This is what the Songbird official release icon should look like.
taken from Songbird's flickr profile:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/koshi/97...
This icon would be perfect. Way better than the headphones, and waaaaay better than that orange bird.
It accomplishes two things at once:
1. It's the original dark Bird, so all us fans will be happy.
2. The Bird is wearing headphones, making it clear that the application has at least something to do with music.
The only reason that the icon was switched to the headphones is because the previous icon (bird hatching, and assumably, eventually a hatched bird) didn't really define what Songbird was as an application. The headphones on the bird take care of that, while maintaining the visual flow that we've seen through the various beta versions of Songbird.
Let's say we did change the icon to the headphones, or the orange bird. Would that make any sense at all? One of the most previous icons depicted a black bird hatching from the egg. Why would it suddenly turn orange? And headphones have nothing to do with a bird. That little bird icon on the side of the headphones isn't cutting it.
If you agree with me, than click that "agree" button!
If that orange bird becomes the official icon of Songbird, I will seriously stop using Songbird.
However extreme that sounds.

Hey Dustin,
I'm sorry you don't like or feel misled wrt the updated app icon. The Songbird mascot bird will forever be in Songbird culture, on the Web site, bugzilla, wiki, etc.
Please see http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... for the full scoop.
Finally, if you don't like the app icon, it's easy to change it to the mascot bird. I expect we'll see an add-on for that shortly. =)

For those of you who were interested in my icon from earlier, I recolored it as a yellow bird (much easier to see at small sizes) and fixed the shading issues, as well as changed a few small details that were bugging me.
If you want to download the .ICO file, along with the .PSD and .AI files, get it here at http://talyma.deviantart.com/art/Song...
@DerrickL: I went with yellow because I didn't want it to look too similar to the Mozilla Thunderbird logo. If you want a blue Songbird, that would be easy for me (or anyone else, for that matter) to do by changing the color sliders in Illustrator.
@Carlos: I love the Koshi bird too! I spent an hour or two playing around in Illustrator trying to make a Koshi-style icon, but decided to go this direction instead. :-)
@Everyone: If anyone here knows a thing about extensions, I'd love one that allows you to change the icon for Songbird! As it is, I had to hack the .exe file to use this custom icon.

Now try and tell me this doesn't look cool.

There's no way I would take the goldfish over this.
Now that I think about it, Almost all applications these days have a splash of bright colors. Do we want to conform to the status quo? No! Do we want to try and fit in? Hell No! We want to stand out! And that's certainly what happens when I place that Pseudo Songbird on my dock. It draws my attention.
I want the Songbird icon to make my friends say, "Hey, what's that? It looks cool." and not "Aww, what a cute little orange bird! what application is that?" and especially not "Ew, is that a goldfish eating a worm? ... what's that got to do with a music player?"
The community has spoken. And the community says, "Bring back the Black!"

I would prefer a different icon too... I only have three icons on my desktop: Firefox, Thunderbird, and now, Songbird. One of those three just doesn't belong. I know that this project is entirely unrelated to Mozilla, but I just couldn't resist making an icon that fit in with their great icons.

I agree that when stripped of contrast and opacity it does look good... but here is how it will look when shrunk to fit the taskbar in Windows... not quite as nice. Now I admit I simply shrunk the .png you posted here, if it were shrunk using the original vector artwork it would probably look a bit better. On the other hand, if a version of the icon was created specifically for 16x16px (for taskbar and webpage favicon) with detail stripped out and contrast increased it would look better as well. But, as you can see, the default icon you posted isn't going to look very defined when shrunk so small IMHO.

Inappropriate? Is the new orange bird definitely going to be the new icon?
Or is it just one of the first takes?
It would be nice if you guys could post some .pngs of some alternate Songbird icons, in particular the one that appears in the picture above (if that's possible).
I’m feeling a bit better
-
Inappropriate?I'm sorry if i this is a stupid question, but what orange bird? I can't see that anywhere (or i'm color blind and i just found out!):-s
But i agree with you, it rather be a bird with a headphone.
There is a comment on the SB blog that says the headphone is just a placeholder, so i'm not concerned.
About the icon color, i think it's complicated.
I love the blackbird, but for the purpose of a windows taskbar icon, for instance, i guess it's too dark and gets easily camouflaged.
The solution could be puting the blackbird inside a very circle with a white background. I guess it would be fine though if the the bird's headphone was colored, like red or blue (just saying'...) or even if the bird was stylized (like 3d, wingless, only with the headphones, whistling, etc.)
I’m unsure
-
the orange bird is here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... -
Inappropriate?Concerning the Icon color:
a black icon on a black background does cause problems. I think the solution wouldn't be a solid white circle, but rather a sort of burst of white light behind the bird.

