Songbird plays ghost song in background: Mashtape is culprit
Whenever I play a song from the band 'Okkervil River' I notice about 5-10 seconds into it that it plays another song in parallel, not from the same band (I don't recognize them, but I have a big library). It seems to always be this same song.
If I hit pause, the ghost song keeps playing. If I check Windows Audio Mixer, which shows me audio levels for open programs, it is in fact coming from Songbird. And when I close Songbird, it stops. I've tried reopening Songbird and also rebooting.
It seems to only happen to this one band. And when I change the song to another Okkervil River song, the ghost song restarts. If I change to a different band, the ghost song doesn't play anymore.
Running 1.1.2 1042
EDIT: This just started happening recently. I have many plays from this band and it's just something I noticed this morning when I woke up. I probably played the band yesterday, and it didn't happen.

Merged several other reports of this issue here. Just wanted to point to the official bug: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show...
It is resolved as a "Won't Fix" so the workaround (Disable "Video" tab) is the solution at this time.

I was able to go into the mashtape addon options and disable the 'Video' tab from being displayed, as this was the tab which always caused the background music.
This might work for you if you'd like to get your mashtape back.

I once had a similar experience: I figured out that it was a Flash-Video, that was running in the MashTape-Addon in the background.
I remember, that this was a very spooky experience, so I bet it's something like that in your case, too :-D
Check all your add-ons and your open Website-Tabs, and see if they play some kind of embedded media. Or disable all add-ons, that gather info from the web, and close all Tabs for testing, because it's possible that you don't even see the embedded media.

Inappropriate?Once I disabled internet, the ghost song stopped for me. I hope this helps...
-
I can confirm this stops the ghost song from playing. I'd rather keep my internet though, lol. Hopefully this helps the devs.
I also don't think I have the song in the background. Kind of catchy though... -
Haha, I prefer to keep internet as well. My ghost song totally sucks. -
Inappropriate?Okay, I don't even have the song that's playing the in background.
-
Inappropriate?Also... The same ghost song seems to come up after I play the same song in my library.

Inappropriate?I had this same issue. I disabled Mashtape and it went away.
But now I miss Mashtape. -

Inappropriate?I don't get a video tab just random ghost tracks playing. I just disabled the video tab. Hope this fixed it!
-
Inappropriate?Yeah I had a the same issue, and I'm pretty sure it was mashtape. I disabled videos and hopefully the problem will be solved.
I’m glad I got rid of the ghost tracks

Inappropriate?I also have this problem... when I play jonny cash ring of fire, songbird is playing two songs at once.
I start the song, and about 10 seconds in it has started playing a SECOND song and merging them together. I paused, and the song i started stopped playing. But the other still player. When I started another song the "background" song stopped... I restarted songbird and it happened again... I tried a third time and it happened AGAIN... this doesn't happen with all songs though, some don't cause this problem..
Also , I simply do not recognize the "second" songs, and I have a SMALL library. so either in both cases it was playing a song I forgot about having (unlikely as I have a small library), or it is some sort of web radio extension. -
Inappropriate?ok... i can't find the name of the song it plays when I play jonny cash ring of fire, but its always the same song that I do not have...
And if I play insanity by john marks I always get this song in the background:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up4L6p...
Mark McKinney - Middle America... which I DO NOT HAVE ON MY COMPUTER!
I only found out because that specific song actually SAYS the name of the song at the beginning (it starts with a guy going in his car and the radio announced gives the name of the song and the artist, then it plays the song) -
Read the rest of the comments - there's a solution. -
Inappropriate?no there isn't a solution, there is a WORKAROUND.
I already applied it, but I am more interested in providing whatever information and diagnostics needed to actually solve the problem. Disabling things is not really a solution. -
Inappropriate?@Tal Tamir:
Does the workaround (check the "videos" tab or even disable Mashtape) work for you, too?
Because that is the first step: identifying the component that cause the problem.
If it's Mashtape, then you could try to find out when it "automatically" starts the playback. Mashtape usually doesn't play the things automatically, but for some people it does this sometimes anyway. It might be a conflict with Hotkeys or with some Webpages. Observing, what user-action causes the "ghost songs" to start playing, would help fixing the problem.
Edit: oh, here is an official Bug report for this: http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show... -
Inappropriate?it happens to me too
it keeps playing this song in background !

Inappropriate?I have another solution. Start using some music SOFTWARE like amarok, not songbird try of software
-
Inappropriate?I was getting some pretty unsavory songs (from my collection? who knows... there are so many...) playing over some savory songs (definitely from my collection). About ten seconds into the song another song would begin playing... not a ghost either... just as loudly as the intended playback song. I disabled Mashtape and Shoutcast, restarted, and the problem seems to have abated.

Inappropriate?F mashtape. Anything that behaves that badly gets the boot.
Now here's the real issue -- I didn't install Mashtape because I hate mashtapes. If Songbird donated it to me, F them too.
I should be able to listen to my music without having to engage in a debugging session.
I’m angry
-
Inappropriate?songbird asks if you want to install "recommended plugins" on first run, and only on first run. One of the recommended plugins at the time was mashtape. you must have clicked yes and not noticed.
-
Inappropriate?I have Songbird 1.1.2 running on Mac OS X 1.5.7 Intel. I have used Songbird without issue for a while, but the last few times I've loaded it there is an unknown source of music playing shortly after I start any song. It is the same song every time, pretty sure it's nothing in my collection and it stops and starts as though it's buffering, although my router doesn't show any incoming activity that would indicate a streamed source.
I have disabled MashTape and Shoutcast plugins and this seems to resolve the issue, but I thought I'd throw the issue out the community in case it's something worth looking into.
Regards...

Inappropriate? When I have been listening to music using Songbird for a while, a 'phantom' song starts playing in the background. First of all it was a rap song, and now it is this song- 'On and On' by the Answer. I don't even know the song, had never heard it before Songbird started playing it. It stops if I close Songbird, but if I pause the song I am listening to, the phantom song continues to play. I've tried closing all my other programs, leaving just songbird, yet it still happens.

Inappropriate?Version: Songbird 1.1.2, Build 1042 (20090331142126)
Machine: EEE 1000HA
OS: WinXP Pro
On random shuffle, about 1 time out of 10, a second song will start playing underneath the first song about 5 seconds after the first song begins. this second song is not affected by pause (will keep playing if the first song is paused), but does respond to next or previous song (will stop playing, next song will play fine). It's not always the same song, and I can't reproduce it on demand, but it happens consistently.
