Album artwork provided by iTunes is encrypted in a proprietary format and stored in a location that is not obviously associated with the actual media item.
Additionally, iTunes does not embed artwork into the media item.
If you download media from the iTunes store (or fetch album artwork using iTunes) then 3rd party applications will have trouble importing the album art unless the user takes additional steps to embed these images into their media.
If album artwork is embedded in the media item then Songbird will successfully read and display it.
If you want to embed artwork from iTunes into your media these 3rd party tools can assist you with that (note: we haven't tested them):
For Mac iTunes users
There is a 3rd party Apple Script called "Embeded Artwork"
For Windows users
There is a script called "itunes_insert_artwork"
In Short:
If you want Songbird to properly display album artwork originally downloaded using iTunes we suggest you embed the artwork into your media before importing them into Songbird. If you have already imported your media, we suggest you try using one of these tools, then delete your Songbird profile, and re-launch and re-import your media.
In the future, we'll provide a mechanism to fetch album artwork from the web. And, we'll continue to explore ways to improve this experience.

Inappropriate?iTunes & iTouch artwork is what makes those products special. If Dongbird cannot do artwork automatically it won't win over many iTunes customers, its target audience!
I’m frustrated

thanks, for the update! -

Inappropriate?I'm also having the problem with some of my album art not showing up in Songbird. However, ever album folder contains a folder.jpg for album art. The albums that aren't showing up *might* also have had the iTunes style artwork downloaded (I don't remember which ones were done in what way in iTunes). Every other program I've used picks up the folder.jpg fine without being confused by whatever other options may be available. This sounds like a bug to me.

Hmmm...I just ran into an album not showing artwork that I know I have not yet touched in iTunes. I'm pretty sure I haven't even run iTunes since I ripped this album. Songbird still isn't picking up the folder.jpg. -
Inappropriate?I get how this affects importing artwork into Songbird, but why wont the artwork show now on my Ipod? Songbird broke it.
I’m pissed

BW, Songbird currently does not support syncing artwork to the iPod.. Apple stores artwork in there own encrypted .itl files, so they make it difficult(it doesnt matter if it is embedded or not) ;) -
Inappropriate?boosh, i had hundreds of albums with working artwork in Coverflow on my iPod.
I installed Songbird and Mediaflow, imported 3 albums with artwork then added those to my iPod.
After disconnecting and checking Coverflow, most artwork was gone. Those that remained were mismatched.
Reconnected to iTunes and it shows all the artworks as they should be. Tried readding some to see what would happen but Coverflow remained unchanged.
Do you know of any way to fix Coverflow? -
If you want coverflow on your iPod to be back to normal, you need to re-sync with iTunes. And if you want the artwork(coverflow) to remain on there, your best bet is to use iTunes as your iPod manager and disabling the iPod device support add-on until Songbird supports album art syncing... It is a very popular feature request, and there's a lot more that goes along with that... -
Inappropriate?thanks but re-syncing didnt help
-
Inappropriate?OK this just worked for me:
-------------------------------
If your iPod is set to update automatically give this a try , it often sorts out wrong artwork problems:
1. Connect your iPod
2. Disable "Display album artwork" in iPod>Music tab and click Apply.
3. Syncronise the iPod with iTunes (Right click on the iPod icon and choose Sync from the menu)
4. Re-enable "Display album artwork" in iPod>Music tab and click Apply.
5. Syncronise the iPod again.
