USB mass storage MP3 player Support
Why isn't this a higher priority? It would greatly improve compatibility with Creative players, Chinese MP4 players of all kinds (e.g. Cowon), and SanDisk Sansa players like mine (which can use USB mass storage mode on OS's where MTP isn't available).
An old plugin for this feature exists in the Add-on database but was never updated past Songbird 0.6. How hard would it be to just update the thing?
Songbird is supposed to be an inclusive, open-source program, not just another proprietary iPod accessory, right? :)

This feature is planned in Songbird 1.2 (codename Isan)

Inappropriate?I know, it's sad, that it isn't in there already.
I can only say, that it will come.
When you ask? I can't answer that. It's a hefty feature, that will require much code work and not an easy task, to satisfy the many different devices out there.
Again. It is on our radar and will come.
The more people that voice this opinion here, the sooner it will come.
Bare with us.
Tyler out! -
Let me also voice this opinion to keep this on your radar, then: USB Mass Storage support should be your first priority, and should be targeted at your next release. As a long-time fly-on-the-wall watching Songbird support, I think only more robust handling of album art during iPod sync comes close to as important a goal.
Nailing UMS puts Songbird on the map for Android devices, Sansa devices, Rockbox, etc. Pretty much everything that is outside of the iPod eco-system is increasingly based on UMS, and in my unsolicited opinion, Songbird will do best by first becoming the player of choice for those outside the Apple iTunes/iPod eco-system.
(Despite GeekShadow's post of a month ago, it doesn't look like it's on the plate for Isan.) -

Inappropriate?thats a start since i was fed up with having to use the wma/mtp plugins so i removed songbird mostly because i needed some more space on my hdd until i feel like backing up my files to reinstall my OS

Inappropriate?Actually, i think songbird could become the player in the mind of all people by simply adding 2 features that may come together, the main problem in add mp3 player, mp4 players support, is that you are thinking on use of sync functions, and other things like that(It seems to me).
But the answer for that is quite simple, add and explorer mode for songbird, because this way it would permit accessing mp3 and lots of other kind of usb devices, and plus woud make the usage of it much easier, lot bether.
Take a look at Media Monkey player, i do actually use him only because of that thing, and the capacity to send files to be converted or copied.
Things like, explorer, organizing. coding, or recoding mp3(mainly), is one of the main problems, or better saying, needs of songbird.
Sorry my bad english, I'm from Brazil.

One can easily view the files of a USB storage device in a file navigator/manager (Windows Explorer, Thunar, etc.). One workaround is to create a separate mount point for your specific USB device and add that folder to the list of folders to/from which Songbird should export/import. Not exactly an ideal solution. I have a rough idea of how it's done in Linux (by reading multiple tutorials for similar tasks), but good luck finding a tutorial for Windows or Mac. Even in Linux, you'd need administrator privileges to pull it off. Should that be necessary for someone who just wants an easier way to manage their music? I think not
Many standard media players have an option of syncing to USB devices. My phone has a media player built in (SE W series). I know I can simply use a file manager, but I'd like to be able to manage the music on my phone from my media player software.
I do realize that the iPod is the most popular media player around. I agree that improving iPod support should be a major focus for Songbird, seeing as how that's related to the main advertising.
I also realize that a lot of people can't afford iPods or iPhones and go with an USB device instead of a MTP device so that they can have better cross-platform support with a larger number of media players.
I'm iffy about using beta versions of most software so I'm just going to wait for 1.2 and hope for the best.

why is the old addon not being updated? I wouldn't care if the feature isn't in the core.
I’m hopefully.
-
afaik, it wasn't updated because after a songbird update it would have to be rewritten completely, plus it always was working "Windows only", which is sad for such an important function. I hope too, that this will be reimplemented soon. I would even prefer it as an add-on, but I wouldn't care much, if it would be in the core. -
I made a simple sync tool to help myself, maybe one day it will be like the old USB-Mass-Storage Addon or the old Add-On will be updated... It has (but I didn't tested it) support for linux, too.

the sync tool of rsjt...fg is a good workaround if you really want to get files to another device. -
Inappropriate?I want this too!
Why can't songbird just dump selected files into a specified folder? This would solve 90% of my issues. my el-cheapo Chinese player takes mp3 flies as a thumb drive, but then plays them, so you don't actually need to support the player, just a file transfer. Also, my stereo plays mp3s off a thumb drive, so all I really need is a simple ability to highlight flies in my library and send them to another drive. But what is really nice would be to re-encode those files to a specified bit rate (low for my mp3 player, high for the stereo's thumb drive). Realplayer does this quite well, and I'm still enduring it's adds for this functionality. If Songbird is going got do this, then I can wait patiently, otherwise I will wait impatiently.
I’m waiting...

Inappropriate?Maybe someone with Mac coding experience can help get rsjtdrjgfuzkfg’s add-on working for those of us who want to sync non-iPod devices with our Macs. It's a great start, it just doesn't work yet for me.

Inappropriate?+1 here, I see it as a real necessity for viable cross-platform music software. As much as I love Songbird and everything it brings to the table as a music library/player, for me it's crippled by it's lack of (Linux/Mac) support for USB (MSC) and MTP.
With DRM-Free music store being offered by 7digital integration, this makes for a competitor to iTunes. It will only become a real contender when the masses of people without iPods can be linked by one piece of software, which this integration can supply. It's nice to be able to organise and enhance your music library and experience with Songbird, but without being able to transfer this to a portable device is a huge gap. Once plugged, I think the adoption rates would rocket, including me.
Just to add, the number of non-Apple players will rise a lot over the next year especially due to the sheer amount of mp3 player replacing mobile phones hitting the markets.
I’m hopeful
