The new Songbird 1.0 icon!
I just wanted to here peoples thoughts on the new icon for Songbird 1.0...
Much better than the headphones, kinda miss the original black and white bird though...
I wonder if the colors are gonna change throughout the website also?

Inappropriate? So first the positive point... I know how hard designing icons is... And this work indeed is professional and very well done...
BUT IT's NOT THE SONGBIRD... I miss the dark colors and a bit more of the style which was used for the birds on gthe website...
I HOPE REALLY THE DESIGN TEAM GETS A CHANCE TO PUSH IT MORE INTO A BLACK VERSION... they definetly do know what they're doing... just some more tweaking into the Black/BLUEish/White direction and it will be a not only a great icon... it will be a great SONGBIRD icon...
BTW... I am missing his legs too ;-)
BUt anyway... I am excited...
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?I hope that isn't the new icon...
No offense, but it's just so different form the original, which was no doubt the coolest. -
Inappropriate? Thanks Mike. More background on the new icon here: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
-
Inappropriate?i wonder what it would look like it a bluey green similar to the egg . its slowly going on me though
-
Inappropriate?I really prefer the original black Songbird, your icon is nice and all but it's not the Songbird, sorry.
-
Inappropriate?@Rob/Songbird: I agree with your points of being cute, warm, and attractive on all themes, But it just isn't consistent with the rest of Songbird, which I feel makes it worse/confusing.. I think its a very well designed bird, color and shape, but it just doesnt flow well..
I feel as if the icon should change (to a more black/blueish and white one)
OR
reflect the new icon colors into the app and website... As much as I love the black feel, it could use some color.
I just like CONSISTENCY!
yes...
yes...
hmmm...
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Mike -- exactly right.
It's the our intention to bring color, warmth and attractiveness to Songbird's feather and Web sites. Our next priority is the icon set within the Gonzo feather. -
Inappropriate? Thanks Rob! Great to here color is coming to Songbird! Thanks for all your hard work!
I’m intrigued
-
Inappropriate? That's a great icon. Quite better than this headset. When will it be available through auto update?
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Have to agree with all those who've come to love the original, black songbird. The songbird just *is* black, it feels like there is a ridiculous cutesy impostor in his place now. Please guys, can we have the real songbird back?
I’m unconvinced
-
Inappropriate?Truly I'm not a fan of the new songbird. Is it really impossible to work with the old songbird icon and color scheme to achieve the listed aims (color warmth 3d texture)? I was really hoping that the icon in the top left corner of the site would have become the icon, with some visual bells and whistles applied to it. What about giving this icon some color and texture?
This seems like a new mascot rather than a new icon, and if the old black songbird mascot is still in play, it's pretty really pollutes songbird's brand recognition. It feels like rebranding. Also, why orange?
I expect an addon to remedy this, but just as a user of the program I wish that the old mascot was still being used to promote it. Songbird's awesome design and that bird were what kept me using those buggy early releases. That and a strong aversion to itunes. And the awesome out of the box features. And it working with my Creative Zen Vision M. etc.
love the program, please change the icon back? -
Inappropriate?I use the minimize player add on and when it minimized, i was looking for the black icon and instead, i thought the new songbird icon was pikachu !?!?!?!
I’m joking
-
I thought the exact same thing when I saw the mini SB icon when I searched for it in my spotlight. -
Inappropriate? The slowly hatching egg in the 0.x releases was kind of awesome.
I really like the farting bird mascot, and I certainly wouldn't mind it as an app icon, but the 1.0 logo is adorable beyond words.
I feel though that if it isn't the fartbird, it should be imitating the style of the Firefox/Thunderbird/etc. logos?
-
Inappropriate?i like the old black bird better personally. i think to help with the brand recognition. there should be a more "Mozilla" style icon as well. such as maybe the old black bird wrapping its wings around a CD...or even a Record! similar to firefox around a world, Thunderbird around an envelope, and Sunbird around a calendar. i think that would help push the "firefox equivalent of itunes" branding. and considering how popular firefox is, if the icon looked similar to those icons, like they where all apart of the same family. i think it would be a big publicity booster.
I’m confident
-
I think someone read your comment because its been designed. Just follow the links:

Inappropriate? For the record, and because people are so frequently confused. We're not Mozilla. We're based on Mozilla technology, but we're our own thang. We love those guys, but we don't want to bite their style too bad, y'know?
-
ahh i get it. yea i had that confused. since the main push, at least from the public, seems to be to compare it to "firefox vs. internet explorer." i still think though that the black bird was much cooler. especialy the one with the headphones. its just the orange gets to me. i see "songbird" as a moodier darker color scheme (such as the dark aquas, blues, greens, blacks, greys) -
You win the thread. -
I have a window vista compatible .ico file if you want it. email me at: eightree (at) gmail (dot) com -
No thanks. I'm on a Mac. -
Love it! -
Inappropriate?Nice design, however.... It's too cutesy for the application and is not the Black Songbird icon that we have all come to know and love.
Please change the icon to something appropriate (such as the icon eighttree has proposed).
Thanks
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I think the black and white theme would be much appropriate and much much more...cool!
