Songbird taking forever to mount my ipod (Ubuntu)
My ipod (5th gen 60GB video) takes forever to mount in songbird. Typically between 30 and 60 minutes. After it mounts it operates correctly. I'm running songbird in Ubuntu 8.04.

Inappropriate? What Songbird version do you have?
Is your iPod Device Support add-on updated?
What version is that? -
I have the same problem; 5th Gen. 30GB Video. Fedora 10. Songbird 1.1.2, build 1042. iPod device support 3.0.12.1028. Deleting the songbird profile and starting with an empty library has had no effect. -
Inappropriate?Version: Songbird/0.6.1 (20080623082739) (2008052304)
iPod device support 3.0.6 -
Inappropriate?i am having the exact same problem. any help would be greatly appreciated
I’m confused

Inappropriate?@hangon418
What iPod model do you have problem with?
@turkvu and hangon418
I will check this in my Ubuntu 8.04 and follow up here. -
Inappropriate?I had this problem, too. It turns out that iTunes opened at the same time, and that was holding up Songbird. Once I quit iTunes, it immediately mounted.
-
Inappropriate? There's no itunes in ubuntu...I don't have any other music managers open.
-
Inappropriate?im running ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron.
and my ipod is the 80gig classic -
Inappropriate?Exactly the same problem here - iPod 5G 60GB, latest firmware.
Songbird 0.6.1
iPod Device Support 3.0.6
Ubuntu 8.04 - Package from getdebs.net
Tested with iPod full and with iPod empty, same problem.
All other music managers are OK with this iPod, but none were open at the time. Device had already been mounted by Ubuntu, but hung on "mounting" under songbird. -
Inappropriate?Same problem, same iPod 60GB video.
Songbird version 0.7.0 (20080819112708) XPCOMViewer/0.9a (2008072921) Build 716.
Add-on version 3.0.9.716.
OS: Windows XP
Closing iTunes had no effect.

Inappropriate?I'm having this issue too, with an 80gb 5th gen iPod and Windows XP SP3, and all the latest updates for Songbird. I don't think my iPod has been updated since it was last working - but I know that sometimes iPod support gets behind the latest iPod firmware - is it possible that Songbird's iPod support simply needs updating?
I'm actually considering ditching the iPod for an MTP player. My Zen Micro works perfectly with Songbird every time, but sadly has only 5gb of storage... -
Inappropriate?Same problem 5th gen 30gb photo iPod.. on Ubuntu Hardy
-
Inappropriate?i just upgraded to the new 0.70 songbird. the gui is very pretty. i'll get back to you all on how well it holds up with the mounting problem.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. Ipod Classic 80gb and same specs as you. I would also greatly appreciate a solution to this problem.
-
Inappropriate?I could finally make it to work on my Ubuntu 8.04 with iPod Classic 80GB.
My problem was that I have Ubuntu Hardy on VM, so I need to set the priority to use USB port properly, otherwise native Ubuntu 7.10 takes over.
I've tested Songbird 0.8.0pre 20080903.with iPod 3.0.10pre add-on.
Also tested Songbird 0.7.0 with iPod 3.0.9.716 add-on.
It took me less than a minute (30-40 sec) to mount in Songbird for both versions.
Try to delete your profile by running in a terminal:
rm -rf ~/.songbird2
and run Songbird again to create a new profile.
Beware: It will delete your custom playlists and prefferences.
Also, you will have to re-scan the media to your library. -
Inappropriate?how would you clear out the profile under windows? I have the same problem (mounting device taking anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes) on:
WinXP sp3 + iPod Video 80gb
Songbird Version: 0.7.0 Build 716 + iPod Device Support v3.0.9.716
Another item of note: When it finally mounts, it's anyones guess whether or not I'll see 'all' of the playlists that are on the iPod. I'm also ending up with duplicate files on the iPod after trying to drag and drop files into new playlists on the device... Not sure any of this is related to these long device mounts and maybe SB is not getting all of the info from the iPod? -
Inappropriate?Just tried deleting %APPDATA%\Songbird2 and see what happens...
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem: Up to date g5 60gb iPod, Songbird 0.7.0 (20080819112708) (2008072921) Build 716 on Windows XP SP3. My iPod is set to be manually managed.
Once I force a quit from Songbird I can get the iPod to mount after waiting for maybe 10 minutes. At that point things look good, but copying new music to the thing is iffy... sometimes it copies over and sometimes not.
I’m hoping this can get figured out... but still love Songbird
-
Inappropriate? With Songbird still running I killed all processes related to iTunes (e.g., Apple Mobile Device Support, iPod support) and mounting the iPod happens without issue for me.
-
Inappropriate?I did as suggested, deleted the .songbird folder and made sure that I had the latest iPod device support plugin.
With songbird open I plugged in my 30gb Photo iPod, it took 24 sec for Rhythmbox to open and all songs in my iPod were accessible it was 2 mins 24 secs before songbird mounted my iPod and all songs were accessible.
don't get me wrong this is still my preferred method of iPod management, I would just like to see that load time improve..'
Great work guys, makes me wish I knew how to program.....

