And Linux?
Hi.
I'm not quite sure if this topic is already on the support database, since the search seems to not work.
I'm just wondering to know if there is any chance to sync my GMail contacts with Linux (Ubuntu)

Inappropriate? There's no good Linux solution yet as far as I know. There's two Linux geeks here in this Mac-world and we want it too. If only to use it for our own needs.
If you find anything --besides the old Thunderbird T-Sync plugin-- we'd like to know!
I’m undecided
-
Inappropriate?Well, no, I don't know anything, yet.
I just think that it's a shame that there are no actual ways to synchronize everything (Windows, Linux, Mac, Windows Mobile, IPhone, GMail, Live Contacts, etc...) with just one service. Even Plaxo can't solve this.
The day when a service will be actually "portable" (I know is not the right word, but I can't think anything better), they will be my ultimate choice and the best competitor against any other service.
Until then, I keep trying and abandoning incomplete services.
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Maybe one hopeful thing for you though. Tijn mentioned t-sync. This solution will be good for syncing with Soocial as soon as we support Syncml version 1.2 . We only support version 1.1 right now.
-
A small correction: T-Sync only does SyncML 1.0 afaik. I want to update it to support 1.1 as well. Too bad it's not a really good solution for Linux-users. this is only for Thunderbird and most KDE-users are not using it. -
I am sorry I got involved in this Linux minorities discussion with a random comment ;-P -
Inappropriate?Sorry man, I'm using kde on debian; I feel your pain. I have some hope that opensync will be able to sync with us. As far as I know, opensync can only act as a syncml-server, if only it could act as a client, we'd be in syncing-nirvana.
I’m sad we're always feeling we're using the platform of the minority
-
Inappropriate?are you using Gnome with Evolution? (since you're on Ubuntu, it's a probably a good guess.) Maybe you can try SyncEvolution.
Also, I just heard that the last opensync includes syncml-client functionality. However it only works over obex (bluetooth). I'm sure this must be quite easy to change. (Oh, if I only had the time...)
I’m happier than before
-
Inappropriate?I too would love the ability to sync my evolution contacts (running evolution 2.24.1 on ubuntu 8.10). I have been playing around with syncevolution with unfortunately no success.
I have been attempting a connection using the server details per the info provided for unsupported phones. I have also tried reducing maximum file size etc with no luck. I'm currently getting a libcurl error 52 - no response from server.
Could this be a problem related to server supporting syncml 1.1 and not 1.2? I haven't been able to find a setting to change the client sync mode using syncevolution.
At the moment my interim solution is to use your service to keep gmail contacts and my phone in sync, then sync the phone using multisync over bluetooth with evolution on computer 1, with a read only version of google contacts on evolution on computer 2 and thunderbird on computer 3. I could use bluetooth or the gmail/thunderbird sync to keep computers 2 and 3 in the loop but I feel it would increase likelihood of error.
I'm hoping there is an easy (or somewhat easy) workaround or something obvious I've missed.. but I'd be happy to assist any way I can in order to get this working. An ability to sync evolution contacts would make me a very happy girl indeed.
I’m slightly frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Ok, found a better workaround than the above mess. I've ditched evolution for thunderbird and lightning. (on ubuntu you need to make sure you install libstdc++5 library for lightning and provider for google to work - the library is in the repos)
Soocial syncs google contacts and my phone
A nifty extension called gcontactsync syncs thunderbird to google contacts
Another extension called provider for google syncs lightning to google calendar
Goosync syncs google calendar with my phone
All in sync. Life is good. If you need help with the above yell out and I'll do my best.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?I have written a simple script which clears all Evolution contacts and then copies all Soocial contacts into Evolution. It's nontrivial to do an actual synchronization because Soocial contacts don't come with UIDs, and even if they did Evolution changes the UID to its own UID anyway. Moreover, the APIs for the python bindings for the Soocial and Evolution APIs is undocumented, or I can't find the docs. So I'm mostly stuck. Is there an actual traditional forum for Soocial dev where I could ask questions and get help? I couldn't find one.
-
Inappropriate?> It's nontrivial to do an actual synchronization because Soocial contacts don't come with UIDs
Hah, tell me about it. And that's only one hard part of synchronization! :-)
Soocial contacts do have an id. You could retrieve the vcard for a certain contact (you know it's id) and add an X-SOOCIAL-ID field to that vcard before storing it. We are working without UID's by the way, we use mapping tables. UID's are not very convenient when almost every phone deletes them.

Ah, are you using thruflo's wrapper? ( http://getsatisfaction.com/soocial/to... ) Cool!
> Is there an actual traditional forum for Soocial dev where I could ask questions and get help?
Not really, but feel free to post any questions here or email me directly (tijn at the-well-know-syncing-company-dot-com). I will try to help you out.

Inappropriate?Reopening a dormant topic maybe, but I saw some people are going through quite some difficulty syncing with Soocial and linux (in this case Ubuntu).
I am offering a suggestion/question. Not being a sufficient hacking monster myself, is it possible to use Ubuntu One? Or use the py-soocial and Ubuntu One syncing. So instead of syncing directly to Evolution to your One account?
