Deduper is too strict

I'm not sure how it happened, but I now have duplicates of many of my contacts in GMail. All of the contacts that were duplicated had more than 2 words for names (e.g. John J. Smith, Bank of America, Mary Jo Pearson, Jane Robertson Monroe, etc...) When checked in Soocial, one of the contacts usually had a name in the middle name field, the other either omitted the middle string or added it to the surname field.

I ran the deduper, but it did not catch these duplicate contacts despite having the same email address and other info.