Please, consider a future change. Your mascot is cute, it likes people, use it.
I’m not agreed
-
Inappropriate?Feel free to take a gander at my Songbird picture collection, its all the images of the much loved bird mascot I've collected/searched for over the development of Songbird.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/8668110@...
(Don't be afraid of the ones with a black background, those are actually the transparent ones, flickr is just being silly. When you download the original size image it will be trasparent)
Remember that these are property of POTI and Songbird and made by jkoshi :) ...hopefully I didn't do anything illegal...;)
If you want to convert them any of them to an icon file just download Any to Icon or whatever you prefer :)
-
hey boosh -- the mascot illustrations are all at http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Docs/Son... -- please don't duplicate them all on your personal photostream as they are the copyright of POTI, Inc. I'll add to the Songbird team Flickr page when I have a moment so they can be favorited via Flickr too. http://www.flickr.com/photos/songbird... -
Inappropriate?I'm not fond of this icon, i don't like the strange perspective in it, and I think it's too much 2.0ish.
Maybe Songbird should think more about how it will look like in future years.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate? Why not have koshi making one of the black bird. It is so awesome but it's sad not to see him in my dock :`(
-
Inappropriate? My brother was looking over my shoulder, and said, "Why do mozilla apps have the coolest icons?", as he pointed to Firefox, Thunderbird, and Songbird. I was using the icon eightree has created. First I had to clear up that songbird wasn't a mozilla app, and then I had to admit sorrowfully that this was a third party icon.
This shows how well the black/white/flat bird stands up along with even Firefox, and in the eyes of someone who hasn't been acquainted with songbird and its mascot. -
Inappropriate?I love the new Icon because it uses happy colours makes me want to sing, Plus it looks good on my desktop
-
Inappropriate?Found this in DeviantArt. Is this designer involved in songbird?
I like the orange version of the black Tweeter.
http://tatice.deviantart.com/art/Audi...
-
Wow, that is a really great icon, the ideal color version of the classic bird. Just needs a bit more contrast in the beak and eyelids, but wow.
This should definitely replace the new icon... (And I'm a relatively new user -- I know Songbird with the current icon only.) -
Inappropriate?sad to say, but I really dislike the orange bird. and its not the color, its the style!
The orange bird with its erectness reminds me on an aspiring / grind choirboy, whereas the flat 2D black one is a cool dude, everyone would like to hang out with him.
I also don't understand, there is this much art/graphics with the black one in the blog and everywhere on getsongbird.com and then this icon???
I really hope you guys work this over...
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I'm sorry the new icon is hideous, i always change it to a custom icon as soon as I install it, I'm almost willing to compile it with a new icon..
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? To be completely honest, I was really disappointed when I first saw that they changed the icon, because for all the beta releases, it was just an egg with a crack in it, and I thought "I bet for 1.0 they're going to finally have the little black bird come out of its shell." Even though I'd seen the bird before, It was just kinda the big letdown for me (that and the lack of CD ripping...but that's on the way). It was the thing I was looking forward to most for the stable release (it may sound silly, I know).
I guess the thing that annoys me most is not the change of color, just how the bird is angled. It almost looks like the Songbird is flat, at least in the image that Michael originally posted. It just looks unnatural to me. Even one like icebearhugo posted would be better, in my opinion.
I dunno. I really liked the blackbird. It always made me laugh, to see all the little air puffs coming out of who knows where and such. I know I tend to prefer darker skins (er...feathers), but I just find the black bird so much better. But that's just my opinion.
I think that, if the developers really want to go with orangy (which I honestly hope they don't), they should at least get around to changing everything, cause it's pretty darn confusing to have all these black birds on the website, and then you download Songbird, and it's orange.
(Also, I know this thread is kinda dated, as we're already on to 1.1, but I thought I'd still voice my opinion, since the last post was only 6 days ago.)
I’m kinda sad
-
Not silly at all. I feel the exact same way, and I really hope they reconsider. -
If the devs wants to keep the orange icon, they should consider to rename the application from "Songbird" to "Goldfish". @=\(° v °)/ rules over >< °> -
atreiu, that's so true! And Goldfish doesn't sound near as musicy as Songbird. -
Inappropriate?I like the orange songbird; he might not have as much character as the black songbird, but I think the black songbird is too cartoon-like to fit in with the icons of most other programs. I think the artist of that icon posted on deviant art, linked to by icebearhugo, did an excellent job mixing the two. It would be neat if the guy who makes the other Mozilla icons made a Sonbird one one day.
-
Why does it even matter how it "fit[s] in with the icon[s] of most other programs?" Songbird can't afford to sink into pathetic conformity because being different is what drew people to it in the first place. An applications icon is one of the first things people see and its is used to advertise it. This whole new icon thing is just a case of multiple branding personality disorder and it isn't going to be effective, you might as well be distributing on OSS version of WMP-the king of all generic media players. -
Inappropriate?I really like the orange logo, would miss it a lot if you decide to go back to the bw style. It's not bad, and I understand why people look at it in a nostalgic way, but the new one is just tons better.
