Songbird Update Problems
Hi,
I have not been able to use my songbird application , after I made an update recently. I am not sure whether the update was an add-on update. I have a very weird problem.
As you can see, songbird does not render properly. In addition to this songbird hogs all the resources of my computer. If I click on anything , it takes ages to respond to my clicks. I can't even use songbird 'cuz it doesn't render properly. I tried to remove and then reinstall it, and the same thing happened. The OS I use is Ubunty 8.01. I would really appreciate if someone could help. Thank you.

Inappropriate?What feather are you using?
Walk me through the steps for upgrading you performed. -
Inappropriate?Well I started my app, and then songbird informed me that there were some updates, i think it was my themes (this is what i am not sure about.), is there a way to find out what update i performed..or where the themes are installed.?
But anyways that's pretty much it, after the updates the app started acting the way it is acting?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately I cannot help you without knowing what feathers/addons and their versions. If we cannot reproduce a problem, we cannot begin to fix it.
The only way you will be able to be sure is to completely clear off everything, install 0.6.1 (assuming that is where you started), and try to reproduce this bug again. -
I did start from 0.6.1. I deleted the old folder, and tried to install again, using the previously downloaded tar file, but the problem still exists. Is there a particular folder I could check without starting the app? Is the "extensions" folder an apt place for checking what "feathers/addons" I have? -
Inappropriate?@Safder
What Songbird version is that?
If you go to View -> Feathers, what do you see in there?
What feathers besides Rubberducky? -
I am using 0.6.1. As for the feathers, I cannot access anything, when I start the app. If you see the snapshot image I posted, you will see that the app does not render due to which I can't access anything on the app. I was looking at the "extensions" folder and i found "basic-layouts@songbirdnest.com" and "rubberducky@songbirdnest.com". So i am not sure whether this is a good place(folder) to look for "feathers", if not what would be a good folder to look for the "feathers" in the app? -
Inappropriate? Please delete your Songbird install directory and ~/.songbird2 (it is hidden by default). Then start again.
-
After deleting the hidden file, I was able to start songbird properly. The feather which is causing the problem is "Blak". I think this is what is causing the behavior -
Inappropriate?Just to clarify, your steps to reproduce this are:
1. Install SB 0.6.1
2. Install Blak
3. Install 0.7rc build on top of 0.6.1?
Please verify my steps. Installing Blak onto a clean 0.7rc build works fine for me on Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit. -
I didn't quite understand you on "o.7rc build" issue. Is this a new version of SB? if it is, how do i install it? I installed SB 0.6.1 and then installed Black, and I get that weird behavior. I was checking out the comments on the "Blak" feathers page, and found someone else facing the same problem. Do you think this is something to do with the feather? -
Inappropriate?Go to developer.songbirdnest.com and click on Nightlies on the right. There will be a link on the nightlies page to get the latest 0.7.0 release candidate.
Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant by "update". Could you please clarify everything you did before installing blak originally? -
Inappropriate?Well I did what you asked me to do, I figured out that RC stood for "release candidate" version and you're right, the "Black" feather does work for the RC version. However I did not perform the RC update initially. I was updating the latest "Black" feather, and that's when the problem started.
As for my original steps to reproduce the behavior
1. Install SB 0.6.1
2. Install Blak
-
Inappropriate? Are you saying you cannot get Blak to install in a clean 0.7.0rc3 build? I have no problems on 0.7.0rc4 on Ubuntu.
-
Inappropriate?Sorry for not being clear enough. I am saying I did get it to install Blak on a 0.7rc3 build, but I couldn't install it on a normal 0.6.1 (no 0.7 rc3)
-
Inappropriate?Ok...since you can install Blak on 07rc3, this problem is a non-issue. The 0.7 release is coming.
-
Inappropriate?I posted a comment on the addon's webpage. Hopefully this alerts others to this issue. Thanks.

this solves the problem

Inappropriate? Thanks for your help, however I had one more question regarding 0.7 rc3 issue, have they removed the left side pane (which was in 0.6.1)?
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? No. If you are using Blak, it is a rubberducky-based feather. When using 0.7 and trying to use a rubberducky-based feather, the service pane hides itself. This is a known bug. Place your mouse to the left of the window until it turns into a hand-cursor. Click and drag to the right.

Inappropriate?okkkk this is weird, but after I installed 0.73, I am not being able to play any of my files. Is there something I am doing wrong. I try to play the files, and it doesnt do anything. I can use shoutcast and stream online, but can't play files saved on my disk. Any suggestions?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? Can you try running songbird -P, create a new profile and try to import media.
-
Inappropriate?Ok before I did what you suggested, i did a clean reinstall, deleted the hidden files and ran the app again. Now it works perfectly fine..and i like the new "GONZO" theme...it's pretty slick...anywhoo Thanks a million..
I’m happy and thankful
-
Inappropriate?That's good to hear...Thanks.
