Talk to us.
The biggest news 'round these here parts isn't even ours for a change. Get Satisfaction launched a new version of their site which changes the way you talk to us. From our side of the fence there are some pretty cool features. We're so excited to have a place to link our Getting Started pages, Bugzilla and other useful things, and really dig getting to set the tone of our homepage a bit more. That being said, you all actually spend more time within the interface than we do given that updates come in via email and RSS feeds and we have our own special admin view.
So how does the new interface feel to you? Would you prefer a more traditional discussion forum? Will the the new layout affect your participation in our community?

Trying to show my s-i-l a good time. Ugh. -
Inappropriate?G'day,
Whilst I don't think a forum is neccessary for problems, I'd certainly still like to see one set up for developers. Not sure if a forum is the right way though, maybe something like Facebook groups/drupal organic groups?
Because its difficult for developers to ask for help still.
And maybe also have one section for general chat, but a minor one ;)
The Getsatisfaction updates are great though.
PS. Have a good weekend guys :P

Inappropriate? You know, when I was young, it was my dream to become a super star idea man. :D Thank you for your kindness, Laura, I love being here and I plan on sticking around.
This new GetSatisfaction design isn't too bad, it's just more difficult to see active topics on, and I get the feeling that less people will be part of discussions. Even though it is still possible to make new topics and respond in topics, they seem to be buried away now, like the time of discussing has ended, and the page is now just an archive of topics passed. I know they are still working on improving the layout though, and I have left several suggestions for improving it, so hopefully it will get better.
I'm not sure if having a forum would be better or not. On one hand, I do think it would encourage deeper discussion. It is usually easier to see new and active topics on forums, they allow you to collaborate more with people with private messaging, and I think people feel more comfortable having general discussions, because there isn't really an option for a general discussion topic on GetSatisfaction. For example, I have thought about making a topic where people could post screenshots of their Songbird, but I'm not sure how to post it; as a question thread that says "What does your Songbird look like?". I could, but I just feel like a question topic on GetSatisfaction is intended for someone who actually has a question about how to use the software.
I do, however, like how easy it is to follow topics on GetSatisfaction, show your support for an idea without posting a response, and how the conversations are non-linear (they are like Google Waves, where you can insert comments underneath other people's comments, instead of always having your post placed at the end of the thread). I don't know if there is any forum software that has these benefits, or if GetSatisfaction will ever get some of the benefits of forums, so I don't know if having one or the other is a perfect solution. -
Inappropriate?Oh yeah, me too, and really pleased with the priority list they posted of what they're working to bring back/add in next.
-
Inappropriate?I think Murphy makes a really valid point about the fact that even exciting topics in GetSat get burried really quickly and are difficult to find. I know some go mental like the Playlist one etc but some are really bright shiny sparkley fantstic ideas that get love for a week or two and then sink down the recent activity list and nothing happens. Maybe make an effort to write a bug for every idea that gets more than 20 +1s? I don't know if that would be feasable.
I think one of the problems is the huge number of duplicates which makes it difficult to keep a track of what people are currently in to. I don't know if a forum would provide a better method of keeping ideas together?
PS...I've been offline for weeks and I've now moved house (down the road) and I've just got my broadband up and running - hello again guys! Talking of off topic - someone recommend me some good gangster films please - I've recently watched Scarface, The Godfather and Carlito's Way and I'm getting quite in to it :)
I’m thoughtful
-
Goodfellas. The Usual Suspects. The Departed -
Yeah, I liked Goodfellas and I've just finished the Godfather Part II - which was good but not as amazing as everyone made out. I've got the usual suspects on my shelf and I still haven't watched so I'll do that next. My friend is bringing round the Departed this week :) Good times. Cheers! -
The Usual Suspects is amazing. -
duly noted. I'm watching it tonight! I'll report back later :) -
Inappropriate? And Tim/Murphy's comment on topics getting "buried away" maybe think of an idear' ... Laura had trouble merging a topic once because of GS's less than spectacular search.. so she tagged it "purple unicorn" to be able to find/merge it... So how about tagging topics with useful/unique names for better access in the future.. Again, this doesnt help the problem with the "love for a week or two and then sink down the recent activity list" problem... but it's a a start...
For example, I just went through Murphy's ideas and tagged them.... murphy... :-P
So now do a search or look at the tags for 'murphy'.. and see what you get :-)
CAUTION: Awesome Idea Overload!!
I think we(or you individually) could tag things with a unique name(s) for easier access.. I don't think you could ever completely solve the fact that ideas are going to slip away from recent activity, cause no single idea is so awesome that people are constantly going to leave a comment or "me too" it... That's what SteveL's Idea Kitchen is for anyway, Showcasing the most popular ideas..
I’m secretly in love with Murphy...
-
it's no secret... -
figures. im never that good at hiding my love.. just think if we had a girl champ!? i would be all over her! -
or worse.. just think if we didn't have you!! sad day. -
lulz....Remeber rule 30 :P -
We do need some girl champs Michael...go rally a few for me would ya?
