Why won't Songbird play songs that aren't saved on my desktop?
A friend sent me some songs, but Songbird will only play them if they are saved on the desktop. When I try to put them in my normal music-keeping folder, Songbird just won't play most of them. There are a few, however, that it will play, completely arbitrarily and inexplicably. Format doesn't seem to be the problem, as it will play some mp3s but not others. Help!

Inappropriate?What OS are you running?
What Version of Songbird?
Did you Scan for the media, or drag and drop them?
Try to rescan your folders and see, what that does.
There still are some problems with files, that contain special characters like Japanese, or German umlaute and signs. Some problems were encountered, with files that have a too high bitrate, too.
Have you tried to play those mp3's with another media player, to determine, if they are not broken? Try vlc for testing. That beast plays almost everything.
Tyler out! -
Inappropriate?I'm using XP and Songbird 0.6.1. No weird characters. The bitrates are about average, I think, and they are all the same bitrate, but some play and some don't. The mp3s are certainly not broken, as Songbird plays them fine when they are on the desktop.
When the same problem has happened in iTunes in the past, iTunes asks me if I'd like to locate the file, and then I locate it and all is well. Songbird doesn't seem to have a similar option. Even when I try to just use File --> Open a File and locate the files manually, they don't play. -
Inappropriate?Very strange. Are you sure you have read/write access to the folder, which those mp3's, that don't play are stored?
And please go ahead and try this way:
"File > Scan for Media", select your music folder and let songbird do the work instead of adding all files one by one. Then see, what happens. -
Inappropriate?I have read/write access and scanning for media doesn't make the dysfunctional songs work. Am I totally screwed forever?
I’m disconsolate.

Inappropriate?Of course not. Next thing we'll try is to start completely fresh ;-)
I hope your library isn't as big as 15k Songs though...
Go to
Start Menu -> Programs -> Songbird -> Profile Manager
Therein delete the shown profile and say yes, when he asks you to delete the files.
Then push exit and start songbird, like u usually do.
You start at point zero again and Songbird asks you, where your media is stored. Try that and see, if it will fly.
BUT BEWARE:
You will loose ALL preferences, installed addons, playlists, and so forth in the process...
Tyler out!

Inappropriate?Ooh, problem solved! I didn't want to lose all my playlists and stuff, so I just deleted the dysfunctional files. I put them in the folder I wanted and then dragged/dropped. It was only ten or so songs, so it wasn't too terribly time consuming.
Thank you so much for the help!
I’m ecstatic!
