow with it; therefore it doesn't display the information (cover art) relevant to the current playing track
9. skipping through songs takes 2 seconds to resume playback
10. generally laggy performance (I do have a 300GB library of music though)

Inappropriate?4 is on the way, 3 we already have, although you have to manually invoke it, 2 sounds like a good idea, 1 actually does skip to the next song for me, could you explain 5 a bit more? 6, 7, and 8 are kind of trivial, and I son't understand the second part of 8, and we'll always be working on 9 and 10.

1. I retested this scenario and you are actually correct - functions properly :) It must have been an isolated incident so disregard #1, thanks.
2. Thanks :) Please do consider it! Oh, and remember JPEG as well as JPG ;) (Simple mistakes are a pain :P)
3. I'll have to look into where to find the setting to automatically download album art then, thanks.
4. Good news!
5. The Library columns of information are the defaults for each new playlist you create. So say you have Track #, Title, Artist columns in the Library list, you then create a new playlist and it will only have those columns. This is a nice feature, however I feel the user should be able to customize the defaults themselves for newly created playlists. Basically make a menu option somewhere where you select the default columns you would like Songbird to display for newly created playlists. Hope that clarifies it a bit more, thanks :)
6, 7 & 8. As Murphy emphasized, we would like to simply be able to customize the interface a little more - ie. remove menus we don't want and buttons we don't want. Or at least be able to hide the < > (Back and Forward) buttons at the top of the program window.
9 & 10. Thanks. Good news. -
You're clarified #5 perfectly. It's true that the columns you've set in the library become the defaults for new playlists, but you do know you can edit the columns of any playlist at any time, right? 6, 7, & 8 may sneak in in a future release, but we have a lot of other fires to put out at the moment. -
Yes, I do know that I can edit columns of any playlist, but I would like it if I was able to edit my defaults as a separate menu settings, instead of each newly created playlist inheriting them from the Library lists :)
I really do hope you implement the personal preference ones - 6, 7 and 8, as they allow the user to customize the player to be exactly what they want it to be and to neaten the interface up a bit more :)
Good luck with the fires and I hope you implement my suggestions here! If you do I shall certainly be recommending this program to all of my friends :) -
Inappropriate?I don't think removing Bookmarks and Downloads from the bar is trivial if a person has no use for them. If somebody doesn't care about the internet features such as Downloads, Bookmarks, or Radio, that can be a lot of unused items taking up space in the sidebar even if they are collapsed. I am thankful that iTunes lets me remove any of its sidebar items such as the Store, Podcasts, and DJ because I don't use them and it makes the sidebar less cluttered. Maybe there could be an option in the preferences that just lets you check or uncheck what items you want in it. This could include items from add-ons, such as if someone doesn't want "Concerts" to show up there because they instead use the data column in the media view to get information from the add-on. I just feel like it is problem that is taking freedom away from the user, but could be easily solved.

+1.
I would like to be able to customize the service-pane tree, too. Adding subfolders and removing every item would be really cool. -
Yes, thanks for that Murphy. I'm glad you agree with me and went a little more detail into why we would like to be able to customize the left pane tree also! I'm very pro-user-freedom :) -
Inappropriate?well i've been trying this nice program for the last couple of hours, and i've got some suggestion already.
the web browser lack of some features as the bookmark menu (at least, i couldn't find it), and a button for opening a new tab (though ctrl+t can be used), but it's fine. the keyword for the search engines doesn't seem to work. that's a reaaaally handy feature. it's implemented at its best in opera browser, where any search engine can be automatized that way.
the audio player is just a pain to use.. it's too damn SLOW! i've got a library of 360GB with more than 30k lossless and lossy files, and i like to play them randomly all together in a huge playlist. songbird simply struggle to manage the library and the playlist. my cpu (C2D 2.8GHz) ranges from 25 to 50% whenever i click anything in the menu, and it freezes sometimes. fb2k can do this waaaay much faster and lightly, so i think i'm gonna stick with it.
wavpack and musepack (and many others) aren't supported. you should provide some optional plugins to support other audio file formats.
the way of switching between the sidepanels installed is quite uncomfortable. a tab stack would be better, imo.
the mascotte is nice, but it looks like it's farting. it's just too easy to nickname the program as fartbird, lol (you shouldn't undertake this advice!!)
about the list:
1. dunno
2. & 3. this should be quite obvious!
4. freeDB is really useful
5. & 6. & 7. & 8. that would be nice too
9. & 10. i really hope that can be improved.
i'll give another shot to songbird when video playback will be supported.
I’m unsatisfied

Inappropriate?besides, the start up time is too long, and the ram usage is slightly high. it's using 240mb right now, because of my big playlist i guess.
