Will iPhone support be coming anytime soon?
Up until recently, the iPhone and iPod touch were both locked up tight by apple with the release of major changes to the firmware, but since the coming of the hacked jailbreak firmware, the ability of programs to write to the apple database on these programs has started to appear. Mediamonkey was the first non-apple software that I am aware of that could do this. Now winamp has managed to get this support going with ml_iPod, which allows the data transfer of songs and movies to and from the iPhone.
The fact that ml_iPod is opensource I would have thought would mean that an idea of an ETA for iPhone support could start to be discussed.

Good call, klint. You're exactly right.
We're about to release a chunk of functionality that will make it easy to keep your Songbird library and your iTunes library in sync. This will allow you to keep Songbird as your primary media player and use iTunes to sync and upgrade your iPhones and iPod Touches.
Going this route was a tough call. When we encounter a closed platform like the iPhone, we have two options: we can crack it open and build our own support, or we can piggyback off what they've provided. Both approaches have their benefits. It'd be super-cool to have native support in Songbird, of course, but we'd also have to scramble like mad with every new iPhone OS upgrade, firmware upgrade, and device release to get everything working again. We'd probably have to ask you guys to jailbreak your iPhones, too. :(
Apple did at least leave a scripting interface available into iTunes. That's what we're using to keep your Songbird library in sync with your iTunes library.
Again, it was a tough decision. It's also not permanent -- we may change our minds at some point and implement native support for the iPhone, especially if Apple can move to a more open source model where their devices are concerned.

Inappropriate?Officially: this is the place to watch for updates on this topic and currently there's not one.
UNofficially (and totally between you me and the WWW...so, ya know, shhhh): I've overheard some banter and early stages of noodling and investigating by the developers and QA.
Right now that means nothing but...
I’m thinking it's a step in the right direction.

Inappropriate?Oh yeah, and for updates on the OFFICIAL progress you can track the comments on this work item. Just:
1. Go to the "people" box in the upper right hand corner of bug # 6389;
2. Add your email in the "add cc" box;
3. Scroll down and hit commit.
If you don't have a free bugzilla account, signing up is quick and easy and will allow you to share your feedback directly with the development team. -
Inappropriate?Ha so (nudge wink and a nudge nod nod), I will take this as good news. Really lovin Songbird (only found it 2 months ago) except for the lack of this one feature, good to know that it is on the books in a sense... didn't know about the bug page, good to know also.
I’m excited*

Inappropriate?Thanks munkifisht. I had never heard of the ml_ipod project but from their website it seems to be progressing nicely ( http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/ ) and no longer requires jailbreak. Fingers crossed for a songbird add-on soon

Inappropriate?Thanks, but I think that from reading the bug page, it would seem that people are giving up on ever getting this working. Apple seem to keep moving the goal posts. I am feeling like a tool for buying the iPhone now. Think I might bring it back and get a blackberry instead.
-
Inappropriate?AFAIU, the new (temporary) approach by Songbird of this problem will be different: starting with the coming 1.2 release, you will be able to have iTunes and Songbird coexisting and sharing the SAME song library.
Hence the best user experience with Songbird and the best connectivity to all iSomething via iTunes -whatever change in Apple's policy happens).
But maybe I got it all wrong, so if someone at Songbird could confirm or correct, thanks :)

Inappropriate?Is there any way of 'syncing' my music to a folder on my hard drive with the music database and the F00, F01, F02.... folders so then later I can SSH them to my (jailbroken) iPod Touch?

Inappropriate?someone please do native support for jaibroken iPhones in songbird. I run unix and would love to get rid of itunes bundle :)
