Why can I play M4P files but not M4A,even with QuickTime and QuickTime Playback both installed?
I am using Songbird 1.0 on Windows XP. I have QTLite installed, and have the QuickTime Playback plugin installed. M4P files (i.e. FairPlay protected from the Apple Store) will play, but M4A files (i.e. unprotected AAC files) will not. I've tried using both QuickTime and QTLite, and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling both. None of the existing items on here seem to have a fix. Does one exist?

Inappropriate?Wow. That sounds completely backwards from my experience. I get error messages if I try and play .m4ps, but the .m4ps I upgraded via iTunes to .m4as work just fine. I don't know what to tell you.

Inappropriate?Okay, well could you at least clarify some things for me? Exactly what formats require what normally? Do both require QuickTime? Do either of them require iTunes as well? Do you need the QuickTime Playback add-on for just FairPlay DRM songs, or do you need it for both?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Well, it looks like I fixed it. I'm not sure what part of the process actually solved the problem, so here's all the steps I took. Maybe you guys can figure out what went wrong - or if someone else has the problem later on, maybe this will help them fix it.
I thought it might have been something that went wrong with my install, or some kind of add-on conflict, so I went to the Profile Manager and deleted the default profile. I went through the setup again, unchecked every recommended extension this time (I had them all checked the first time), and imported my songs by scanning folders instead of directly importing the iTunes library. Once the songs were imported, M4A playback worked without any problems, but M4P gave me a core error (as expected). I installed QuickTime Playback, restarted songbird, and managed to play one of every file type.
My first guess as to what actually happened would be a profile that was corrupted somehow, but it could also be a problem with an add-on. I'll be adding them and testing one at a time just to be safe - if it turns out to be an add-on, I'll update this.
I’m content and self-satistfied.

Inappropriate?Ah HA!!! Found it. The "Game Music" add-on was the culprit. Strangely enough, though, disabling it didn't fix the issue - I had to completely uninstall it.
I’m happy
