Where is "rating" information stored?
Where are the ratings stored? If I clear my library and reload it, will they be gone?

Inappropriate?Ratings are now stored as metadata in your media files. If you clear your library, your ratings will still be there for you when you re-scan them back in.

That's perfect, though I lost the ones I had (probably because they were iTunes imports). I love it, Keep up the madskills. -
Inappropriate?I cleared my messy Songbird library. Scanned for media again. The songs that were rated before, are now unrated. WTF!! If these ratings are stored as metadata, why would this happen?? *Sigh* What a waste of time.
I’m pissed
-
Inappropriate?Same here... Have done this with the nightly's since about 1 Week now. Never are the ratings part of the complete fresh start and rescanning.
Something with the Metadata and writing to it wrong? Because they are there after closing and restarting the app. But when you rescan your library, they're gone. -
Inappropriate?Well I think in most programs the ratings are stored, not in the files themselves, but in a saved library of sorts (maybe xml or some thing like that). In my past experience, I've never even seen an ID3 field for ratings. I don't know where the devs went wrong and this might be a dumb suggestion but couldn't we hijack another rarly used tag to get this up and running?
In hindsight, exporting/saving my library would have been smart. but I was misled (unintentionally I'm positive) and lost everything.
I just thought of something, would ratings in the ID3s be an obstacle to syncing that sort of info with devices?
I’m starting from scratch...

Inappropriate?Koshi, it is true that we support writing ratings, but it was decided that we should disable that functionality by default. I think the logic was that most people don't expect/want their files to be modified.
If you want though you can enable rating writes by going to "about:config" in the browser and changing "songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting" to true

Okay, I understand this well, however that's clearly not the way to deal with this kind of problems. Users don't want to lose the important metadata under any circumstances. If you can't provide a better solution to help moving libraries (or parts of libraries) from one machine to another one, it's a bad thing. -
Inappropriate?Would be a nice option to put some place, without having to scribble around in about:conifg. That's just too much to ask of many users. An options panel about general media behavior perhaps in the preferences.
But thanks for the info. Nice.
I think I have to study about:config thoroughly again, to see, what else you have hidden ;-) -
Inappropriate?Well I've had the about:config setting set to true for a while now, and I can confirm that songbird 0.6 does something to the file when you rate it, but I can't see a rating in the metadata, nor does Songbird pick it up when you re-import the file...
Are only certain type of file or tag formats supported?
-
Ditto. And same result on the newest nightly release. What exactly is it writing to in the file? -
Inappropriate?Looks like a bug to me, I don't see ratings on my newly imported library.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Soooooo... how does one even file a bug? Has it been done? Are there release notes for the nightly builds? Who should I ask? Are they single?

Inappropriate?I have a problem somehow similiar to the one being discussed here. I've been using MediaMonkey as my player and I used it to rate all my mp3, however these ratings don’t apear in songbird. This is quite annoying for me as it means all the "work" I've done with MediaMonkey is "lost" on Songbird. I can only hope this situation is solved in future releases, elsewhat I cannot adopt Songbird as my player.
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? The developers are unsure they want ratings to be stored in the file itself. The reasons vary. "iTunes doesn't do it"... well screw iTunes. I know some people may not want their ratings stored in the file, but that's the point of the "songbird.metadata.ratings.enableWriting" OPTION in "about:config". All we need is for this to work if the option is set to TRUE. It's just a bug guys, don't give up please!!
I’m sad

seconded! I want this too. And as developement goes and fresh nightly testing for me. I don't want to loose those ratings, everytime I delete my songbird profile or transfer my files to another PC, like say my Laptop. -
I couldn't say it better. Please listen to what Heidelbaer and Tylerstyle are saying. -
Inappropriate?I would really like to have that option easier accesssible. It is a nice feature. I really hate to do that again and again whenever i erease and reload my library.

Inappropriate? Can people head over to http://bugzilla.songbirdnest.com/show... and comment there? Might get us a bit more attention...
-
Inappropriate? We're in the middle of planning for the next release right now, and are definitely considering this problem.
The best (and most hilarious) way to push for this is to log in to irc.mozilla.org#songbird and spam 'pvh' -
Inappropriate?I spend two days rating my files... after having lost all the rating from musicmatch then from WMP, having understood that Songbird was correcting directly metadata. Then I reload my librairy since wmp was able to retrieve automatically album information and songbird still not... and lost all my ratings. No way to fix it ?
arrgggggggggggggggggl and just discovered that all my playlist have vanished to !!! give us back musicmatch for vista -
Inappropriate?arrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggg bis : it seems that there is noway to access or save songbird database ?
