Zune Support with songbird?
I use to use Songbird when I had a 4gb Ipod nano and it worked like a charm. Zunes were on sale for cheap so I upgraded to a 30gb Zune only to find out the program wasn't so good. I've been using a Zune for a while now and Microsoft's handling of the zune and its program is horrid.

We've hear a lot of requests for Zune support. After implementing MTP support in Songbird we thought that we might see the Zune players work in Songbird, but alas, Microsoft has opted to deviate from their own standard and created a modified MTP for the Zune called MTPZ. We've got a bug open for the Zune, please comment on the bug here.

Inappropriate?Really hope this comes soon, and hope even more that the extension will be mac or linux compatible.
Keep up the good work, just switched to songbird, love it!!!!!!
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?I just want to agree with Wiigee -
I'm hoping that Zune support will come to the Mac through Songbird. I know it's a very tall order, but I think you all can do it (since Microsoft doesn't seem to be). Songbird .7 is a very nice upgrade, btw. Keep up the great work
I’m wicked excited
-
Inappropriate?I'd like the mirror the request for zune support on mac and linux.
-
Inappropriate?i also would like to 2nd the request for zune supoort on the mac. :]
-
+1 -
Inappropriate?I would try songbird if I could use my Zune player.
-
Inappropriate?I'm furious with Microsoft. Their own software is garbage, and I'm pretty sure the mtpz standard is to force users rely on their own sad services. I just bought two Zunes for my sons and am already regretting it.
I’m pissed
-
agreed. I wish I never bought the zune simply because of the software. the player itself is fine though. Help us songbird :) -
Personally I think the Zune is the best MP3 player on the market and feel the quality of the hardware outweighs the quality of the software. That said, I would really like Songbird to support the Zune if possible. -
Inappropriate?I just bought my friend a Zune for his birthday/Christmas and we used my computer to load it up with songs. I too have to agree that the Zune software is an absolute nightmare especially since it duped me into deleting about 20 gigs of music off my hard drive. I might have actually been tempted to get a Zune for myself, but just the software alone left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never want to see one again. I would like to see Songbird support for them though since my friend will most likely continue to update his with my music library.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Need Zune support
-
Inappropriate?imma have to agree with everyone here, while i actually like the zune software, this program is just too awsome to not have zune syncing included
I’m meh
-
Inappropriate?Really want Zune support for Songbird. Cant stand the Zune software.
-
Inappropriate?Echo!
I have a Mac and I run the Zune software in Parallels for syncing, bu the software won't play nice with iTunes OR Songbird, and the Zune software, especially through Parallels, is not a viable solution for listening to music on my computer. Right now I'm going crazy just trying to keep my music library from falling apart because Zune keeps trying to grope a stranglehold on it. I got Songbird hoping it could be a mediator in the Apple vs Microsoft battle for my media, but things still aren't going so well. It would make my life so much easier to have Zune support in Songbird.
(As a side note, I love how Songbird and all of its functionality. After only a few days of using it, I've been very impressed and already prefer it to iTunes)
Keep up the great work, Songbird team! -
Inappropriate?Please/ I have just tried to sync my Zune classic and I get very erratic results. I also hate Zune software, and really like all that songbird has to offer.
One solution my be to sell my Zune and by something (anything) else.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I just got a Zune for my birthday and was sad to see that Songbird didn't support it. Over the last few months I've been trying to detox myself away from iTunes and was really loving Songbird. Hopefully it can support the Zune soon enough (as the other comments have already detailed-its software leaves more to be desired). For now I'll just have to deal with my iPod and its limitations.
-
Inappropriate?Indded more support for Zune the better. The Zune Software is fine but its always nice to have alternatives.
-
Inappropriate?Oh yes but make sure too it has WMA Pro support!
-
Inappropriate?I agree, I use to love the zune software, but compared to songbird its garbage.. pleeeasse zune support!!!!
