What's the relation between Songbird and Mozilla? Where do you get your money from?
Title says it all: I don't get the relation between Mozilla and Songbird! For example, Songbird is not listed on https://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases , but the songbirdnest tells me "powered by mozilla". Sorry, if this question is daft, I'm not even sure what Mozilla or Songbird is at all. Are they companies, making money with opensource? Like Suse Linux oder Redhat? Where do you Songbird-devs get the money for the developing, your appartment etc.?
I'm just curious, it would be nice, if someone could give me answer in a simple way, so i can understand it :-)

Songbird is Mozilla-based.
Open Source is not a formal business scheme. It involves giving up certain rights, but in turn opening your ideas up to the community - in the case of software, it usually means that anybody can view your source code, and recode it for whatever reason, so long as they let you know what they are doing. So, if you want Songbird to support the iPhone, you can open the code, and rewrite it so it supports the iPhone, and just send it back to the people who make Songbird, so that they can use your code, and make it better.
Sadly, this usually means that the company can't sell the product, or advertise with it. A lot of open source software, such as Linux, makes money based on selling customer support (RedHat), but the vast majority of money powering open source culture comes from donations.
The developers of Songbird, Firefox, Open Office, and other Open Source softwares are not rich people - at least, they don't get much money for the code they contribute. However, it still gets done, because society at large is willing to help get it done. And it's better because of it.
You can learn more about Open Source at CreativeCommons.org, or, of course, on Wikipedia. -
Inappropriate? Thanks for your answer, Hakimi, i think i did understand the opensource thing and the relation to Mozilla, now. :-)
What I still don't understand is, where do Songbird gets its money from? I believe you, that you are no rich guys, but bills have to be paid somehow.
* You are developing for over a year now.
* Using Songbird is for free and will stay free forever
* Songbird doesn't earn something with support
* I can't find any sponsors or even ads on your webpage
* I haven't seen any call for donations or something like that since i follow songbird (~ v0.6)
Where do you get your money from? Or at least, if you are still on credits, where are you planning to earn money? Or is this a companies secret?
I’m thankful

Hey Mickey, if you are still curious, there is more info on this topic here: http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... -
Inappropriate?I think they earn money in 3 ways:
1. This is from their about page:
Songbird's core development is generously supported by Sequoia Capital, Atlas Venture and a small group of angels.
2. Their collaboration with 7digital (which is integrated in Songbird by default)
3. A little from their store.
