Sort artist names by the sort name tag
MusicBrainz automaticly adds a "albumartistsort"-tag beside the "artistname"-tag to files.
For example:
when the artist is named "Elvis Presley", the sort name is "Presley, Elvis" or when the artist name is "The Whitest Boy Alive", the sort name is "Whitest Boy Alive, The".
And this also works with non-english names like "Die Ärzte"(sort name "Ärzte, Die").
MusicBrains is providing this information for every single artist in there Database. Why don't use it instead of simply ignoring "The" and "A" in artist names?
it would also be possible to sort artist by the last name.

Inappropriate?Having just discovered MusicBrainz I am in full support of this idea!
Some kind of mechanism for seperating the display of the artist name from how it is sorted would be fantastic. Selecting a custom tag by which to do this, such as the one used by MusicBrainz or something entirely homemade, would be just awesome and solve a problem which I personally find extremely annoying. I don't want to read it "Ross, Diana and The Supremes", I want it to read "Diana Ross and The Supremes". But, I do want it filed under R.

Inappropriate?Better collation of metadata is obviously one of the key advantages MusicBrainz has to offer. Offering the ability to sort/filter by artistsort/albumartistsort would be great.
-
Inappropriate?you already can sort by album artist in the list and filter pane visualization, i think it was introduced in version 1.2
edit: agree, musicbrainz is a great tool and should be supported/used more widely -
Inappropriate? You've missed the point of this request; albumartist is not albumartistsort. The sorting fields provide a way to collate names and titles in a fully formalised manner, much as you find in a book library.
-
Inappropriate?i think that SB already uses the -sort alternatives of artist and albumartist.
in my collection, "The Streets" are between "Streetlight Manifesto" and "Stretch Arm Strong", because they are sorted as "Streets, The"
now I'm using SB 1.4.1b1 but I'm pretty sure it was already the default behavior on 1.2 -
Inappropriate?Alessandro, you're right in that Songbird handles names which begin with 'The' and I think also 'A', but that's all it can do and it's manual - it's looking specifically for those words at the begining of artist names and then sorting those artists appropriately. Songbird does not sort using sorting tags of each file.

Alessandro, the above link should help you gain you some comprehension of what we're actually requesting.
I'm quite surprised at Songbird's lack of extended metadata handling, particularly where MusicBrainz is concerned. -
Inappropriate?i didn't recognized the problem because i was checking on several band name where the sorting was fine.
Even non-english names were handled (Die Toten Hosen) so i assumed that the -sort version of the name was used.
This problem is better recognizable on artists like Bob Dylan or Tom Lehrer and such that we except to have sorted not by their name but from their surmane since the -sort tag says "Dylan, Bob"
Now i can agree and add myself to the list of peoples who would like to see this change in SB :)
cheers (and sorry for the waste of time)
I’m silly
