Sorting artists without the prefix "The"
Songbird needs to have the ability to ignore the prefix "The" in a band's name. The result of it being unable to do this is a jumbled library that has about a 4th of it's bands listed under "T". iTunes has always been able to make this distinction, and it is currently my biggest (and basically my only) issue with Songbird.
I've read posts from developers that make me believe the problem is very fixable and it's only a matter of time until it's included. So I just wanted to try and get the word out some more and see if it can't be included in one of the next updates.

Inappropriate?yeah i'm annoyed indeed with this. Some files happen to be named without the "the" word (like "Beatles" x "The Beatles"), so that songs from the same band and the same album will be far far far apart on the library, which means a little time wasting.

Inappropriate? That's definitely on our radar but has not been implemented yet. I'll add your inquiry to the bug report.

Inappropriate? This is made worse by the fact that typing the name of an artist in the artist pane is too jumpy to get more than one or 2 letters in. Its now a question of what pisses me off more, the Songbird sort problems, or iTunes inability to play certain formats.
-
Inappropriate?i know what you mean. think of it this way, at least you know for certain that one of the problems will be fixed :)

Inappropriate?I don't think a music player or library manager should do something like this. It would be better to leave out the "The" in artist names in tags.
-
It would be better to import artists under a uniform name. However, people who share music or a computer might end up with songs from one collection which list an artist with "The" and another without. You could just reformat them, but people are lazy. For the time being it would be better if people left out "The" but it would be best if Songbird could do this, as itunes does it. -
I disagree; using a service like Last.fm is pointless if artist names are changed just so that a music player will sort correctly. Or am I missing something obvious? -
@insomnius:
Last.fm is perfectly able to map artist names correctly, For example, "Lastname, Firstname" will be linked to "Firstname Lastname" (as long as there isn't a mistake in the database, whicvh will be fixed upon request). When I scrobble a track tagged with "Hollies", it will be scrobbled as "The Hollies" as well. -
Inappropriate?@Dominik George Cheers - I really should have investigated myself rather than dashing off a comment when I had not much time, but thanks for clearing that up for me.
In that case, I guess my desire for this function is just for aesthetic reasons. -
Inappropriate?C'mon, if Songbird developers are serious about their product they need to work on this "The.... " issue regardless of Last.fm
I can understand why it's probably not among the top 10 on their hot-items list, but hey, no one should have to go through all the bands (36 'The..." bands in my library at the moment) and alter their names. Lazy?? Maybe. But isn't that what making a friendly interface all about - to make things as simple and easy for the user??
...Besides, it just looks lame to have 'The Kills' shown just as 'Kills' or 'The Fall' shown as just 'Fall'.... or 'Cure' instead of 'The Cure'.

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate? Then if this is implemented, please make it configurable, and don't forget articles in other languages ...
I’m indifferent
