Gmail connection broken after first sync
Gmail and Soocial have synced only once after I set up the connection. (I set it up again and it was the same.) No more syncing for days after that. It would be soooo great if it worked... Social is a really great product, anyway! Thanks for your help.

Hi Albert,
Your gmail connection has synced, the problem has been fixed.
Thanks for reporting it, let me know if you have any other issues!

ok, I've found the issue, it seems like with the latest update to Soocial your GMail account has gotten a little out of sync and we're trying to update a contact in GMail that no longer exists, resulting in an error.
You're not the only one with this problem but you are the only one reporting it, so thank you! I'm working on the fix and it should be done within a few hours.

Inappropriate?Hi Ralf,
Sorry about that! Please email your Soocial username to simon at soocial.com and I'll check to see what I can do.
I’m sure we can get it to sync
-
Inappropriate?I'm having difficulty in getting Soocial and Gmail synced. After the initial sync and some help from Tijn @ Soocial, I now have a de-duped set of contacts that has not synced with Gmail since.
Can anyone @ Soocial re-enable my sync?
I’m not having success using Soocial so far
-
Breggol, you currently don't have a GMail-connection... -
@Tijn: You're right. I have removed the connection. I have had no luck at all syncing with Soocial and have decided to not spend any time trying until Soocial has become more mature. -
Inappropriate?
Can anyone @ Soocial re-enable my sync?
There is nothing disabled here. I don't know why it doesn't seem to work. You could try to remove the gmail-connection and make a new connection again. That should trigger a slow sync (initial sync). Please, let me know if it worked.
Simon is working on new sync engines (think revolutionary; not evolutionary) those will be ready soon and are much easier to understand. Once those are deployed we'll be able to help you better.
I’m sorry, we're still in Beta
-
Inappropriate?Oh, Soocial is supposed to sync continuously after establishing a connection to my Gmail account? When I visit my Connections tab, Soocial says my last Sync was "scheduled at: Thursday 31 July at 11:28 AM" - that was the day I established sync to Gmail. As far as I have noticed, nothing changed after that...
I’m a little puzzled, maybe I've got a problem here
-
Inappropriate?hey spaceybear,
we're pushing some long awaited code optimization/fixes to Soocial.com which will improve, among other things, the the syncing with our engines, like GMail.
cheers,
Daniel
I’m happy with the updates!
-
Inappropriate?spacebear - the changes have gone online! you can read all about it on our blog ( http://blog.soocial.com ) or log in and check it out :)
I’m stoked about the improvements
-
Inappropriate?Hey Daniel, sounds great! Thanks!
Unfortunately, looks like the updates still haven't arrived here - on my connections tab, it just reads "scheduled for manual sync". No button to click here. Also, it still says "Last Sync at: Thursday 31 July at 11:28 AM".
I’m waiting until the update has finished
-
Inappropriate?hi Spacebear,
Yeah, it means its scheduled for a sync : ) With this latest update we still need to have everyone sync at least once 'slowly'. A slow sync means we exchange the full set of addresses between the two services and all later syncs will be 'fast', which exchange only the changes made since the last sync.
The slow sync, is very slow and since we need to do that for all our connections it takes a while to complete - sorry about that! Once done it should be a lot faster since from that point on it'll only sync changes.
cheers, Simon
I’m sure it'll sync soon
-
Inappropriate?Hey Simon,
thanks lots, sounds awesome! Fantastic support in here :)
I’m looking forward to being synced
-
Inappropriate?A couple days have passed, and my connections are still "scheduled for manual sync"... Slow sync is waaaaay slow :(
Apparently my connections have synced at least once in the meantime, because my "last sync" advanced to 30th August for Gmail and 1st September for Highrise. Changes in Soocial's contacts still aren't reflected to Gmail, though...
I’m not sure if everything's working as it should

Inappropriate?Hi Albert,
I've think I've found your Soocial account and accompanying GMail account, it seems like your GMail account is having some issues, I'm triggering it manually now to see what's up and I'll let you know how things go. -

Inappropriate?Hey Simon,
thanks a lot - sync seems to be working fine now!
But...
Unfortunately it looks like I've got a different problem here. The address data in Soocial and Gmail are just not consistent. Some contacts plain don't exist in Gmail, and I have even found one contact (myself) in Gmail where - in comparison to Soocial - one phone number is missing while the other is listed twice.
Just for testing, I have added a couple new contacts in Gmail - and they have synced to Soocial almost immediately.
I have described the problem here a couple of weeks ago already.
What's happening here?
I’m not sure if it's over
-
Inappropriate?Hi there,
sorry to get on your nerves, but can anybody help me out with this? At the moment, I'm not daring to use Soocial because the data in Gmail and Soocial are so different from each other... But I really want to ;) -
Inappropriate?Hi Albert,
Sorry to get back to you so late
It might be that you are running into a limitation that Google has imposed on the GMail address book. I think I've explained this before somewhere on GetSatisfaction but I can't find it anymore so I'll write it up again.
Google has imposed a limitation on the GMail address book that limits an email address to a single contact. What this means is that if you have two contacts in Soocial with the same email address only one will be synced to GMail, the second one is considered to be "in conflict" because it has an email address that is already assigned to another contact.
Could you have a look to see if the contacts that you are missing are actually contacts with an email address that is assigned to one or more other contacts? That would explain the difference in the contact count.
cheers, Simon -
Inappropriate?Hey Simon,
thanks lots for your patient reply! Really appreciate it :)
Unfortunately, the limitation you described does not seem to be the cause for the missing contacts. I have searched only for the e-mail address within Gmail, and the contact was not found at all. I have also searched for all people with the same first / last name to make sure the displayed name isn't just mixed up, but to no avail.
Also, as described already, there's another contact (myself) that has its mobile phone number showing up twice in Gmail, but instead missing the landline number that is correctly displayed in Soocial. In this case, for whatever reason Soocial seems to think that this contact has correctly synced although it hasn't.
So I'm pretty sure there must be another reason for the datasets being different from each other...
I’m hoping I can help
-
Inappropriate?Hi Albert,
Thanks for your info, it helps to get to the bottom of this problem. Could you send me an email at simon@soocial.com with the names of the contacts you found to be missing? With that information I can have a better look at those specific cases to see whats going on.
cheers, Simon
I’m grateful for testers
-
Inappropriate?You've got (loooooooooonnnnng) mail ;)
I’m silly because I'm tired and have to go to bed
-
Inappropriate?Hi guys,
it's been a few weeks already and I haven't heard from you ever since. Any updates on this issue? The contacts are still missing.
All the best,
Al -
Inappropriate?Hi Albert,
Yeah sorry about the radio silence from my end, I'm still working on your specific GMail problems. Just to give you a heads up on what we've been doing:
* We've implemented a new queueing system that'll speed up the gmail syncs and which'll give us a better view as to what's going on with specific connections like your own.
* We're working on a feature that'll allow dynamic translation of fields between different connections. This partly fixes the problem where labels such as "home" get converted into "other" and IM fields can get lost in a sync between OS X and GMail.
cheers, Simon -
Inappropriate?Hi there :)
Data in Soocial and GMail still isn't congruent over here.
As I believe that something maybe just went a little wrong when syncing for the first time: Isn't there a possibility to somehow do a really thorough second sync that just checks and compares all data on both sides and edits them accordingly? Initiating manual sync didn't help by all means.
I'd really like to use Soocial, but at the moment it's pretty useless to me because I'm simply not getting all of my data synchronized.
Thanks in advance and best wishes!
Al