I’m frustrated & sad
-
Inappropriate?Oh I would love mac support for zune through songbird! I just got a ipod classic 120GB this november and I'm thinking about upgrading my pc to a macbook pro. The problem I have is that the ipod classic is total f-ing garbage. The sound quality is horrible no matter what you do with the equalizer or which headphones you use, I've tried my new apple in-ear (dual drivers), my sony v700dj's, and a lot of other headphones! Just to make matters worse it's sluggishly slow and even though I in this short time have had it replaced for a BRAND NEW one two times, it's still not operating as I expected it would.
The bottom line is that I'm seriously considering to tell apple to go F themselves and ask for my money back, like come on guys, what else can I do when iTunes erases my library when it feels like it, the ipod lags, it sounds awful...etc.
I'm thinking about buying a Zune 120 to replace this awful piece of hardware, but since I live in europe I won't have much support for it software-wise and if I buy a mac I'd probable have none at all...it's still tempting though...
I’m hopeful
-
Even though this comment is waaaay of topic, I have to say your username Rocks dude! Spacecookies ftw
-
Inappropriate?Haha thanks dude xD
-
Inappropriate?Zune support for Songbird will be great, because maybe in some months Zune will be available in Europe (I hope it, don't want to buy Apple products) and i think some users will be happy of it.
I’m happy
-
Inappropriate?I would also like to add support for Zune compatibility. Is there nobody looking into supporting MTPZ?
I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
-
Inappropriate?could someone remove Zune support from the list of support MTP devices it's a bit misleading
I’m frustrated as it thought it was working
-
Inappropriate?I agree. I had hoped that 1.1 would have better support but it still only reads but does not sync.
It is misleading to include the Zune as supported
I’m really frustrated
-
did you get it to play back from the zune? -
I did not try -
Inappropriate? It is unfortunate yet unsurprising that Microsoft would make this difficult. I really hope Songbird can make it happen though, because the Zune software is absolutely terrible...
I’m jaded
-
Inappropriate? If / When Zune syncing is supported, will it be in all builds of songbird, or just the windows builds?
-
Inappropriate?I can't believe my shiny new Zune is going to force me to conform to the disgusting Zune software. -.- Someone really needs to help me out, man.
I’m royally pissed.
-
Inappropriate?jeez i hope zune hd uses the mtp..... im going to loose it if they use A NEW ONE!!!!!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? This is what you get when you buy hardware from the monopolistic backstabbers at Microsoft.
Seriously, some of you are even saying you "didn't want to buy from Apple", only to go buy from a much more evil vendor.
Realize this: Microsoft is not your friend.
I’m not telling you "I told you so".
-
And Apple is? You haven't kept up with the whole palm pre/itunes debacle, among other things, have you?
No one in this thread has a misconception about whether or not MS is their friend, they just PREFER the Zune. Simple as that. Otherwise, this idea wouldn't exist. Next time, keep it to yourself. -
Inappropriate?Yes, I'm aware that Apple are also dicks, but even still they are not even close to Microsoft.
You certainly can't compare a service being locked in to a hardware device, to a hardware device being locked in to a service.
While iPods are 'the only way' to sync with iTunes, you can choose other software platforms to do that, effectively not attaching you to Apple's software or any operating system.
The Zune, however, locks you into using Windows and that particular piece of software, which is in turn locked into using a Zune for a portable player.
If Apple==evil then Microsoft=evil^2
I’m facepalming.
-
When you have an OS as ubiquitous as Windows and an Apple fanbase that would never dream of buying anything but, what motivation is there to open it up? Truthfully, I stopped caring about songbird a while back because of the strides the zune software has made in innovation and general user-friendliness. MTPZ is crap, but again, the people in this thread love the hardware, so something must be getting done right.
We could probably go back and forth on this for a while, but I don't think this is the proper forum for it. It sounds more like blind corporate rage than anything else. Neither Apple nor MS suck merely because we've reasoned them to. -
Actually, you can't legally use other software to sync with iPod's, because creating such software apparently breaks DMCA laws now (which was probably Apple's intention). In fact, there is a lot of debate currently as to whether Apple is worse then Microsoft, because Microsoft's latest commercial doesn't mention Apple at all, whilst once again, Apple is dissing Microsoft again in theirs.
