Why was watch-folders punted for the next release of Songbird?
First off... Songbird is awesome! It's now my default media player. The Ipod support is adequate and the media player is great and the integrated browser and add-ons are amazing! And it's got a great community with great devs which makes you feel like the project is actually making progress and you are going somewhere with it.
But my question:
Why was watch-folders punted for the next release of Songbird?
That is one feature I was really looking forward to. Just a question.

Inappropriate? As you know, there are a lot of features being requested for Songbird. Unfortunately there are limits to how many times I can ask our engineering team to work weekends and nights, as such, we have to make difficult choices everyday on what to work on, and what to punt. I've personally been on a crusade to get Watch Folders back in, but alas it was not to be for 0.6. The good news is that they are definitely coming back in 0.7, so keep an eye out for the next release, should be about 2 months.

Inappropriate?nice! i thought the road map said it was punted for 0.7 but i must have misunderstood
cool stuff.
speaking of devs working nights and weekends... is this a closed group or can anyone join? I've been meaning to look into it and see if i could contribute but haven't had time but i might have free time in the school year.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Hey Godsrock37 - we'd love some more help! In fact we started an sb_core program to try and coordinate developers working on the core Songbird player code. Check out:

for more info!
I’m hopeful about getting more community developers

Inappropriate?... but "Watch folders" are still marked as "Punted" for Fugazi on the roadmap: http://wiki.songbirdnest.com/Roadmap
Is it the roadmap that should be corrected, or myself? :)
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?ya thats actually what made me post here in the first place. i thought Koshi was trying to say the roadmap was incorrect...
Stevel - that sounds awesome. I'm looking forward to helping. I can't at the moment because in the summer i work a million jobs but I'm planning on putting some time in late august/early september -
Inappropriate?m-s, Godsrock37, I'll follow up with why this was punted and post back what I find.

Inappropriate? We understand watch folders are a highly requested feature and we fully intend to implement them in Songbird!
When we finished engineering planning for the next release and looked at the amount of work we have to do we realized we couldn't commit to implementing all of the Watch Folders components during the next releases timeframe. Unfortunately, we pretty much had no choice but to punt this feature for now. The good news is we will attempt to implement a native file system notifier API during this release so we are planning to lay some critical groundwork for this feature.
While the remaining work for implementing Watch Folders isn't currently scheduled we're hoping to land the feature either as an add-on sometime after this release or one to two releases out from now. When we have a more definitive date for this I'll be sure to update the Roadmap and this thread. -
Inappropriate?thanks for all the responses, this is why I love songbird. I'm already looking forward to the next release and greatly enjoying this one.
I'll be looking forward to any news and updates
I’m confident

Inappropriate? In the meantime, I am thankful that I can at least re-import the same folder manually any time I know there's something new in it and not get bogged down in duplicates (like iTunes the last time I checked). I'm looking forward to watch folders (which IMHO should be implemented exactly like a certain photo app from Google, hint, hint :).
I’m not missing the 0.2 days.

Inappropriate?I hope this feature will be on 0.7 !
-
Inappropriate?Im waiting for this feature too! :)
Just one question..what does "punted" mean?
Is that an english word?
I’m foreigner
-
Inappropriate?thanks for putting it in the next release :)
saw it on the road map as in-progress and was pretty excited
add all the new features and you guys have something really unique for a media player....
now all you need is cd ripping ;)
I’m excited

Inappropriate?has this happened yet?
