Sync with existing IPOD playlists
New to all this, so please help. Got a new IPOD Classic (first player), loaded originally with Itunes, got a new computer, noticed songbird for alternative management software, downloaded and tried to add a new playlist using songbird. Software popup states that I need to erase IPOD and resync using songbird. Is there a way to just add songs to IPOD without erasing everything first. ALSO, is there a way to load movie files (mp4, avi, wma, etc,) using songbird?

Inappropriate?Hi Dprice,
Could you be little more specific on what you are trying to accomplish...
Questions....
Do you have any music on your new computer or is it all on your iPod?
(I can tell you how to take music off your iPod and put it on your computer)
Are you wanting to move playlists from your iPod to Songbird?
(I think i might be able too...i forgot.. ill see)
What Operating System are you using?
And video support is not included in Songbird yet... it will come by April '09 or later :) sorry.

I am using windows xp pro. I have music on an external hard drive and on my IPOD. i was using songbird to organize and rename songs, artist, album, genre on the external hard drive not yet on my IPOD.
I Copied songs from hard drive to songbird and renamed as needed, then I tried to copy newly renamed files to IPOD when i got the message about erasing IPOD and resyncing.
So, I'm trying to add newly renamed songs to my existing IPOD library.
Also, is there a way to replace newly renamed files on songbird back to a place on my external hard drive for future use?
and YES, i would like to know how to get existing IPOD playlists, library, etc off of IPOD to computer. Would this help sync the two?
FINALLY, If I do all this will i be unable to view existing movie files already on IPOD? -
Inappropriate?Ok, so you have a mix of music on your ipod and external...are they completely different music collections, a mix (half on ipod), or the same music collection?
Songbird does not rearrange your files or folders (just yet; that feature is also coming in April) It will only edit your metadata, and keep your files where they are (on a similar note, Watch Folders is coming in February ;)
No matter what, you are going to have to let Songbird take over your ipod to sync it (same goes with when you are trying to sync ipod's with different itunes libraries.. you can Not do it) so all your existing songs on your ipod are going to have to go.
And Songbird can not sync video files to iPods yet, so yes, you will be unable to play those videos on your ipod.
My suggestion is to:
1) take all your music/videos/playlists off your ipod first,
2) put them where you want them on your computer/external
3) import ALL songs into Songbird (and playlists)
4) Sync what you want from songbird onto your ipod.
Is this ok with you? I'm trying to get a feel of your problem, the downsides, and what you want to do before I tell you what/how to do it...

Inappropriate? To get music off your ipod:
1. Plug your iPod into your computer.
2. Open iTunes and select ‘Enable Disk Use’ in the iPod Settings/options page. (if you never installed itunes and can't do that, the rest should still work)
3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, the iPod should be automatically detected as a portable hard drive.
4. Click on the iPod icon or the iPod portable hard drive letter to open the contents of the drive.
5. In the start menu, search for "folder options" and open it, Click the 'View' tab, and then check (enable) the option “Show hidden files and folders.” You should see a folder called "iPod Control"
6. Open the “iPod Control” folder, and then the 'Music' folder.
7. The Music folder contains the iPod’s music and videos, divided into folders. Copy the library/folders to your local computer hard drive (where ever you would like)
8. The files copied have unintelligible four-letter file names. Dont worry, they still have all the metadata info in them.. Then you can import them into Songbird...
OR you can get a program like iDump: http://www.download.com/iDump/3000-21... or Yamipod: http://www.yamipod.com/ to do it for you without changing settings or such...
To get playlists off: (harder)
try iPod to Computer Transfer 4.8: http://www.download.com/iPod-to-Compu... (your going to have to have itunes installed :( ) then transfer playlists to Songbird.
Just a note, always try to have your media and playlists backed up in the future... it saves a lot of hurt ;)