Inappropriate?Sometimes, doing the certain things with the device over and over can screw up the database and keep it in a old profile.
So, deleting the profile and running the application again to create a new one can help (not a 100% solution).
Deleting profile across the platforms instructions:

Inappropriate?I'd also like to confirm the LONG time to mount an ipod device in songbird.
* ipod 80GB Classic
Takes 20-30 minutes to mount. -
Inappropriate?Confirmed on Ubuntu 8.04, ipod 80gb video, and songbird 0.7. Both songbird and the ipod have fresh databases.
-
Inappropriate? It's too bad... the 'Get touring info for your area' add-on is really cool. And the player is sleek 'looking'. I hope that as SB is developed further, the speediness improves. I've read that it's "better than it used to be" compared to pre-v.70 releases - which is really surprising since I can barely imagine the app being useable in any way if it was even "slower".
I'll check back in on it in a few more revisions... it's still waaaay to clunky and slow to be useable for me at this point. And not just with the iPod. The upshot is that after reading some posts about this issue, I was reminded about MediaMonkey. That app has come a long way, and after installing it on 'top' of SB, it shows NO SIGNS of any of the slowness to mount problems I see in SB... so I doubt the issue has much of anything to do with anything being messed jup on my iPod... and clearing the SB profile based on Boris suggestion (thanks for that) didn't help at all.
"not quite there yet..." -
Inappropriate?I have to add one more complaint to this long list...
Songbird *takes forever* to mount my 5.5th gen Ipod Classic (80 Gb), until I cancel the mounting operation, then it "only" takes a few minutes to become usable in Songbird : in the Ipod Device Support window, the device is then mentionned as "idle", but it is accessible in reading or writing files
(Ah, another bug is that managing my ipod with songbird mess all my album art up, but it's not really the subject of this thread :p)
Thanks for the addon, but it would be really great if these annoyances could be gotten rid of, because Sondbird is by far the best music librairy manager on linux !
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?yeah fixing the album art problem would also be key. although i agree with xime that fixing the mount problem would be a great priority.
thanks though for your method of remounting. however canceling the mounting operation seems to take 10 or so minutes by itself. :(
I’m still pissed
-
Inappropriate?you're welcome, it's always a pleasure to propose methods that are more annoying than the bug itself :D
Btw, for me it depends : sometimes canceling the mounting works fairly quickly, sometimes it doesn't work at all (or mayby I don't have your patience :p)
I’m eager to see this bug fixed :p
-
Inappropriate?well if you look at your system stats while its "mounting" you'll see its writing a lot of data to the ipod-songbird db and using a decent amount of processing power to do so. i'm using ubuntu intrepid ibex w/ 180gb ipod classic. from when you mount, sync, and disconnect the ipod, there should be very minimal writing to the hard disk that songbird should do imo.
no way in hell i'd delete the .songbird directory. absolutely piss poor advice. rename it instead. -
Inappropriate?I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 and songbird RC3 (fresh install, no copying songbirds setting, no nothing), and I have this problem too with my Ipod Classic. this time It took somewhere near 3min and 49 sek. for songbird to mount (usually takes TIMES longer).
I look at the error console(while doing nothing else then mounting the ipod), and it came up with this error shortly after i plugged my ipod to the pc:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE) [nsISupports.QueryInterface]" nsresult: "0x80004002 (NS_NOINTERFACE)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://songbird/content/bindings/playlist.xml :: destroy :: line 631" data: no]
I have no idea if it had anything to do with the Ipod loading thing, but i figured it wouldn't do any harm to show it
I’m a sad very sad panda..

