Will MSC work in Linux/Mac OS in version 1.4?
I was really excited about the 1.3 release because the new Mass Storage Class meant I would finally be able to use my portable mp3 player with Songbird. In fact, I was so excited that one day I decided to read the MSC wiki page, only to discover (at the very bottom of the page) that it will not initially support Mac OS nor Linux. What the hell?! How can a core feature like this be only supported on one platform, and isn't it insanely misleading to list it on the roadmap as "Mass Storage Class" if a good 10% of your users won't be able to use the feature. It ought to be listed as "Mass Storage Class on Windows."
Anyways, this is a problem! This will be the 2nd straight release of Songbird with no real new features for Linux users. We should not be treated as 2nd class citizens, especially when so many viable, open source alternatives already exist for us.
In short, my question is this, will Songbird 1.4 extend this feature to OS/X and Linux??

The MSC add-on currently works on OSX as well... but it took substantial developer effort to do so, and only because a few of us working on it were doing it as a side pet project. It won't be shipped officially with OSX support, but we'll probably provide development UNSUPPORTED XPIs for Mac folks to use.
It's non-trivial to port it to other platforms, and we don't currently have the resources to extend it to the Linux platform.. so can't make any firm commitment on when it'd be available for Linux, but if enough users file bugs requesting it, it's certainly something we might consider for the future.

Thank you for answering the question. And yes, I would be interested in seeing it implemented as well. It's kind of frustrating to be using the operating system that say > 90% of the open source developers use and then see an open source project like this one treat us like we don't matter. It just doesn't seem like you have the open source community in mind. I know you have limited resources, but it's very frustrating to hear that you will be writing new features for other platforms BEFORE you "extend" current features to this one. And of course it's "non-trivial" to port a feature to another platform. What does that even mean anyways? I would assume that it was also non-trivial to write the original implementation for Windows, but you did it anyways. Apparently, Linux users are only good enough for "trivial" work. :-( -
Ive been looking for the mentioned Mac XPIs. They seem to be nowhere to be found. Are they available anywhere? -
There in the trunk builds for 1.5: http://developer.songbirdnest.com/bui... -
Michael, I don't see an xpi for MSC in that folder. Does it go by another name? -
woops, sorry thats for the CD Rip add-on, i got confused, my apologies!
I'm not sure when they'll put the Mac MSC up, but i'll let you know when they do (or if stevel can answer before then) -
Inappropriate? While I might except it is non trivial to implement MSC support for linux, from scratch you should not be trying to re-invent the wheel, both Amarok and rhythmbox currently support MSC.

Inappropriate?Have no words, it's more than sad. Of course you can always develop for windows first. Nobody can tell you what to do. But my patient is over I was waiting long enough for proper Linux support. If you prefer windows for Linux it's you choice. Now I would like to let you now that I am stopping to use songbird on my computer.
Best wishes

Inappropriate?G'day,
The situation does suck, but at the end of the day, development resources are limited (and cost money), so I guess developers must prioritise the features that will satisfy the largest amount of users. There's no doubt that when the core base is developed that POTI will complete such features in Linux, but I guess they can't win every fight at the moment.
That being said, you could probably use Foldersync which works on Linux/OSX/Windows, and will probably work well enough for most MSC devices (if foldersync added automatic transcoding, that would certainly make it even better).. -
Inappropriate?Unless/until Foldersync can do folder to folder sync and not just playlist to folder it's not really suitable. At present I use synctoy in windows.