Inappropriate?I love Dustin Paluch's idea. Seeing as how the bird has always been the lovable, characterful pooting black bird, I think it should stay as such. I don't care if you rid of the poot for the icon, so long as the original bird stays. Songbird has already created a community and a name for itself. It's always been associated with the dark bird. I'll work on materializing Dustin Paluch's idea (though I'm sure lots of other people are working on icons too) and linking to it here (and elsewhere).
I’m frustrated
-
I'll be looking forward to what you come up with. -

Inappropriate? While i totally dig the classic songbird images Carlos K posted, I'm afraid that they are not going to minimize very well... Any smaller than they are now and they're going to lose recognizeability and definition. I think CassidyJames has the winner (for now) if it were cleaned up just a bit. It's nice and black like the old mascot, but with enough large details to stand out and some bright orange highlights to draw attention.
-
Inappropriate?I hate to be a critic, but I'm just not into the 3D bird. The old bird has a sorta indie, minimalist feel to me, this one seems a little cartoonish. It's eyes are really huge and it's throat looks stuffed, like there's an orange pillow in there....
I'm sorry!

Inappropriate?Yeah, you could do that, exactly as they've done with the new yellow/orange Songbird icon... but, look at all the major mozilla apps; firefox, thunderbird, sunbird, etc... all of them came up with an icon that looks great large and as small as 16x16. Cropping the icon is a cop out used for badly designed icons IMHO.

Inappropriate?I concur! I'm a happy Songbird convert. I could really care less if the icon is improved, just thought I'd put in my 2 cents.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?Hm, looking at the taskbar icon image suggests to me that maybe only a little tweaking is needed.
I'm thinking that if you rotate the image of the S'bird's head just a little so the beak is in profile; and then also the white headphones stand out in complete outline against the black, it would look great. The profile of the bird would uniquely be the Songbird bird, and the headphones would clearly be headphones and make it obvious it's a music program.
I don't know if I'm describing this very well though.... I could draw it in two seconds but I don't have a working graphics program right now! If not, I'll be visiting my folks in a few days, and they have a scanner, so I could upload a sketched image! :)
BTW Mr. Mayo, I think your little taskbar icon looks great, and the fact that it's B&W definitely gives it distinction.
I’m hopeful someone gets this and has a graphics program

Do you have a vector version? -
Sure, here you go: http://talyma.deviantart.com/art/Song... After looking at a bit, I'm thinking the bird would look better as all one color rather than black and yellow, or I should change the album to a different color. The black vinyl on the black feathers is hard to see at smaller sizes. -
This is very very very great :) -
That looks really cool! I'd back it completely if I didn't love koshi's icons so much and if the folks over at POTI don't want the old black icons they should totally go with yours -
I'm not the kind of person who really frets about icons, but this is about as good as it gets for Songbird, I think. It would be even better if the bird itself was blue maybe, to stand out a bit and I think that color would go well.
I'm not a huge fan of the black/white bird OR the cropped orange thing anyways. -
dear farrel I agree with your color Idea, but as a suggestion you could also leave the bird black and make the LP a CD -
Farrel, while good work in terms of detail, like you said, it 'fits in'.
I've commented already here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t...
Unsure how operating systems deal with icons, but of course the black bird could be perfectly invertible for different backgrounds.

I don't like the new bird...or windows. (No offense) Honestly the new bird is too...I don't know...peppy. There's just something not awesome about it. The icon should be, first of all, unique and, second of all, awesome. The new icon does neither. -

Although the company has no plans to do this I think this would be the best icon. It connects Songbird with other Mozilla Applications, has a bit yellow and black, so is a mix between the current icon and the black bird.
Just wow! ;) -
Inappropriate? Why not use more gray colors!?
@ farrel !? anyone wants your bird, sorry !
Lets focus on 3D form to the dark old bird with the haedphone (lets put some more gray colors on it )
The old bird can be light black with gray

Here is my comparison color

Thunderbird has a dark blue with normal blue and light blue color

Firefox has a red color with orange color and yellow color

Sunbird has a green color with light green color with "little" yellow color
I’m excited

Inappropriate?when i first came across songbird, i saw the elegant white logo at the top of the website and thought it was great. then i was disappointed that it wasnt the icon for the program itself.
so i recreated it in illustrator, and added a tiny bit. here's the result:

(i tried to add a gray background to that, but i dont think it worked. it's a white icon so it works best on dark wallpapers)
if you want to download here's the link: http://jasonrayner.com/downloads/song...
right now its just for mac (.icns) but u can download the .png and use it to make an .ico
-
That's a nice one too, and aside from the colors, I'd really like to know if OS's are able to either choose from a black or inverted icon or if they can apply the inversions themselves. -
Inappropriate?i put together some colored icons too, seeing as the white-ish one is pretty light.