Inappropriate?I had the same problem with the XP version, itunes was not an open application but in my processes there was an itunes.exe running. as soon as I killed that it mounted immediately. Hope this can help
-
Inappropriate?I have a 80GB iPod Classic, and I have the same issue in Ubuntu 8.10.
I’m wondering how 1.0 was released after this issue was reported.
-
Inappropriate?I have exactly the same problem. 80GB 5.5 gen iPod, Ubuntu 8.10. I can tell a large amount of data is being read or written to my hard drive (my songbird install drive, not the drive containing my music). Mount takes a VERY long time. What's strange is my iPod's library is visible a few seconds after connecting it, so it seems like the "mounting" is not doing much.
-
Inappropriate?Any update on fixes for this? I have tried all the suggestions above with my 80gb 5.5g on Vista. It still takes a tremendous amount of time to mount and has made SB unusable for use with my ipod.
-
Inappropriate? It's been over an hour and my 80g Ipod Classic is still mounting
I’m tired of waiting
-
Inappropriate?Songbird 1.1.1, iPod classic 80gb, Ubuntu 8.10;
deleted profile - didn't work
let sit for 1.5hrs - didn't work
canceled mounting - didn't work.
Can't get it to finish mounting at all, always have to manually kill songbird-bin process...
I’m sad
-
Ubuntu 9.04 now, same problem, though lately the iPod would just unmount itself. Better for now, since it saves me having to kill the process. But would sure appreciate a solution on this one, it's a major downside for using Songbird. -
Inappropriate?Really anxious to see some support here. Without stable iPod support, Songbird's dead in the water...
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Same issue here.
Songbird 1.1.2, build 1042
iPod Classic 160GB
OS: Vista 64-bit
it's been "Mounting device" for over 2 hrs
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?Same problem, takes forever for my 80gb classic to mount. 1.1.2, ubuntu jaunty
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?same problem with an ipod Classic 160 gb & Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty 64 bit & latest version of all (songbird + ipod plugin).
someone can tell me the way to search the problem?
thanks
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Over a month later.
New version of Songbird released.
Still no fix and still can't add new songs to my iPod.
Should I go back to iTunes? Is there a schedule to have this bug fixed?
Anyone?
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate? Now that it fully supports embedded album art. I've switched to rhythmbox and given up on Songbird. If other linux media players can find ways to work with iPods, Songbird should have been able to by now. There's no excuse anymore. Newest version of rhythmbox here
-
Inappropriate?there are a lot of issues with the ipod Addon... I'm a linux user and I know what I'm talking about, but at least for the future this looks very promising: http://www.getsatisfaction.com/songbi...
-
Inappropriate?Same thing. iPod classic 120 GB, Vista Home Premium 64, songbird and the addon fully updated.
Takes, at the very least, 1 hour to finish mounting, and that's if I'm lucky.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? With me it also says 'Mounting...' all the time, but if I start transferring a track it transfers immediately, and afterwards it has finished mounting.
Maybe it's just the GUI that is lacking?
