Why doesn't Songbird play unprotected .WMA files in OS X?
I am unable to add DRM-free .wma files to Songbird in OS X 10.5. Aside from converting the files to .mp3 what can I do to resolve this?

Inappropriate?Hi Kaine,
I want to confirm exactly the problem you are having. If you are simply unable to PLAY .wma files in Songbird, then this is an issue that we are already aware of (you can see the bug report here). Currently, Songbird requires the 3rd party plugin Flip4Mac to play .wma files on a Mac. If, however, you are unable to ADD the .wma files to your library, then this is potentially a new issue to be dealt with.
So, if you could please confirm:
a) if you are unable to add .wma files, or simply unable to play them; and
b) if this happens with all .wma files, or only with DRM-free ones.
Thanks. -
Inappropriate?Thanks for your response, Laura.
I am unable to add ANY .wma file to the Songbird library nor am I able to play any of my .wma files by opening them.
I do have Flip4Mac installed, but I am unsure if it is "configured" for Songbird.
VLC plays the .wma files ok, so I know Mac is capable of playing the files.

Inappropriate?I am having issues with wma on osx as well. I can add them to the library, but when I double click on it, the edit text box will appear as if I am editing the metadata. The files play ok with Flip4Mac however.

Inappropriate? It would be nice if s.o. could write a "step by step" to do list for this problem. Cause it seems to me that this isn't really a complicatet problem if would know what i have to do.
I’m frustrated, too.

Inappropriate? To jump on the bandwagon, I am also suffering from the same issue.
I have come across this site; http://www.ubuntugeek.com/working-wit... but I am completely new to OS X, so it means absolutely nothing to me!!!
Tried following the instructions and failed soon after opening terminal!
Also, I cannot even add the .WMA files.
Cheers -
Inappropriate?Ok guys, I checked with a colleague and this does indeed all fall under known issue bug # 11612 referenced above.
In testing we see the files are added but as it's not readable none of the metadata or other file info comes through.
I’m sorry I don't have better news.

Inappropriate?yeah ive got the problem as well and im running osx10.5.5 and songbird 1. is there any new news on the issue?
-
Inappropriate? The fact that the new version of songbird does not support WMA any more must have been know to developers. WMA support is not a hidden issue. It's one of the basics to check on before a new version is launched. I really don't appreciate to get "bigheaded" announce mails of new versions that just won't tell that the new songbird does not support WMA on a Mac any more. I had to go back to 0.6. This version does support WMA. So, next time play fair and tell songbird users what to expect! Some people don't have time to install and deinstall versions all the time just for fun!

Inappropriate? The bug was closed as WontFix so right now it's not on the map. You can always hop into the bug to try and drum up more support and get it reopened, but that's the best advice I have for you right now.
To track the comments on this work item:
1. Go to the "people" box in the upper right hand corner of bug # 11612;
2. Add your email in the "add cc" box;

I’m the bearer of bad news...

Lame as shit! There are no, I repeat, NO media library/players for OS X that support WMA. This is unbelievable, now I remember why I avoided OS X for so long; it feels like I am always settling for the lesser option. I guess I am just going to have ato learn a little Objective C and show these idiots how to do something right. -
Inappropriate?Daniel, do some research before ranting. iTunes can handle .wma, as well as VLC, MPlayer OSX, QuickTime with Flip4Mac, and WMP for Mac. For the latter two, check http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products...
-
Um... are you an idiot too? iTunes on OS X absolutely does not play nor manage WMA files in the library. You didnt even pretend to understand my comment. VLC is not a media library manager. It only plays files just as all of the other examples you have listed. Please read carefully before you show your ignorance to the entire 20 people following this post. I mean seriously! Who's the one that needs to do research again? -
Right! iTunes cannot handle .wma !!! Never could! However, there is program with a built in library manager that works on Mac Snow Leopard: Jajuk (open source). It's great! It's free! Give it a try! -
So I misread your post. Sorry 'bout that. But man, you really should see a doctor and have your blood pressure checked.. -
Agreed. @ Daniel and Phyr, I love your passion and understand your frustration but please refrain from directing it at other users or I'll have to remove your posts which I'd really rather not do. -
Inappropriate?Take Jajuk!
FREE, plays all formats, including WMA, built in library manager (like iTunes or Windows Media Player), playlists, search criteria. It's very powerful and neat!
