Support for chiptunes and video game music formats.
Add support or addon to allow playback of chiptunes and video game music format. See for example OverClocked Chipamp, a collection of winamp plug-ins for formats like .spc .usf .gbs and .gym. This would make songbird the most versatile media player ever made and appeal to a larger audience. I know for a fact many winamp users in the VGM-community doesn't want to make the switch because they don't think anyone is interested in implementing this.

So I too love old video game music formats and have a bunch of songs in various formats including .NSF, .SID, .SPC, .GYM, etc.
I use on a daily basis Linux, Windows and Mac and I use a different player on each one to handle these game formats (Winamp for Windows, Audacious for Linux)
I'd like to switch to Songbird since it runs on all three platforms, but the lack of a game format addon is holding me back.
Well, since I'm a programmer I decided to actually do something about it.
I took the 'Game Music' addon for Song Bird (http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...) that works only under Windows and is fairly buggy and I took a peek at it's source code.
Within about 20 minutes I had the Add On modified to work with the newest Songbird 0.2 and I have .NSF playing under Linux.
Now that was just a quick hack, I'd really like to be able to support sub-tunes, meta data, more formats and full support for all the formats across all three platforms.
That's gonna take a bit more work though :)
Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm working on it :)
I’m happy

A considerable amount of my music is in these chiptune formats. I signed up to show my support for this idea. I think it's brilliant and could turn Songbird into quite possibly one of the most complete media players ever in regards to format support. The VGM listening community is getting more massive by the day, as well!
I’m optimistic

Inappropriate?Thank you, I most certainly will! The VGM-community will thank you forever when it happens!
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Anso's right -- there are a lot of people who have vast amounts of music in VGM formats that will be hesitant to switch, myself included. I need a media player that will play .nsf and .spc files at the very least (NES and SNES music, respectively).
-
Inappropriate?Whoops. LIked the idea without posting.
Yes, it would be wonderful to have a player that would play vgm formats. I have a variety of media players just to play the collection I have and it gets pretty tedious to have to alternate between them all. If you guys made one that would play them all, that would be a godsend. -

Inappropriate?i think that this is a good idea, particularly if you include a button to 'convert' the files into an mp3 for use on digital players, like an ipod (hint: i've got one).
regardless, i think that adding this would instantly gain the support of a wide network of VGM fans - whether it's limited to either just older (nes, snes, gb) or newer (ps/ps2) chiptunes. heck, add .sid support too and get all those c64 fans in the door!
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? This would be great, especially since I don't use Windows at home anymore. Some kind of option to convert or even stream to .wav would be really handy.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? This would be awesome! I'm really hoping for SPC, VGZ, and USF support.
I think ideally, Songbird should allow new file formats to be supported by user-created plug-ins (as long as this doesn't degrade performance too much).
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?Word. I'm all for this.
In addition, can you add support for the Monkey's Audio lossless format? I know it's not as widespread as its cousin FLAC, but its compression rate is actually a little bit better, which spread across many songs adds to many saved gigs of space.
So yeah. Chiptunes and .ape.
I used Zoom Player while I still had a PC, so I'm looking forward to watching this kick its ass. -
Inappropriate?Another option might be a winamp plug-in wrapper. It's the easy way out and not the best way but in the worst case scenario it's an option. I personally hope for new addons developed by the songbird team together with or based on the code by the developers of the winamp plugins.
Though I'm pretty sure a plugin wrapper wouldn't work cross-platform, but what do I know ;P

WinAmp plug-ins are Win32 DLLs, so a full-featured Win32 emulator would be required to truly get 100% compatibility. However, I think it's safe to say that most WinAmp plug-ins would use a very limited set of Win32 calls, so emulating this might not be too bad. -

if you haven't got anything constructive to say, or doesn't even like songbird I don't think you should be replying to a topic at the songbird getsatisfaction boards... Stick with Winamp and be satisfied instead :) In other news, Winamp is closed source and doesn't work on Mac or Linux, a good reason to implement video game music formats for songbird. -
This really isn't a relevant post. -
Inappropriate?wrapping winamp input plugins seems like a good idea.
didn't xmms do this anyway?
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Definitely. Songbird absolutely must have this. It is a must for alot of VGM ReMixers. and such.
I'm all for it. -
Inappropriate? This would be awesome, as chiptunes/modules are the only things I still play in Winamp.
Would also like to see the old popular module formats like S3M, MOD, IT and XM. There's already open source libraries available to decode man of these formats.

Agree'd. Module formats will definitely be another great addition. -
Inappropriate? This topic is tagged as 'implemented' would any official rep like to comment on that?

From the Songbird management view this topic has no status, so if you're seeing something else it's a bug in Get Satisfaction. If you could take a screen shot for me of what you're seeing I can pass it along to them. Thanks! -
Aww, way to get my hopes up. It happens when searching for the topic.. here's a screenshot: http://soundscape.escariot.net/getsat... -
perfect, thanks...and yeah, sorry. :0( -
Inappropriate?I too would like to see this file support realized! I'd like to help somehow. But my audio knowledge is sketchy. I first need to learn up Songbird's API and gstreamer before I can help though. If Songbird gets mod/s3m/xm/it and various vgm formats supported, I will be a happy, happy man.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I very much want this! Especially since nothing else on Linux can play these video game music files.
I’m wanting this BADLY!!!
-
Audio Overload can play these formats, and it has a Linux build:
http://www.bannister.org/software/ao.htm -
Thanks, I'll check that out.
But it would still be nice if this was integrated into Songbird via a plug-in :) -
@ Raptor007: You are right, chiptune formats are playable in linux via AO.
AO is a nice idea, but have you tried it? I have used it on my Mac. Sadly, I find VGM is not worth listening to in that player. The playback options are very limited compared to the winamp plugin. While the list of AO's supported chiptune formats is impressive, I'm guessing AO falls far short of what most chiptune listeners would consider a functional mediaplayer. -
Inappropriate?I wholeheartedly agree that this would be an awesome idea. Songbird has to support as many formats as winamp (+ plugins) to become a serious competitor.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? This would be sweet, it's such a pain to go searching around finding plugins to run these formats. Make Songbird the ultimate media machine!

Inappropriate?Hi everybody,
I would like to share to you my webpage dedicated to chipmusic (8bit music, lo-fi music, micromusic) :
http://www.woolyss.free.fr/chipmusic.php
You will find many links to :

- good chiptrackers (without hardware emulator)
- chiptune webradios
- chiptune composers
- chiptune netlabels
- chiptune hardwares
- chiptune generators
- more and more audio demos about each VSTi plugin !
You can find good chip players for all formats here :

Inappropriate?Hey, that's great. I, too, am a programmer, but I'm just out of college so I have no idea how to even begin programming something like this. If you can tell me, maybe (just maybe) I can help you out.
I’m thankful