Anyway, its done in both cases probably so that useless users stop corrupting their data (seen it so many times). There is a good reason. I don't think its fair to say Microsoft sucks more then Apple honestly. To be honest, they are just doing what any business does. -
Inappropriate? You stopped caring about songbird, and I stopped turning a blind eye on products defective by design.
Just when did we stop giving merit where it is due, and instead favored whomever cornered us into the tightest spot?
If the general public hadn't been so gullible and forgiving, it'd never have come to this situation with incessant skirmishes of fruitless vendor lock-ins.
None of these problems are real technical difficulties.
They exist solely to torment you.
You should recognize something unacceptable when you see it, instead of pretending it's not there.
I'm personally unaffected by all this, but I can't stand seeing people being constantly treated like idiots. -
You know, it's funny how I feel the same way.
Now, please tell me how the Zune is DEFECTIVE by design? MS had no obligation to conform to community-accepted standards. What is it about that you don't like?
How can you say people shouldn't be treated like idiots and in the very same comment refer to the people as being gullible? People ARE idiots, and at the very same time, ignorant. That's not the same as gullible. I deal with it every day. You have to break it down to the level that they can understand, and that's why Apple is so successful.
I'm giving merit where it is due, believe me. While you hate MS so loudly, I've had a great time with their products - the Zune as well as the 360 and Windows 7. The way it all works together is STARTING to be like how Apple's stuff coexists.
It's worth pointing out (because you clearly do not know this) that USB-IF MTP v1.0 was drafted by a chartered work group that was made up of 17 companies, and is chaired by Microsoft. -
Inappropriate?"Now, please tell me how the Zune is DEFECTIVE by design? MS had no obligation to conform to community-accepted standards. What is it about that you don't like?"
Not doing what almost every other portable media player has done to date: loading media files as a mass storage class device.
That alone is not necessarily being defective by design.
That's just plain being defective.
It's defective by design not only because the previous is true, but because they also implemented something much more complex, with the sole purpose of breaking functionality.
It's taking that extra step to make sure it won't work that makes this so bad.
And no, they have no legal obligation to abide by any sane standard.
The only kind of obligation is called common courtesy, which they so obviously lack.
"It's worth pointing out (because you clearly do not know this) that USB-IF MTP v1.0 was drafted by a chartered work group that was made up of 17 companies, and is chaired by Microsoft."
Why are you telling me unrelated things that I already know?
Besides, MTP is another annoying "standard" being pushed mainly to help enforce DRM.
I’m deceptioned for this endorsement of anti-competitive practices.
-
Inappropriate?@atonak, I find it kind of odd actually that you are ignoring that the iPod's can't be legally connected to by other programs, and is limited in mostly the same way as the Zune (if not more, because you must break laws to connect them to other programs). I'm not saying either company is a "good example" in this case, and not sure what you mean by DRM (I thought the only DRM happening was DRM support in music, but the protocol isn't really protected).
You may not like DRM, however, you are not being forced to buy a player which allows its use.
Either way, I'd like to see more open devices supported first, but if time remains, I don't see any problem with adding Zune or iPod support personally -
Inappropriate?"Either way, I'd like to see more open devices supported first, but if time remains, I don't see any problem with adding Zune or iPod support personally."
First and foremost, exactly what you said there.
Delegate support for all these aggressors to after all the honest players have been dealt with.
About MTP, while it doesn't imply DRM, it does provide tools that help implement and enforce it, so I dislike it with a 'guilty by association' kind of reasoning. (this comes from what I've read so far; I don't know the specification personally)
Same as while technically OpenOfficeXML can be used for good purposes, it was really created to perpetuate an old format, under a different guise, while a better alternative already existed.
About the first issue, I'm not trying to ignore the legal implications of users syncing their iPods with other software, but one big difference is, for example, if those rules are ever made invalid (company bankruptcy, different legislation,...), iPod users will get to keep using what they have as they like, while Zune users get an expensive brick, at least until someone takes the effort to reverse engineer the user-useless "extended" protocol.
tl;dr: don't buy Zunes or iPods
btw, any idea on how would the iPod legal scenario look like if one's using Rockbox, for instance.
