Well, I do hate to say it that way... library management
Well, a few months ago I've made a thread talking about music collection problem. That is having a big part of my music collection being stored on external media (ext HDD or network shares)
The bottom line was that nobody really had an idea of how things could be managed to accept multiple source of medias in one collection.
A few days ago, I stumble on a music player (which totally lacks lots of songbirds cool features) that has what seems to be (from the tests I've made) a very interesting way to set things up.
You add to you collection the different folders, mp3 players, shares, cd or whatever and tell him to only show the part of the library that is actually available at the time you're using the player.
For me, that's a killer feature.
When I'm on the road, with my 3 Joe Satriani : I see that in my library, that's it.
When I'm at the office, or when I plug my external HDD : the songs and podcasts I have appear
and when I'm home (which doesn't happen that often in fact): I have my whole library on my network drivers showing in the player.
If needed I can supplie with the name of the software (which is GPL by the way), but i'd prefer not to advertise another player on songbird pages.
However, and I hate to put pressur on dev, podcast support is a major, key, super-needed, extra-important with top-emergency label, issue,
so guys, keep up
I know I'm not helping a lot, all I've got are ideas, but still...

Inappropriate?Hey,
thx for the input. I like this idea a lot.
I think all people who use songbird on their laptop on a lot of different locations would like this.
If some more people confirm they would like to see this, there's a good chance it gets picked up by the devs.
Btw, I don't think its a problem to put the name of the software here. Maybe people can get a better idea of what you mean. -
Inappropriate?OK
here's the soft, it's JAJUK www.jajuk.info
(moderators, wipe this if found inapropriate)
I may also add that it's working gret on windows but the sound output is sh**tty on macOS (probably due to java), however, library works great
I’m full of hopes (as always)

Inappropriate?I want to use the Bird!!!
but have same problem, also complained about it in the survey this morning and in another topic, where I made some suggestions.
I’m I'm full of hopes too, or am I a Fool of Hopes???

Inappropriate?agreed - and I think that the major hurdle of how to do this is already addressed. A networked drive shouldn't be handled any differently than an iPod or some other external media device.
as mobile as computers have become, it's highly important to have chunks of your library be available sometimes, and unavailable at other times, without causing a major hissy fit.
for example:
I've got an NFS/SMB/Mac share where the majority of my music is kept. I stream from there for networked devices, desktop systems, etc.
I've got a laptop on which I like to keep a chunk of music for when I'm working, or away, or whatever.
and I've got an iPod that I want to be able to manage, either from my laptop, or my desktop, or whatever - I want to keep particular playlists in sync from the NFS drive, but if that drive isn't available, just deal with it and let me manage the device.
the major key here is to be able to treat the NFS device as "just another device". Keep the Library as the local stuff on the system, but view the remote stuff as a USB/whatever that's available when it can be connected to and isn't when it's not.
Make sense?
I’m really really anxious to get this working!

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate?I like this idea too, but i went about it a different way: DLNA.
Its a shame this is still in its infancy stages becuase YOU would benefit from something like this. I made a recommendation to support and share media files using DLNA which pretty much does the same thing you describe but with a different method.
I hope in general they make access and sharing your media on a network/location/situation easier as well.
And I couldn't agree more, stuff like this makes a lot sense and brings alot to the competition table.
...but i would really kill to have some form of DLNA supported to access a NAS or remote laptop on my network. or be able to share my music library with songbird so i can play it on my TV (and the connected stereo) instead of something else.
I’m thinking great minds think alike
