Songbird won't start on Ubuntu 8.04
Songbird 0.7 won't start on Ubuntu Hard Heiron. When I try to start it from a console, it says:
./songbird: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected
I just installed Hard Heiron from scrath on this machine. It's fully updated.
I also tried with Songbird 0.6rc4 and rc1, got the same error.

Inappropriate?I've tried Songbird version 0.5, it worked. But 0.6+ won't work, all with the same error.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Where did you get tarball from?
Make sure you get correct tarball from Linux download directory (32bit vs 64 bit).
Where did you install?
In your home directory, in a root directory?
Does it get extracted, so you get the error when trying to run ./songbird ?
Only error, no visual start after that?
Do you have hard disk partition you installed on?
If yes, can you execute anything from there?
Possibly, the filesystem on the harddisk partition you installed at first is probably mounted with the "noexec" option. That means that no programs whatsoever on this partition may be executed directly. -
Inappropriate?Make sure you are downloading Songbird from getsongbird.com. I have never had this problem on Ubuntu; and I have been using Songbird since 0.2.

Inappropriate?Boris:
1) I got the tarball from www.getsongbird.com, and it's the 32bits version, like my Ubuntu.
2) Had not installed it, I simply extracted it, made the folder mine (chown), made sure "songbird" was executable (chmod +x) and tried to run it. No success. It was extracted to /opt. CDed to the directory (/opt/Songbird) and tried to run it,with and without sudo, getting the syntax error I told about on the post (./songbird: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected ).
3) About the partition, it is in the same partition as my Ubuntu, and yes, I can execute things on it without problem.
ANYWAY, I found a "workaround":
I downloaded the .deb version.. it installed and worked straight forward, like a charm.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? With the tarball, you should be able to download, extract and run from anywhere without modification (as I do every day).
Glad to hear the .deb works for you. There must be something in your configuration that is throwing off the Songbird tarball.
