Updating metadata in Songbird doesn't update it in Windows
When I add a rating to a song, it gets updated in Songbird but not in Windows Explorer. This happened with Windows Vista and Windows 7 (I didn't test Windows XP). My music is stored on a FAT32 partition.

Hi Nabil
Yes, ratings are not saved to the file by default. But you can change that!
Open a new tab and type about:config.
Accept the dialog and search for "rating". There should be a key named "songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting". By double clicking on it, you can set it to "true".
Now you can close the tab, your ratings will now be safed.
BTW: One reason, why ratings are not saved by default is that if you share your music, other people have your rating in their library, although they would maybe rate it different.
Hope that helps!

For whatever reason, it didn't seem to work... :( -
Inappropriate? But you managed to change the preference?
If so, only the ratings you edit afterwards are safed. Those you saved previously are unfortunately not saved.

Inappropriate?no, not even the new ones work. I've re-checked the preference, it is saved, but it doesn't update the metadata in windows explorer. It works with everything else, though. I tried changing the name of the album, and it updated in Windows Explorer... Also, it looks like I'm not the only one with this problem... http://forum.codecall.net/c-c/10317-r...
I have another info, it seems that a lot of my songs have the "archive" attribute, and it doesn't seem I can change it (when I do and go back to the properties of the file, it still has a checkbox at archive) Could it be part of the problem?
Thanks for the help! -
Inappropriate? So with the new info, do you have any idea of what the problem might be?
Thanks again for the help! -
Inappropriate?Hmmm... Might be.
Does a rating appear in the explorer? If so, is it the same as in WMP?
I’m indifferent...

Inappropriate? This might be a problem with Windows... As Songbird writes metadata to ID3 V2.4... And the Windows Explorer display pane is not able to read album art from 2.4 tags.. So this might also apply to ratings... Could you check with an ID3 editor/viewer such as 'MP3 Tag' or 'Tag & Rename' to see if it is read there...
I’m .... I don't do ratings.... ;)

Inappropriate? It's not read there, but it seems like ratings are not standard in Mp3 tags, as they are in the extended fields, and even there there is two types of ratings, one called ratings_mm and another called rating_wmp. In both cases though the ratings weren't there. funnily enough, it seems like (is it by default?) all song are rated 3 stars out of 5 in windows media player.
-
Inappropriate? This is useless. The Ratings tag that songbird writes to is not the same ratings tag that any other software will look at. It's not the id3 standard tag, nor is it standard in any of the mp3 tagging software. For instance, mp3tag will see the tag is there, but it will not enable me to edit it, or more importantly, copy it to a useful tag location.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? It makes me wonder what the point of rating tracks is at all if you lose them the minute you change media player.
Why should I rate my tracks with Songbird when the ratings won't work the minute I decide to use another media player?
I think it's a way of stopping people from leaving. If you make it so it's impossible to export your data then you won't ever be able to leave.
I used to use MediaMonkey and would still be using it if they had a version for windows.
I spent days of my accumulated time rating tracks in MediaMonkey, not knowing that no other media player is able to read the ratings. I'm not going to waste my time rating tracks like that in Songbird.
I’m annoyed as hell
