Incomplete error message back from sync
After manually setting up the sync details (I'm in an unsupported country), the sync appears to start (it says it's sending ->60, ->80 etc.), but then it bombs out with an error message, reproduced below:

In order to sync correctly you'll have to delete the pictures and try again. Just in case please backup your phone address book.

Sorry dude. We don't support contacts with pictures yet. As you see they make the sync break. We will support them in the future. Might take a while though. -
