What is Songbird?
I don't get it. What is Songbird, and what can it do. Is it just another media player?

Songbird plays the Media Web. Play MP3s without leaving the page. Songbird views Web pages as dynamic playlists to play, save, download or subscribe to.
Songbird plays your music too with all the features you’d expect in a desktop media player. Like Firefox, Songbird's features may be improved with user installed and contributed cross-platform extensions.
Soon, Web page authors will be able to publish playlists and transfer MP3s into Songbird to build digital music stores like eMusic, music subscription services like Yahoo! Music Unlimited, virtual jamming services like Ninjam, playlist sharing services like WebJay and more.

Inappropriate?Does songbird play video's from my iTunes/iPod? I'm sick of the fact that iTunes is crash happy, and I want to give up on it.
How large of a library does Songbird work with (mine is only about 20,000 tracks)?
Also, I have AirTunes speakers set up, are you planning on having those work in the future?
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Okay, can I setup a jukebox type of thing on the web and have it played by Songbird ??
Does Songbird work with any audio formats in addition to MP3, like the open source and superior Ogg and the lossless Flac ?
I am trying to figure out what it is about.
I am looking for a simple solution for web based audio, but to allow better, open source formats like Ogg and Flac.
I am an open source advocate and LOVE Firefox, openoffice.org, audio codecs like Ogg and Flac for compressed video, I love Divx and especially on my external DVD player.

I’m confused and silly

Songbird can play almost any audio/video format, including mp3, ogg, flac, mp4, and probably divx (i'm not sure on that one though) -
Inappropriate?I have to add one more thing.
I use a Cowon D2 as my portable multimedia player. Cowon can play a whole range of audio formats, besides MP3, like Ogg (far superior to MP3) and FLAC (losless), botjh are license free.
The audio is far, far, far, far superior than the Ipods can dream of. With 75 watss coming out of my little guy, it plays great plugged into higher level systems as well as my car stereo via the auxiliary port. Unlie an Ipod, I don't have to pump to volume up.
Please great Divx compressed video as well.
I am proud to say the I never have used iTUNES (overpriced, has the DSM virus and crappy quality and they artists get screwed).
I’m happy and excited

Inappropriate?I'm a contented Amarok user on Ubuntu but have followed Songbird development & want to know what would be the compelling reason for me to switch or add a new music player?
-
Inappropriate? So let's tighten up your message a bit. What is your point of difference to the general category of personal music software (use iTunes as the comparator)?
I’m indifferent

I try to explain you a bit how songbird behaves with playlists...
The Simple way: Each WebPage you open is scanned by songbird for specific media-items... Especially mp3s... If found, it creates an playlist for that specific webpage. I am sure this is what you already have seen on man y music blogs browsing with songbird.
The Advanced way:
The real power of Songbird is that the developers/mantainers of webpages can modify this playlist through the webpage-API. For example add extra buttons, define the album art, ask songbird which mp3's you are playing right now or even scan your library to provide you a customized set of mp3's you like. DONT BE SCARED... Scanning your library only works if you permit it!!!
There are a lot of options developers especially can play with. So back to your question, what this means a customer: First, Songbird does it best to let you enjoy any webpage containing music. I personally love the feature that i am able to jump to any position in a song without downloading it. I personally love it that Songbird also reads out the metadata of any song found in a webpage. But in the future we hope that more and more developers are taking the webpages further by using the Webpage API. In that moment every customer can enjoy the full power of Songbird which is already there, which is much greater than what you encounter by just browsing a webpage which doesnt make use of the API.
It's just a question of time and of the community... The more people use Songbird, the more developers will pay attention to its advanced features of the API and use them in there webpages. We just reached Version 1.0. So its obvious that we are at the very beginning of the experience!!!
Stay tuned ;)
I’m thankful, happy

Inappropriate?I still can't get if Songbird is also a new browser: can I use it as replacement for [my browser here]? Or it isn't designed for everyday use on all sites?
I’m undecided
-
I use the Songbird-Browser only for Media-Browsing: exploring Music on Websites and Blogs, discovering Youtube Videos of my Music, getting Info about Artists etc. Of course if I need some small Information very fast, and don't have a "real" browser open, I look that up in Songbird, too.
But for everything else, I need my Firefox (with it's extensions & bookmark system etc.). Songbird can never be a replacement for that.
That's just how I do it, but I'm sure this is pretty close to the intention of the Songbird-Devs. -
Inappropriate? No one's suggestion or comment is helpful. HOW DO I DOWNLOAD FROM THIS SITE?
I’m more confused than ever
-
This is the customer service site for songbird. You can download songbird from our main site, which qways posted below. -
Actually liz has a point here, there is NO apparent link to get to the Songbird website on getsatifaction. -
I guess the Get Satisfaction people assume that you've already seen the company's homepage. -
I'm with you liz, I can't seem to find a way to download music onto this site. Nor can I pull up any artist, genre, or anything else. It appears that you have to have a different source to download from to download to songbird. I am not happy with nor satisfied with the songbird site. -
Inappropriate? No one can tell you what Songbird is, you have to experience it for yourself...
Sorry, couldn't help myself.
I’m being silly

Inappropriate?Songbird is great, better than crapple ifunes without bonjour trojans or quicktime usless software, thanks for this great work!!!....
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?I have Rhapsody. Tell me if Song bird would be better or can I use than together.
