Gmail account is stuck at "Being setup waiting for activation". It's been hours, and it won't sync any of my contacts.

Inappropriate? After setting up the Gmail connection it usually takes about 3 hours before the initial sync. Sometimes a bit longer if it is busy.
The reason is that a sync job is being put in a queue. There is no way to speed this up. Resetting the Gmail connection will just put you back in the queue.

Inappropriate? You guys should consider farming this out to a cluster. A tuple space type of solution would work really well for this and you could then offload the work to multiple machines at once. The tuple space would also seamlessly allow you to handle more volume by just adding more servers that would grab work from the space.
I'd also consider looking into a grid or cloud solution as well. The Google AppEngine might work well for you.
3 hours is an enormously long time and can probably be very easily reduced considerably with the correct back-end infrastructure. -
Inappropriate?Hey Brian, thanks for your input. We actually use a similar set up but then from Amazon.

We did sync more often before but had to stop doing batched syncing with Gmail as they changed something in their API. We had to start syncing contact by contact.
About 2 weeks ago Gmail released a new version of their API, and we are working hard on being able to use the newer version. We hope to be able to do batched syncing again and sync more often.
