why won't Songbird recognize my iPod, even with the add-on?
I've downlodaed the iPod Device Support add-on and it has installed succesfully but when I plug in my iPod shuffle (2nd generation) it doesn't show up on the sidebar. Why doesn't Songbird recognize that it is there?

I had the same problem and after trying formatting, deleting my iPod uninstalling Itunes etc.. I tried uninstalling the mtp device support addon and voila now it works fine. There must be a conflict between these two addons.
Hope this works for you too. I'm using Songbird 1.0 on XP SP3 with an iPod Gen 3.
cheers

so.. after reading a few of the last posts I did some testing.
It seems that Songbird wants to create its own iPod_Control folder on the device, and if its already there, it wont work. So the quickest solution would be to format it.
BUT, theres a few things to consider....
**First of all.. it wont always be named G: on your computer, if you have other devices installed such as SD card readers etc. it might take a different drive name such as F: or some other. So don't look specifically for G: but any drive letter that the IPod might have been named. You might end up formatting the wrong drive and lose important data!**
Second....you don't have to format it, the iPod_Control folder is set to hidden, so you might not see it unless you change your folder preferences to show hidden files.
Once you do this you will be able to see it and its contents.
If you don't want to lose the data, you can copy the iPod_Control folder to you hard drive. The music files will be in there, but they wont be named after the song. Itunes renames them and uses a database to call them up. You'll still be able to listen to them, you just wont know what they are, until you do. You can also re-name it to something else such as "Old Ipod" and leave it on your device. Songbird will then create Its own new iPod_Control folder and you can start using it with songbird. Keep in mind however, that leaving that data on there will use up space and you will only be able to use what's left to put songs on through songbird.
Sorry for the lengthy post.

Yeah you would think this would be the numero uno thing for new Songbird users to want to do... yet... *crickets* -
It seems the only consistent solution so far has been for people to format their ipods. -
Inappropriate?Alright so after poking around for the past 10 minutes I found this thread http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/t... that states that for the time being Songbird does not support the iPod Touch. *!@#$* guess I have to go back to iTunes for now... oh how I hate iTunes.
I’m sad

Inappropriate?From my website geekyschmidt.com
1. Connect iPod
2. Open terminal
3. cd /Volumes/$IPOD_NAME where IPOD_NAME is obviously the name of your iPod visible on the desktop
4. rm -rf /Volumes/$IPOD_NAME/iPod_Control
5. Restart Songbird -
SO instructions for Windows users would be? -
Rudy has give a great answer to this below. -
Inappropriate?Expanding on oneguynick's reply for Windows users:
1. Connect iPod
2a. Open command prompt (Start>Run>cmd.exe)
3a. Format G:\
2b. Go to Start>Computer to view all drives
3b. Right click on your iPod drive letter and select Format..
4. Once your iPod has been formatted, restart Songbird.
Songbird should now recognize your iPod. I did this on Windows Vista Ultimate with Songbird v1.0.0 and an iPod Shuffle.
I’m extatic to have found a solution
-
That or you can simply navigate to g:\ from your dos prompt and delete the iPod_Control folder with deltree iPod_Control -
Formatting my iPod in order to use songbird is not a solution... If that is truly the *only* way to get it to work, I wont be using songbird. Anyone else have a fix? -
Inappropriate?Probably would have tried that, Nick, but when I did navigate to the g:\ drive there was no iPod_Control folder or any folder to speak of =( So I just formatted it but I didn't really have any songs on there that I cared about saving. Hopefully this won't effect how the Shuffle functions?
If anyone does delete the iPod_Control folder with some success, I'd love to hear about it. And thanks Nick for all the info =) -

Excellent explanation! -
You're missing the point. For songbird to be seriously considered as an iPod replacement for the masses the user should have to do one thing.... plug in their iPod. I already have hidden files turned on, and can back up my iPod and all that, but why should I? Why would the average user? -
See above, the remove iPod_Control folder and all is well -
Good point. User interfacing and ease of use is something that needs to always be taken into consideration. I would send feedback to the "iPod Device Support" Add-on developers and mention to them that detecting iPods, regardless of their association, should be implemented and users should be prompted as to whether or not they'd like to associate their iPod with Songbird as well as prompting the user if they'd like to back up the files that are currently on their iPod.
I was irritated at first when my iPod didn't sync "automatically" at first but keep in mind that Songbird's still pretty new as are the Add-ons. -

Inappropriate?Check your Ipod USB driver is installed and working OK. There was a problem with mine, which I fixed by updating it.

Inappropriate?I used to have a problem getting my 2nd gen shuffle working in songbird. it wouldnt mount and i'd given up using it with songbird. i was using Shoutcast in songbird whilst transferring files to my ipod using Sharepod, when it suddenly popped into the sidebar. I imagine you need another program like itunes or Sharepod running at the sametime as songbird to mount the ipod as ive never had another problem.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?IF YOU HAVE A MAC, AND iTUNES I HAVE FOUND THE ANSWER! Because I didn't want to get rid of iTunes and I can't find my iPod in the sidebar on Songbird. My friend and I found a simple solution. What you need to do is open Songbird, iTunes, and Finder. When you have opened iTunes just make sure that you are in your "music" folder. When you have Finder open click on 'your name', under Places (might be below Desktop). Click "music" and then all of your songs in songbird should show up! Then just click and drag the music in "Finder" into your music on iTunes. = - )))

Inappropriate?I'm running Songbird 1.0.0 on Ubuntu 8.10
Using a second generation 2GB Ipod Shuffle
Erasing all the files on my Ipod, then rebooting the system did the trick :)
I’m relieved

Inappropriate?I had the same problem with a 3rd gen iPod Classic on Ubuntu 8.10.
Using the Firewire port instead of USB solved the problem for me. At the moment it's just a workaround for me, but at least it works.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?I am running songbird 1.2.0 on Ubuntu 9.10. I have an iPod shuffle 3rd gen. Can some one help me with this problem?
