Songbird not playing m4a
Songbird does not play m4a files, and I believe it is a very used type of audio extension.. I believe you should work in an addon that allows playing to completely be better than itunes

I ended up resolving the issue last night. I saw somewhere in the fixes being released in Songbird 1.1 that they will be more specific in the error message with the GStreamer failure. They would clarify that Songbird requires Quicktime to be installed in order to play .m4a files.
Like you, I don't want to install any apple on my PC, so I found Quicktime Lite (Or Alternative if you want an actual player and not just the codecs). You can get QT Lite here: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Q...
You can read more about QT Lite/Alternative here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTim...
I haven't had any issues with it so far, and hopefully it meets your needs :)

Inappropriate? What Songbird version and which platform are you running on?
-
I'm running the new songbird beta version and I use Windows XP -
Inappropriate?Songbird is capable of playing m4a files. On Windows, it should use the Quicktime Add-on for playback. Do you have the Quicktime add-on installed?
-
I have this problem too, and after installing the Quicktime Add-on, I still get the same gstreamer error. -
If it needs the Quicktimes for playback, then you guys should metion this on the page listing files that Songbird support!!! -
I've installed the quicktime add-on, and I have same problem, but no gstreamer errors, the slider moves, indicating that the song is playing, but no sound from the speakers. -
I just can't play them, no error message... nothing I have the quicktime add-on installed -
Inappropriate?i can't add the music, sometimes it wont start to put it in, or it stops when i am putting the music in songbird

i am using the new sogbird version and he found all my 15.000 well-sorted tracks
2.000 of them are m4a, from old itunes times...
Problem:
since version 08pre songbird is not able to play any m4a files on my pc
i've reinstalled it several times, also cleaned up the registry without effect
got anybody a solution? cause i dont want to install any APPLE shit on my pc
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I hav this issue with 1.0.0 on Ubuntu 8.10. It's weird, since I was able to play .m4a's just fine with 0.7.
-
I got it to work by installing ubuntu-restricted-extras from synaptics. Try going to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Res... and following those directions -
Inappropriate?@Ginger
we had problems with m4a files on Windows, since it's dependent on QuickTime.
It shouldn't be a probelm in Linux though...
I can play m4a on Ubuntu 8.04 32bit with nightly builds out of the box just fine.
is that 64 bit you're running on?
Can you list all of your GStreamer plugins? -
Inappropriate?I'm using 64 bit Ubuntu.
I pasted the list of my installed GStreamer plugins here: http://rafb.net/p/rBxs0Q72.html -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same issue on Vista 64-bit w/ Songbird 1.0. I don't have quicktime or itunes installed. I'm currently using the Quicktime Playback plugin.
-
Inappropriate?Same situation as Kinnoch and Elfe2000 here. I have both of the Windows Media Playback and the QuickTime Playback addons installed, yet M4A's don't work. I do not want to put anything by Apple on my PC.
I’m frustrated.

Inappropriate?I seem to have this problem, too. Just upgraded to Songbird 1.0 from 0.7, and aac (.m4a) files no longer play for me. Some additional info: I'm running the 32-bit version of Ubuntu 7.10. The necessary Gstreamer codecs seem to be installed -- I can play aac files using the "Movie Player" app, which itself relies on GStreamer 0.10.14. Does the latest version of Songbird perhaps require a more recent version of GStreamer for aac playback to work? Let me know if there's any kind of simple troubleshooting that I'm overlooking that might help you out.
BTW, thanks for all the hard work on Songbird! Other than this problem, I'm enjoying the 1.0 version.
I’m heavily medicated.

Inappropriate?I just solved my problem with songbird (Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit) not playing m4a's by uninstalling, and then reinstalling songbird from a .deb.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate? Thanks to kinnoch for the solution!
Now all i need is for songbird to sync with my Sansa Fuze
Just made the switch from iPod!
I’m happy

Inappropriate? The problem only show on linux.
I did a test with songbird 1.0 (.deb)
The program ran well
I did a test with songbird 1.0 (tar.gz)
m4a don't run any way, and... MP3 DONT RUN
I think wma could not run too
I’m confident

Inappropriate?PS: linux 32 bits (ubuntu)
and linux 64 bits (debian) -with songbird 64 bits for linux
I’m confident

Just clean your profile before installing tar.gz on top of deb, otherwise you're using the old profile. -
No, i m not using olde profile. I clean every time before the install (i delete the blind folder calling .songbird2 stored on home directory and the profile goes away) -

Inappropriate?I had the same problem too. I had Songbird installed with the Quicktime add-on but it wouldn't play AAC, M4A files, even though I had Itunes with Quicktime installed as well (because I need the Itunes Store).
Since there was no way to solve this problem, I uninstalled Apple Quicktime and replaced with Quicktime Alternative. Magically, Songbird started playing AAC and M4A files! And Itunes works too, so everything seems to be perfect now.
I’m happy