What's rule 30 Tim? No girls in Fight Club? -
Rule 30 is that there are no girls on the internet...it originated from one of those sketchy forums like 4chan or something. Anyway I think the point was that anyone professing to be female is probably a middle aged fat blad texan. Perhaps it's a little out dated now, eh? haha :) Maybe it just depends where on the intertubes you hang out! -
Inappropriate?Oh Michael, run away with me... :P
Truthfully, though, thank you so much for supporting the ideas. The past few months, I have spent more time being part of this community than anything I have been part of before. I always try to think up new ideas, and I just hope that even if they never become anything useable, they do change the way people think about the program, or motivate them to come up with other ideas. And thank you for tagging all of my threads- I have lost track of a few of them and forgot they even existed :D. I might have a few more I plan on making, but I do try to space them out a relatively evenly. I do hope that some years from now, when I have less to work on in life, I can learn how to code more and work on open-source projects like Songbird and Firefox, or become part of one of their teams so it is my job to come up with ideas all day and make them a reality.
And what is up with GetSatisfaction's search? It just doesn't seem to rank results by any of the usual properties like how recently the topic was made or posted in.
I’m glad this place exists
-
Inappropriate?love it. I'm gonna go check out that purple unicorn.
I’m gonna call out Michael and duel him over Murphy because I need his awesome ideas in my life....
-
i deleted my "purple unicorn" and "green goo eater" style tags after the merges were successful. :0( -
Aww man! I think you should having a running feature where the weeks best post should get tagged purple unicorn (and maybe worst gets to be green goo eater?!). Mention it in the bird bath and then we can all hunt for it :) woop woop! -
lmao, that is a fun idea! -
purple unicorn is back in play. -
Did you feel like some sort of secret agent writing that? ....Red fox, do you have the package?! -
Found it! haha this is better than where's wally....sorry, that's waldo for you guys isn't it? But how is that this weeks best post Laura? it's not been active for a month! Lol, while i was searching I found one tagged "purple monkey dishwasher" which i quite enjoyed too :) -
whoa...i assume the one you found was this: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... which was NOT one I tagged today. Must have been one I forgot to delete... -
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
I sees it. hehe -
Aww, i fails! My bad, my bad :) I shall have to step up my game! -
WINNER!!! -
Inappropriate?I tagged my suggestions too and then felt somewhat inadequate compared to Murphy's! Still, nice to be able to keep track of these things. I might suggest to the GetSat crew that it would be useful to have a list of links to topics you posted on your dashboard rather than having to crawl through and find them.
-
Add some love to this if you're interested :) -
I have always wanted a way to see people's past topics in their dashboard. Right now they are mingled with replies people have made, and sometimes you have to do a lot of digging through them to find what you are looking for. I added love to that topic. -
ya me too! when tagging murphy's ideas i had to do a google site search for ''Murphy shared this idea'.. :-P No way i could of done that easier with GS's tools.. -
woop, Thor (he's called Thor..... =AWSM!) says it's coming :) -
Inappropriate?BTW I got sidetracked with all the witty banter, but Tim, regarding your idea to write a bug for every idea with 20 +1's, I like it, and think it's totally feasible. If anything that threshold may be a little high. Maybe 10 votes should be enough. I'll try to carve out some time to aggregate a list and file some bugs. In the meantime, if anybody wants to help, I think a great place to start is the Idea Kitchen. Just under half of those don't have a bug linked on their right. There are a few that have bug reports that just need to be looked up and linked in the thread (which adds them to the grid) but I think it's safe to say some of those top ideas aren't even represented in Bugzilla.
I’m thinking it's a lot of work but we can do it!
-
Inappropriate?Laura, is there a way we can link an Idea Kitchen item with a bug ourselves? When you say they just need to be linked to in the thread, do you mean we can just post a link to the bugzilla post to the GetSatisfaction topic and the idea kitchen will automatically recognize it?
-
yeppers, steve made it so it automatically picks it up in the GS post.. Hes a freakin magician! -
I just tested it by linking to the bug in the custom media topic and it showed up in the idea kitchen instantly... steve really is a magician, isn't it? -
wow, automagically? man's a legened. -
yeah, he's a genius, but it was MY idea...I was the Murphy to SteveL's brain. :-P -
Woot! Represent, y'all :) -
I wish there was a SteveL to my brain. :-P -
Inappropriate?Did I miss anything? Or has GetSatisfaction just been updated?
The list of topics now has the name of the last person that replied...
Excellent
I’m happy! At last :)
-
yeah, that's definitely new. Good times! -
Inappropriate?Yet another little thing to do for GetSatisfaction though: the time indication in "Last reply 1 hour ago by xxx" should be clickable and take you to the actual last answer. Just like on this page, by the way.
Laura, would you mind asking GS people to do that?
Thanks :)
-
I'll mention it to Amy next time we chat klint, but it wouldn't hurt to post an idea in Get Satisfaction's Get Satisfaction site. ;-) I did a quick search and it appears there isn't one open for it yet. -
Thanks for that idea, klint! I'll pass it along to the rest of my team. :) -
Woop, welcome to Songbird Amy! -
Thanks, Tim! :)
klint - you'll be happy to know your idea has been added to the queue. -
w00t! We <3 the Get Satisfaction team! -
fo sho! -
Inappropriate?Thanks a lot :)
-
Inappropriate?so does anyone know when 1.3.0 hits the streets? my google calendar told me it was monday...(yeah I subscribed, i'm that cool)
-
NEVER!
hah. ummm im guessing either tomorrow or next month.... -
well exactly. gah. Laura...? -
Next release we should start taking bets :P -
yeah we could run a pool! There could be some good money in that. Spesh if we can get some inside info - maybe if we cut the devs in... -
Inappropriate?Hey guys, I'm not avoiding you, well I'm sorta avoiding you (kidding!)...but I don't actually know yet. I am clearly not the insider that would improve your odds...
-
does anyone know or have any sort of ball park figures?
