Take metadata to the next level
Metadata editing is great, but I would like to see some additional batch editing functionality. Find and replace, append, number consecutively, etc would all be great additions, they could probably be implemented as an add-on. There could also be some way to take the metadata and use it to create a filename for each track so, for example, I could rename multiple files with "trackname from metadata, band from metadata".mp3
The easiest way to do this I believe would be to put an "advanced" tab in the current metadata window with this functionality.

Inappropriate?Personally, I use EasyTag (http://easytag.sourceforge.net/) to do this. Works for multiple formats, not just ID3. You can fill tags from filenames and vice versa with A LOT of flexibility. You are not restricted to a couple naming schemes to work from, you can manipulate any. i.e. if you have an album named ## - Artist name Song name Album name you can set it to handle batch functions from these names with little effort.
Also has preview and revert options so you can switch back easily if you mess up or don't like it. All that ability would seem like a bit of bloat in Songbird and not fit in well with the interface.
BTW it's cross-platform ;x

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?I use mp3 Tag&Rename and have been for years; it would be nice just to have the "Save and Next" feature and some of the other items that that app does.
I'll check out EasyTag, too... but the point is, there are external editors out there, but without a "refresh library" or portion thereof, using an external editor doesn't change/update the metadata in my library (I have to select/remove items, then drop in the recently-edited ones).
Wouldn't it be great to highlight some tracks and say "Library -> Refresh selected..." so if we do use external editors, we can quickly point out to songbird which files have been updated.
I’m crazy like that

Inappropriate?or the download button automatically renames the file to something consistent with the rest of your library

Inappropriate?Love this idea, was about to post it myself
like myrkat, I use Mp3Tag. I love how well it works, but it can still be tedious switching the format between %artist% - %title%, %artist%/%track% - %title% etc. I think it could be taken even further, allowing for complex rules to be put in place for renaming. For instance, if a filename stars with two digits and a dash, its 99% likely to be a track-number, not an artist name (in my library at least). In my case, 3 - 4 simple rules would capture 100% of the track data in my library.
@doom0r, does easy tag support something like rules? I must give it a go
I’m confident
