sort by "album artist" OR "artist" (if "album artist" is empty)

I've found the best way to deal with compilation albums (those with multiple artists) is through the "album artist" tag. The only problem is that the "album artist" tag is empty for most albums with only one artist. It would be great to be able to sort by the first non-empty tag "album artist" or "artist."
