Watch folder and performance problems on Mac!
I have problems using the "watch folder" feature. On my Mac, Songbird often freezes at startup, perhaps while searching for new files. But when I search for certain songs, that I put into my media folder, Songbird doesn't find it. This feature is really great, but it should work as expected and should not bring Songbird down on its knees performance wise. The occasional freezes for several seconds are only on my Mac (tried on 2 different installations, so it seems to not depend on my OSX installation). On Windows everything works fine.
Please sort this out!
P.S. I am on the latest stable build.

Inappropriate?G'day,
Firstly, what version of OSX are you using? Also, many people have stated that things get a bit dodgy when using files over the network. You aren't watching an airport drive are you?
Also, is your watched folder on a MSDOS/FAT32/Windows drive?
Just trying to get a full idea ;)

Inappropriate?Hi,
Yeah I realized I left some information out :) Sorry for that. I am on Leopard 10.5.6 and all my music is under my home folder, which is on my system drive.
The freeze occurs even after some time, and not only when launching Songbird. During the freeze, my whole system (not my mouse) freezes too and after 1 minute everything works fine again, except Songbird that starts stuttering for a while. I hope that was enough info. Thats for the freeze.. Songbird not adding certain songs is a complete other problem, that I cannot explain.
Hope this helps.. -
Inappropriate?Am I the only one having issues on Mac?

Inappropriate? No i'm in the same boat as you, the freezes does not happen though. But When i put new files into my watched folder nothing happens. Im running Mac OS X 10.5.7, and i have my music on a USB drive connected directly to my Mac.

I'm running Version: Songbird 1.2.0, Build 1146 (20090616030100) on Mac OSX 10.5.7 and have my music in my homedir ~/Music/ and adding new files to the watched folder sporadically works, not always... -
Hey... I have that problem to once in a while, but it helps is you go into preferences and then uncheck and check the checkbox under media-import after having had an unsuccesfil import. -
I've tried that and even unchecking it, restarting songbird, checking it and restarting songbird doesn't seem to get it to run... -
Inappropriate?G'day BJEagle and Iradraconis.
@BJEagle, your problem may be caused by the way OSX is designed potentially.. Songbird uses a special mechanism to update files in a Watched folder in realtime, but some operating systems don't support it on external drives or remote drives :(
There are plans though I believe to make it possible to watch every drive (by manually checking incompatible watched folders every so often, which is less efficient, but sometimes the only option). So that might be the reason you are having problems..
@Iradraconis. Not sure about the freezes. Because of Songbird's current design though, the interface and library operations seem to be on the same chain (thread), so if one slows down, the other stalls. However, Jackson 5 (due in August), will separate the library from the GUI, so at the very least, the GUI should no longer freeze up during searches and such.
1.2 also adds major enhancements that may help you with your performance issues (you could try the beta version, see if it helps with your probs):

If you use the beta though, I suggest you stay away from managed mode still ;)
Hope that helps,
Andrew
