Why can't I customize my display panes???
Hello,
I am haveing a problem customizing my display panes in songbird 1.1.2. I used to be able to choose what I wanted displayed in which pane, but now I am unable to do so,. For example, the left display pane only allows album art and last.fm album art, I cannot see any other options. I used to be able to display music recommendations in this pane. Also I am unable to resize it. My bottom pane used to have lyric master, but now it does not, with lyric master instead in the right pane. Is there any way that I can get this changed or "Fixed"??
Thanks.

@Kazemizuhi:
As a workaround, you can use the Pane Button Addon, to extend some of the pane-functions (for example you _can_ collapse the main left pane with this)
http://addons.songbirdnest.com/addon/...
@Dauven:
You can ask the developer of the specific add-on (here "Now Playing"). He can enable "now playing" for the bottom service pane, too. Just let him know on the add-on page, that you would like that option. :-)

Inappropriate?Probably the addons aren't updated for 1.1.2 (every addon has to set a max version on which they can be installed).
Check the compatability of your addons and see if there are updates for the outdated ones, if not, you'll have to wait a couple of days till the addon author makes an update.

Inappropriate?All My addons are compatible. What he means is that, for instance, I want to be able to display the 'Now Playing' display pane on the bottom left, but it is not a selectable option on anything but the far right pane. All three panes should allow you to select any addon, not just what people feel is 'natural'.
-
Inappropriate?And the main left pane cannot be collapsed. Since this is supposed to be an extensible player, limiting users in this way is somewhat regressive.
-
you can hide the left pane by clicking a small icon at the left-bottom corner of the main interface -

Thanks. I suppose one could also just edit the extension directly if one knew which file specified the usable panes? -
@kazemizuhi: install.rdf inside the extensions folder. Look for the line '<songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>sidebar;contentpane</songbird:suggestedcontentgroups>' and make sure that 'contentpane' is in there to enable the bottom pane for that addon :-) -
Inappropriate?Hi all. I managed to (hopefully) fix this, with my workaround using the now playing list in the bottom left as an example. Simply go into about:config and modify the value for :
songbird.displayPanes.displaypane_servicepane_bottom.lastURL;
which by default is set to:
chrome://albumart/content/albumArtPane.xul
(or the last.fm album art)
Change this value to:
chrome://nowplaying/content/xul/nowplaying.xul
(you may need to hide and then unhide the pane for it to take effect).
Hopefully this should work for other addons with other panes, however keep in mind that an addon update may change it back, or that the addon may not be designed to work in a particular pane.

um. feeeling hopeful here: what is about:config, and how do i "go into" it?
thanks! -
about:config is the page that has the list of all the settings to edit, add or delete. You can access it by opening a new tab and using 'about:config' as the address. Be carefull if you make any changes. -
Inappropriate?I think this question basically still isn't answered. There's supposedly a work-around with the Pane Button Add-on, but I don't see any options in there for changing *which* add-ons can be selected in which panes. You still don't have that option anymore.
Has anyone found a fix that works for all add-ons? Is this question answered somewhere else?
I’m dangling still

To summarise my understanding of the problem: In the past, Songbird let you put any add-on in any pane, if you had lots of add-ons, this could make the menu messy, and some add-ons only make sense in certain places. Therefore, now, add-on authors must specify explicitly which panes they would like you to be able to use (like they should have done in the first place, but perhaps didn't).
So, there are "workarounds", but there will not be a "fix" for this, except for you to bug the add-on author to allow you to put it in the display pane you want (like they should have done when they first wrote the add-on, but perhaps didn't).
If you wan't to change *which* add-ons can be selected in *which* panes, without bugging the author (perhaps he has forgotten to check his add-on pages?), then look in your %appdata%\Songbird2\blahblah\extensions folder (different location if you are on linux/mac), find a file called install.rdf under each extension, and then hack it up (more info on the songbird wiki: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Develope....rdf , or look at other extensions for examples). -
Inappropriate?I only see one or two random add-ons in the drop down window in each of the three display/service pane, and these add-ons can not be moved to a different display pane.
For example, I have lyric master and mash tape, which are meant to be viewed in the display panes: but I can't get them into the display/service pane I want them in. Lyric master only shows on the right display pane, and mash tape only shows on the bottom. If I want to switch their locations, (which I do) I can't.
Also some of my add-ons just don't show up at all. In fact, most of them don't. They have vanished mysteriously, maybe they are hiking the Appalachian trail. (Yes, I know not all add-ons work in the display panes, like focus track. But I should be able to see the ones that do.)
In previous versions I *was* able to access my *entire* list of add-ons in each service/display pane, and use them where I chose. So you see, now I am spoiled. Songbird, you can't offer me candy and then take it away, that's not nice.
I am not a programmer and I do not know how to configure this, but I'm sure there must be a way, since it has been done before in previous versions. Thanks all for any feedback/help you have!
P.s. The Pane button add-on is neat but does not solve problem- no features for this.

How the heck can I get drop-down add-ons into the desired display pane??!.

@ Necimal
so, would i be correct in understanding that in the latest version of songbird if i want an add-on to show in a pane that it is not listed for, i have to go to the individual creator to request it? because that's a lot of running around: you'd have to do it basically for all the add-ons, and then wait.
if so, respectfully, i disagree. i think that makes it a broader songbird issue, not one for individual add-on creators to deal with, since they may not have even been aware of the change in this version of songbird in the first place, when they updated their add-ons for this version
